The Yankees have won just three series thus far this year. One of them came in Minnesota and featured a strong outing from Carl Pavano. The other two were sweeps of the Indians at home and the Rangers on the road, the latter wrapping up in Texas just five days ago.
The penultimate game of that Texas series, game one of last Thursday's double header, saw Mike Wood start in place of a gimpy Kevin Millwood against Andy Pettitte. Wood and Pettitte matched each other through six innings, but two unearned runs put the Yankees on top in the end. Millwood has since landed on the disabled list (replaced by righty reliever Wes Littleton on the 25-man roster), thus tonight brings about a rematch of Wood and Pettitte on the Yankees' home turf. The odds would favor a less favorable return from Wood, which could help the Yankees remove the bad taste left in their mouths by last night's game. Then again, while the Yankees were sister-kissing the Mariners, the Rangers bounced back nicely from the Yankees' visit to Arlington by sweeping the Blue Jays by a combined score of 21-7.
Incidentally, the Yankees will follow this rematch with the Rangers by flying to Seattle to rematch with the Mariners. The schedule doesn't get this exciting again until late July when they face the Devil Rays, Royals and Orioles in three consecutive series. Wheee!
"Every decision you make might not make somebody else happy," he said. "I wish there were three of me. I really do."
Per Pete abe, Giambi batting 3rd, Abreu down to 7th. The 7-9 will be the slumping Abreu, the slumping Cano, and the bad Minky (who's sort of on a hot streak, some nice line drives last night).
Damon had some ugly hacks last night... Kruk on BBTN made the point that Damon usually releases his back hand as he swings, but last night was swingin' with both hands on the bat whole time - really ugly little flails.
I think the one thing stopping a winning bonanza is Abreu and Cano failing to get going... the pitching staff has seemed to stabilize somewhat. With this offense (if it were what it should be), we shouldn't be in so many situations for the bullpen to piss it away. Sure hope Mo will be alright - what was with all the 2-seamers last night? Think he was trying to get quick outs to save himself for a possible 2-inning appearance?
Not that I want the Yankees to do what makes sense or anything.
Richie Sexson is sucking it up, maybe we could get him now that his value is low, and reap the bounceback later. ;) I just think it would be cool to have a giant on the team - Phelps is a big guy, but Sexson's gotta just dwarf even him.
7 Agreed.
Thanks for showing up.
ENOUGH with yesterday's blown call! Let it go PLEASE.
Just when our pitching gets decent, the bats die.
Man... I glad Sosa didn't see the tape of Phelps' play at the plate.
I'm sorry. This is plain misery. I'm going to start listening to the away broadcast now.
Or not.
It seems like last year Bowa didn't get one guy thrown out. This year there have been a bunch.
NOT!!!
Nice...
Ooops, nevermind. Back to the old way with the HR call.
Too bad every single fantasy player i benched for today has a HR, sigh...
preetty dry last nite.
moving Giambino and Zilla up was nice
The Yankees have had him in their back pocket since he came to Boston though, so there's that.
you mean, future Yankee monument Mtgdghgaygdgauai.
But he is better than he showed last year, when his numbers were inflated by an equally ridiculous 17.4% HR/Fly rate, which was otherwise surrounded by better or at least unexceptional peripherals.
His big problem has been blisters, and Beckett-boosters will tell you this has saved his arm from overwork and bodes well for his health in the long run.
He should be entering his prime now and reaping these supposed benefits. It'll be interesting to see whether this theory pans out.
And an observation, it's typical this year for us to lose a close one then have a big win, or vice versa. Good for the run differential, bad for the W-L record.
Alex, Cliff & co. should pack it up.
But Henn is gonna finish okay, so it doesn't matter.
Yankees win. THAAAAAAAA Yankees WIN
Looks like things went well tonight. Now if only Toronto would come back . . .
My friend, an immigrant, asked me today how many Starbuckses I thought there were in downtown Boston.
Yo, who has starting pitching problems?
Night, Banterers. Let's beat 'em up again tomorrow. Rangers' bullpen is worn down already...
139 Figgins must be back
Chyll, all you need to know is Andy pitched 7 and finally got a win, A-God made an appearance, and Bobby A hit 7th...
Well done Chyll. It spoils the joke, but what is 155 about?
Wow, if this thread hits 200 posts by morning, props to whoever makes it happen.

Blame A-Rod.
I always liked that movie, but it seems that each time I see it it reveals more flaws. Eh.
Where's those damn crickets when you need'em!
Must.....get to.....200.....
Line: 7.1, 4 H, 1 Unearned Run, 1 BB, 5 K, 0 HR

I think the Pirates are a good team with good pitching, and in a weak NL have a fighting chance for once in a long time.
Hope you all are enlightened by morning. Fare thee well.
great win tonite, love pettitte going 7! glavine got #294, barry #745, griffey #568 and micah owings his 2nd victory, in extra innings relief.
i hope bobby stays lower in the order for this texas series. maybe get him going a bit better and get a-rod hot again...
I should amend my last comment to say I am not worried about Prince Phillip and his mechanics at all...
So with Glavine almost certain to get 300 this season, and Randy most likely next season, are is they the last for awhile? I don't think Moose gets there and I think hes the closest besides those two...thoughts?
yeah, randolph johnstone will get to 300 next season...
nope, i don't think anyone else gets there. probably ever...
i agree with you that moose is certainly closest and has the best shot, but it's not too realistic. let's say he gets to 350 this year. well, he better - he's only 10 away! he's been hitting the DL each season, pretty much, for a short stay. let's say he finishes his contract w/ us at about 265 wins. he'll be a 40-yr. old pitcher looking for a gig. i'm not sure the yanks will have him back and i'm not so sure he'd care to go elsewhere. i'm not sure a reunion tour w/ the Oreo's would be too fruitful. he's an east coast/near Pa. guy. sooo, that essentially leaves two teams - pirates & phils. as you alluded to before, the pirates just aren't that good, so he wouldn't rack up too many W's there. phillies have been inconsistent and play in a band box. if moose does hang on - somewhere - let's say, 1 or 2 extra seasons, i think he ends up somewhere in the 280's, like a handful of other pitchers.
pedro will reach 3,000 k's as soon as he returns (he's only 2 away) and smoltz should get there early next season. he'll reach 200 victories soon (only a few away). smoltz vs. maddux here in the atl. tomorrow nite. should be fun! too bad i've got to teach...
here's an interesting thought. pettitte has a player option for next season. if he remains healthy, i think he's back again in '08. rajah hasn't said he won't comeback yet again. i think if andy does, rocket might be back next season, too...
giambi is out for tomorrow. he's got bone spurs in his foot and it ouches him a bit. shouldn't be too bad though...
looks like we might fall short of 200. oh well. nite...
Up to 193 now huh? So we covered the 300 wins debate, but how about all those guys who are gonna hit 500 home runs with the next year? And somehow I keep managing to forget that Griffey is already over 500...
time for bed!
Seeing Carlos Gomez trying to save face was funny. Had to hurt his career, releasing an article about how a kid is overrated the day before the kid almost throws a no-hitter.
