Baseball Toaster was unplugged on February 4, 2009.
Yo, it is absolutely scorching out there today. It's Do the Right Thing hot; Dog Day Afternoon hot. The old man, Rocket Clemens goes against Jon Garland this afternoon as the Yanks look for the sweep. It's beautiful that the Bombers have already won the series, but that ain't enough, right? More, more, more.
Let's Go Yan-Kees.
Hey and just FYI, I received an e-mail this morning from a reader who was at last night's game with her daughter who just turned seven. It was the little girl's first game and apparently the YES cameras showed her when Alex Rodriguez came to bat in the third inning. However, the woman didn't tape the game and would just love to find someone who did. If anyone has the game on tape, drop Lorraine a line at: lfinello@verizon.net. Thanks, y'all.
Go get'em, Wilson!
Let me see if I can phrase this right...
how many of you don't have My9 on your cable package, but get the feed anyway for the yankee game?
our local cable co gives us the My9 feed on the days the games are on that channel, but we get a uncut feed; during commercial time, the camera feed stays on (usually a shot of the field, or a sneak peek at the archive footage they are about show). Even better, the MICS stay on. the stuff that's been coming out of those mouths has been hilarious.
my question is - does anyone else get this?
...
GO AROD
:(
next time, buddy.
I had a dental appt. today at 1 PM.
I don't get Yankee radio here and have no laptop.
I want to see a sweep, but I can't stand the idea of missing ARod's #500.
I called my Dentist. I lied. I cancelled.
Am I wrong?
Either that or three dingers.
Now Konerko leads off with a single.
Time for Rocket to work a little.
Which reminds me - I need to get the TiVo going.
Crushed to the wall. Melky almost nails Konerko at home, but Dye gets the RBI, and 2nd and 3rd nobody out.
(Is there anybody here who needs this play-by-play?)
For some strange reason, the Yankees seem to really struggle in these Thursday day games and then carry that over to Friday night. Maybe the Yankees should rething these matinees.
Another single, another rbi, nobody out, three in.
and man, clemens is up in the zone. i thought he would love this hot weather.
YOU HAVEN'T THROWN A STRIKE SINCE YOUR FIRST PITCH THIS INNING!
(Ignoring that anything that's hit is considered a strike).
Sorry, he was starting to worry me a little bit.
Double-play ball, but Robbie bobbles it a little, everyone safe.
I won't give any more updates unless someone asks.
35 No, but I don't like the idea of Roger being out of the zone, and batters not swinging at it. If he's getting by more on guile than speed, he needs to actually fool them.
That ball carried and Melky may have misjudged it. But he did not appear to run full speed, but rather try and 'time' the catch. Since it carried, it was over his head.
I think someone needs to work with him on that. It's not the first time that has happened.
Meanwhile, I'm being punished by the Dental Gods. Instant Karma. I hope I haven't jinxed this game.
Forgot the last part.
CRIPES. Karstens is gonna get some work today, I assume.
A-Rod is going to have to hit two grand slams today.
WTF IS GOING ON.
61 62 Myers again?!?!?!
Clemens is beyond awful and Torre should have hooked Clemens when he lost Thome on an 0-2 count. Dreadful. Just NO EXCUSE!!!
and yet another great job managing the pitching staff by joey joe joe
Kei Igawa
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you...
Roger has been bad, but Cano, and to some part Melky, put this game out of reach.
Does anyone else think Melky's ball was catchable?
BTW - if anyone doubts that Joe doesn't overuse the guys in his "circle of trust": Mike Myers is at 39 innings this year. He's on pace to exceed 50 IP easily. He hasn't done that in ten years - since he was on the Tigers in 1997.
Shoot, with an inning today he'll have met or exceeded his IP total of every other year of this century except 2004 - and that was just 42.7, which he might surpass by next week.
Is it possible in a House Money game to lose by so much that the House actually starts getting your money again?
dear god, it's over
Well done, Karstens.
5. Jeter doesn't have to play in this one.
4. Get to see Karstens while there's still plenty of light.
3. No pressure for A-Rod's 500th.
2. Can only lose once today.
1. If we win, WHAT A COMEBACK!
1) How many runs score if Cano gets 1 out?
2) How many runs score if Cano gets a DP?
3) How many runs score if Melky catches his ball and Cano makes his play?
Again, not to excuse Roger but....
95 Thanks, RIYank! I'm home, but working (in theory at least), and there's no TV in my office. So I really appreciate the updates.
Pedroia struck out, scoreless going into the 3rd.
104 Matsui is trying to get it going!
mmmm ... sweet underbelly!
Okay, I figure our chances go from microscopic to miniscule if we can get Garland out of the game. Work 'em, boys!
Cleveland with a 2-0 lead in the 6th.
Wow, that Cano error is looking big.
Looks like I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue... :)
Wow. It will suck if we come up two runs short today.
(sarcasm)
Join the party, WILSON!
Curtain call for Betemit!
Poor A-Rod!
wild.
That's why, while it isn't Torre's fault, he doesn't help things buy sitting by as Clemens implodes.
Destiny, baby.
It's Saturday. I am 15. Dad's at work for the day and Mom has an a little afternoon date with the girls.
I decide to rifle my parenst bedroom.
Paydirt. In Dad's shoe closet I find a paperback porn book.
As I head to my room to celebrate, I spy my parent clean, made, king size bed.
Saturday, home alone, too good to pass up.
A few minutes later, as I am about to enter Nirvana, the is a twist, a slam, and there's Mom standing in the bedroom door.
CAUGHT!
It seems Mom forgot something and drove all the way back to get it.
CAUGHT!
Now what does this have to do with cancelling my Dental Appt and the current state of this game?
OK Damon, what you got Mr. "The Manager didn't tell me I wasn't playing boo-hoo". Show him why you ought to play!
Jon, I just left a comment over at your place.
Here we go, let's rock the house!
abreu walks, loads bases...
arod the tying run...
....
...
..
.
I'll take a single from Alex!
Seriously, Alex, a single please.
0-2 to A-Rod...
A-ROD SINGLES!!!!!
Abreu holds up.
I'm happy.
Not making out was much more important that hitting one.
What a way to break out of a long 0-fer, Alex!
Matsui comes to bat as the go-ahead run, unbelievable. Just unbelievable.
We will win this game.
Is Joba here yet. We need a SP.
3-0 Boston if anyone's interested.
I think static would make Sterling and Waldman sound better ....
Double steal! Matsui Ks, so Jorgie up with men on 2nd and 3rd.
Posada's pop fly bounces for a ground rule double!!!!
Game tied!!!!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
UN... FUCKING.... BELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!
FUCKING.
SHIT.
that is all ...
What just happened was really impossible, right?
8 runs?
I am stunned.
Unbelievable inning. Yet believable:)
Can't wait for BBTN!
pound them, harry, pound them!
105 Anyone with a TV - has Ozzie's head exploded yet?
HA!
But really, who cares.
This is really where we need an ESPN guy in the dougout to get Ozzie's reaction.
Jeter just got Pipped.
268 269 Yeehaw!
What the F is the matter with this ump?
Gotta be an error.
No offense.
https://griddle.baseballtoaster.com/archives/750564.html
283 The second 'strike' to A-Rod in his last AB was about 3 inches outside. Home ump is James Hoye . . . his name doesn't ring a bell.
Thanks Ozzeroo!!!!!
302 Well done.
Carp! This is going to be one of "those games", isn't it?
Now if a Yank was pitching a game in which no one on the opposing team had reached base, and you used the short phrase to describe it - then you might be in trouble. =)
Now let's pound some leather.
No surprise.
Almost as bad as the between pitch noise at Shea that absolutely prohibits any contemplation of the game...
After I read your first sentence my response was "well clearly the sponsor wants it known that it provided something"
But you are right, the sponsor can still provide something...just give it to a fan....a raffle of some sorts.
Bases loaded, one out, Papi up.
Deep drive to right.
Caught at the edge of the warning track in deep RF.
Mirabelli tags up so Boston is up 4-3.
No... wait....
Mirabelli is THROWN OUT AT THE PLATE!
I don't see how... but it happened.
Next inning, though, for sure.
I didn't think that was possible.
Mirabelli should go in the record books for that.
No more runs!
Going back to 3rd for the second time is what killed him.
I deeply despise Podsednik. Deeply.
Henn could come in here and get the Yanks to the 7th at least . . .
See Joe why you don't pitch Vizcaino in a blowout? Villone would have been the much better option.
Memo to Yankees...no more weekday games next year. Other teams screw the Yankees, so they shouldn't feel bad about doing the same.
Can we bring back Ramiro Menodza?
Upper deck, just foul.
Nice job, Johnny -- how about a single and a walk now, boys?
I was enjoying the game, but now I really want the W.
I'll have to follow the rest in the car. See youse.
I realize that 8 is a lot...but it isn't a cap or anything.
I see some bruised egos in Boston between now and October...
Gagne acknowledged that he knows hes here to set up Papelbon in his presser... he'll get some saves though.
He sounded like a man who was avoiding a commitment one way or another.
Of course, that something may have simply been "we'll pick up all your incentives"
Or that something could have been "8 games up."
C'mon Alex, this is the time!
I think that's more like it. They're all but guaranteed to go to the playoffs - who wouldn't want to hop on that bus?
I have no scientific basis for this, I'm just sayin'.
413
right- the money and he said something to the effect of id rather win a world series than get 15 more saves. no question he'll be back in the closers role next year for the sox or elsewhere.
I think the Yankees can do it.
Do the Yankees think they can do it?
I'm just wondering what he was supposed to do that he hasn't done.
Seems like he is doing an ok job to me...his pitcher just sucked.
Sac fly to the second baseman? Really?
I agree with this move, BTW - Betemit is not a very good hitter vs LHP.
I'm sure that isn't really good, but I thought it was a mild accomplishment for one Robinson Cano.
Ha: Andy Pettitte with a ground ball
Me: Huh?
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg!
It's all good
In the 8th, Melky and Abreu will get on for a go-ahead number 500.
Don't give me this "it's hot" BS, Kay. We know what this is about.
My sarcastic meter is usually broken though.
boo birds for kyle.
CARP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where is Mattpat111 to properly give voice to my frustrations?!?!?!
I have come to hate "the Formula".
Why hasn't that SOB been exiled to the back of the pen yet?
thats gotta be the end of farnsworth.
make him the batboy if you have to.
I've changed my mind. Give me Wickman!!
"Yes, he's a 101 ERA+ in the NL (while Farns is at 96). And Wickman would cost about 10 million bucks."
But now, my answer is much simpler: No.
FREE EDWAR!!
Somebody give Kay a warm cup of STFU... please?
Unfrickin believable. I feel bad for everyone who stepped out when the times were good.
539 I had this typed out:
"528 The problem with that is that Wickman, who's an old, fat, veteran pitcher with closing experience has a BFOG+ that is at least as great at Proctor's - and would have immediately become Joe's "go-to" guy. I'm not sure I'd want that."
Nevermind.
But even if Joe leads the Yanks to a WS win, he's got to go at year's end. Let him come back to manage the ASG next year even - but when the World Series ends, so must his tenure as Yankee manager.
1) Bench clearing brawls.
2) Somebody loses their glasses
3) Games with 8+ run leads
4) Bench clearing brawls.
Edwar needs to come up.
Farnsworth should, at this point, be the last man in the 'pen, and dumped if possible.
Right?
"As great as that 2nd inning was, why don't I have that warm fuzzy feeling that we're winning this game?"
I still maintain that feeling.
You sound like a broken record.
Sheesh.
Anyone watching WGN? How wet is Hawk?
569 Think the Pirates would take him for a bag of balls? They are that stupid.
No way Torre could have brought Henn in in the 8th. Sigh.
I really hope that Farnsworth is gone, soon.
"As I wrote here and in the Sun, the Yankees are going to give Joe Torre options other than Kyle Farnsworth. If Torre is not willing to use those options and insists on riding Farnsworth then Torre should be let go. Now. Brian Cashman should put a direct question to him about it. If the answer isn't what he wants, he is obligated to make a change. With the wild card race tightening, there is every chance the Yankees can salvage the season. There is no excuse for sticking with a manager who would willfully throw that chance away on a miserable pitcher because he fears the unknown."

I link and quote these things because he says what I'm thinking much better than I can say it.
http://www.nysun.com/article/59701
Steve Goldman seems to be coming around to the fire Torre now idea.
Damon may have rediscovered his stroke, but he'd have to discover the Fountain of Youth to play center field and throw the way Cabrera does. Cabrera is more a part of the team's future than either Damon or Giambi, and that future has to be protected. And heaven help the Yankees if Doug Mientkiewicz ever comes off the disabled list. The team will snap back to its April form so fast that fans will feel like they should be preparing their income taxes.
Here's how my postgame interview with Kyle Farnsworth went:
Me: Kyle, got a minute to talk?
Kyle: About what?
Me: The game.
Kyle: We lost.
(Walks into bathroom)
Me: Um
Thus ended one great moment in journalism.
608 No worries. Now that we're going to 611 comments, the earlier stuff will disappear anyway.
I'm reallllllly looking forward to Joba, dudes (and dudettes).
Yo, Kyle, check out that big Indian sauntering up the driveway. What's that all about, cowboy?
Kyle lifts the brim of his hat. He stands up, his thumbs hitched in his belt, a toothpick sticking out of his mouth...
We're supposed to score more than one run against the White Sox' bullpen in seven innings. Right?
Today's Farns appearance was a good thing. It has buried him. Farns is done.
But what happened to Jorge?
1. Offense still scored a ton
2. Betemit started at SS and smacked the ball a couple of times, inching Cairo closer to the door.
3. Farnsworth was used properly (not in very high leverage situation), and he predictably stunk it up. Thus perhaps moving him closer to DFA.
Hey, it's better than nothing.
In other words, "cricket, cricket..." >;)
"Joe Torre on Krazy Kyle: "There's a good arm there; he knows how to pitch. We just need to get him more comfortable. I still believe Farnsworth is going to be a contributor to this."" (More good stuff from Pete Abe.)
I don't know what's worse - that Joe might believe that last sentence himself, or that he choose to lie even though everyone knows its a lie. I hope and pray its the second one. Because if the Yanks don't have time to make use of some of the kids, they sure as hell don't have time to set Farnsworth straight.
Speaking of catchers, anyone have the latest on Jesus Montero? I'm reading he's a better bet for first base if he can reach the bigs. Which is not bad thing if we're talking '09-ish...
(Uh, not you, Shaun, I mean Joe, of course.)
Yeah, I hope this is some weird way of softening the blow when Joe has Gator take Kyle out to a River Ave. back alley and shoot him.
Oh, good, I love posting at the end of a thread early in the morning, so a new thread will go up and nobody will ever read this.
Although... I don't know how big his is, but really big guys don't last as a catcher.
Man... I'm still hurtin' from yesterday's game. I hope Joe is preping our rotation for Cleveland. We really shouldn't be throwing our #4 or #5 at them. Those 3 games are VERY big.
the most promising catching prospect we have now is probably Francisco Cervelli, he's doing pretty well as a 21 year old in A+, he's hitting for decent average and walking a ton, not showing much pop though (though that's not exactly a crime for a 21 year old in the FSL)
You can tell a lot about what he says if you remember that he isn't going to tell the press that his players suck, but he also is often understated about their achievements. In other words, Torre intentionally leaves a certain amount of cloudindess to cover the club's internal feelings on a subject.
633 "I think Kyle has it in him to improve. He's a good pitcher and has done some very good things for us. Hopefully he gets back to doing that soon."
Why does he have to suggest that Kyle will be a contributor? That's what I don't get.
