What Makes the Hottentots so Hot? (Sweep Dreams)
2007-08-02 09:32
by Alex Belth

Yo, it is absolutely scorching out there today. It's Do the Right Thing hot; Dog Day Afternoon hot. The old man, Rocket Clemens goes against Jon Garland this afternoon as the Yanks look for the sweep. It's beautiful that the Bombers have already won the series, but that ain't enough, right? More, more, more.

Let's Go Yan-Kees.

Hey and just FYI, I received an e-mail this morning from a reader who was at last night's game with her daughter who just turned seven. It was the little girl's first game and apparently the YES cameras showed her when Alex Rodriguez came to bat in the third inning. However, the woman didn't tape the game and would just love to find someone who did. If anyone has the game on tape, drop Lorraine a line at: lfinello@verizon.net. Thanks, y'all.

I'll be a little disappointed if we don't score seven runs today. But I'll be satisfied with the W.

Go get'em, Wilson!

hey, this is as good time as any to ask -

Let me see if I can phrase this right...
how many of you don't have My9 on your cable package, but get the feed anyway for the yankee game?

our local cable co gives us the My9 feed on the days the games are on that channel, but we get a uncut feed; during commercial time, the camera feed stays on (usually a shot of the field, or a sneak peek at the archive footage they are about show). Even better, the MICS stay on. the stuff that's been coming out of those mouths has been hilarious.

my question is - does anyone else get this?

Betemit playing for Jeter is eerily good news. Unless he commits a bunch of gafs, that means Torre (for now) finally trusts someone besides Cairo to play back up SS. I am cautiously optimistic that Cairo's days are numbered.

40 I am just on Gameday so I very much appreciate them.

35 No, but I don't like the idea of Roger being out of the zone, and batters not swinging at it. If he's getting by more on guile than speed, he needs to actually fool them.

Anyone ever see Murcer play CF? He looked kinda funny at times, but did somethink very smart. On shots over his head or deep in the gap, he just ran like hell, as fast as he could to where the ball was going. He did not 'drift back' or try to time the catch, he just ran like hell. Often he got there early, camped, waited, and made the catch.

That ball carried and Melky may have misjudged it. But he did not appear to run full speed, but rather try and 'time' the catch. Since it carried, it was over his head.

I think someone needs to work with him on that. It's not the first time that has happened.

Meanwhile, I'm being punished by the Dental Gods. Instant Karma. I hope I haven't jinxed this game.

30 it's still house money...we have an aversion to sweeping series, remember? Why this team comes out flat time and time again in these situations is anybody's guess. there's been a fairly big turnover in players over the past 3 or 4 years so you can't say it's the same culprits...

45 Yanks have 4 sweeps this year - Cleveland (April 17-19), Texas (May 1-3), Pirates (June 6-8), and D'backs (June 10-12). I'm guessing the last game vs Pittsburgh was a day game, it was a Sunday. 65 69 There must be a SP Wheel of Guts too. Dear Lord.

BTW - if anyone doubts that Joe doesn't overuse the guys in his "circle of trust": Mike Myers is at 39 innings this year. He's on pace to exceed 50 IP easily. He hasn't done that in ten years - since he was on the Tigers in 1997.

Shoot, with an inning today he'll have met or exceeded his IP total of every other year of this century except 2004 - and that was just 42.7, which he might surpass by next week.

True Story:
It's Saturday. I am 15. Dad's at work for the day and Mom has an a little afternoon date with the girls.
I decide to rifle my parenst bedroom.
Paydirt. In Dad's shoe closet I find a paperback porn book.
As I head to my room to celebrate, I spy my parent clean, made, king size bed.
Saturday, home alone, too good to pass up.
A few minutes later, as I am about to enter Nirvana, the is a twist, a slam, and there's Mom standing in the bedroom door.
CAUGHT!
It seems Mom forgot something and drove all the way back to get it.
CAUGHT!

Now what does this have to do with cancelling my Dental Appt and the current state of this game?

402 Speaking of which, did anyone else hear the interview with Theo on Mike & Mike this morning? They flat out asked him how Gagne would be used when they already had Papelboner, and he completely dodged the question.

I see some bruised egos in Boston between now and October...

Gagne acknowledged that he knows hes here to set up Papelbon in his presser... he'll get some saves though.

Well Theo must have said something to satisfy Gagne enough to waive his no-trade.

Of course, that something may have simply been "we'll pick up all your incentives"

Or that something could have been "8 games up."

Let me just put it out there, because I hadda notion this situation might come up... A-Rod's 500th (provided he hasn't hit it already) will be the difference in the game.

Unfrickin believable. I feel bad for everyone who stepped out when the times were good.

539 I had this typed out:

"528 The problem with that is that Wickman, who's an old, fat, veteran pitcher with closing experience has a BFOG+ that is at least as great at Proctor's - and would have immediately become Joe's "go-to" guy. I'm not sure I'd want that."

Nevermind.

551 I think DFA'ing Farnsworth, and calling up the kids, would be more useful at this moment.

But even if Joe leads the Yanks to a WS win, he's got to go at year's end. Let him come back to manage the ASG next year even - but when the World Series ends, so must his tenure as Yankee manager.

Well, it's the 9th inning and since there's no save opportunity, it pretty much doesn't matter who pitches, according to Torre's bullpen rotation. Now...the 8th inning...that's a whole 'nother matter, indeedy. Gotta throw them 8th inning guys in that there inning. No feeling around with the sixes and sevens (well maybe once in a while if the panic sets in, we'll consider using the closer). Makes life more bearable when you've got one of these here rotations.

Apparently 8th inning pitchers (Homo Setupus) appeared first on the scene. Pretty much eons of pre-history went by before some accident of nature created the first 8th inning of a ballgame. (they used to only play 6 innings like in Little League) There was great celebration when the two concepts found each other. Fossil evidence shows that Joe Torre was the first manager to discover this principle of the natural order. I'm hoping to write up my research for Science.

From Steven Goldman in today's Pinstriped Blog:

"As I wrote here and in the Sun, the Yankees are going to give Joe Torre options other than Kyle Farnsworth. If Torre is not willing to use those options and insists on riding Farnsworth then Torre should be let go. Now. Brian Cashman should put a direct question to him about it. If the answer isn't what he wants, he is obligated to make a change. With the wild card race tightening, there is every chance the Yankees can salvage the season. There is no excuse for sticking with a manager who would willfully throw that chance away on a miserable pitcher because he fears the unknown."

Fire Torre and just cut Farnsworth. Anyone willing to claim him and pay him money to pitch is flushing it down the toilet.........and the SOB had the gall to complain that Torre wasn't giving him enough work. What a joke! If it's true that we could have gotten Wickman in a deal for Farnsworth than Cashman should be included in the firings. What has he been looking at all season?

600 Wickman sucks as well (league average, in the NL); just ask Braves fans about him. Not to mention, the Yanks would've had to pay all of Farns's contract (7M+) and all of Wickman's (I believe it's 3M). I'm not saying Farns should stay- there's no convincing argument for that whatsoever- just trying to say that, IMO, the Braves deal was far from a no-brainer. Pay 7M for Farns or 10M for Wickman?

I love this quote:

Damon may have rediscovered his stroke, but he'd have to discover the Fountain of Youth to play center field and throw the way Cabrera does. Cabrera is more a part of the team's future than either Damon or Giambi, and that future has to be protected. And heaven help the Yankees if Doug Mientkiewicz ever comes off the disabled list. The team will snap back to its April form so fast that fans will feel like they should be preparing their income taxes.

617 Today was kinda stinky, but there were a few positives (lemons-->lemonade, people):

1. Offense still scored a ton

2. Betemit started at SS and smacked the ball a couple of times, inching Cairo closer to the door.

3. Farnsworth was used properly (not in very high leverage situation), and he predictably stunk it up. Thus perhaps moving him closer to DFA.

Hey, it's better than nothing.

"Joe Torre on Krazy Kyle: "There's a good arm there; he knows how to pitch. We just need to get him more comfortable. I still believe Farnsworth is going to be a contributor to this."" (More good stuff from Pete Abe.)

I don't know what's worse - that Joe might believe that last sentence himself, or that he choose to lie even though everyone knows its a lie. I hope and pray its the second one. 626 Catchers have little regard for pitchers.

Speaking of catchers, anyone have the latest on Jesus Montero? I'm reading he's a better bet for first base if he can reach the bigs. Which is not bad thing if we're talking '09-ish...

627 Good hitting 1st basemen aren't exactly a dime-a-dozen but.... isn't the guy MUCH more valuable at Catcher if he can be at least league average on D?

Although... I don't know how big his is, but really big guys don't last as a catcher.

Man... I'm still hurtin' from yesterday's game. I hope Joe is preping our rotation for Cleveland. We really shouldn't be throwing our #4 or #5 at them. Those 3 games are VERY big.

Unless Jesus is beyond special, expecting him before 2010 is really way too optimistic (unless it means the Yankese sucking so much that they hold a massive firesale and bring everyone up, dowbt it though) we almost definately will need another catcher between him (if he even makes it) and Jorge... unless Jorge is Carlton Fisk. (there's a chance.. but lets not bet on it.)

the most promising catching prospect we have now is probably Francisco Cervelli, he's doing pretty well as a 21 year old in A+, he's hitting for decent average and walking a ton, not showing much pop though (though that's not exactly a crime for a 21 year old in the FSL)

What do you all expect Torre to say? "I really don't think he can do it. There is no way he can get it done."

You can tell a lot about what he says if you remember that he isn't going to tell the press that his players suck, but he also is often understated about their achievements. In other words, Torre intentionally leaves a certain amount of cloudindess to cover the club's internal feelings on a subject.

632 I don't think even Dave Littlefield is that stupid. And clearly no one is that desperate either - or he would have been traded by now.

633 "I think Kyle has it in him to improve. He's a good pitcher and has done some very good things for us. Hopefully he gets back to doing that soon."

Why does he have to suggest that Kyle will be a contributor? That's what I don't get.
