The Yankees have won 9 of their last 12 games and the last four games they've lost have been started by Scott Kazmir, John Lackey, Johan Santana, and Dan Haren. You really can't complain about that, though it is cause for concern heading into tonight's game against another big name pitcher, Toronto's Roy Halladay. Here's the good news: after a fantastic April (4-0, 2.28 ERA), Halladay's been something of a mess, posting a 6.35 ERA over his last eleven starts and a 6.85 ERA over his last four. The bad news is that it seems a significant part of that has been bad luck. Halladay has allowed 92 hits in his last 66 2/3 innings, which can be traced to his inflated .323 opponents average on balls in play. That cannot, however, be traced to the Toronto defense, which is fifth in the majors at turning balls in play into outs and puts a solid in field quartet behind the groundballing Halladay.
More bad news is that Andy Pettitte's recent history is actually worse than Halladay's. He's posted a 6.99 ERA over his last eight starts, a 9.00 mark in his last five, and a whopping 13.14 in his last three. More encouraging signs are that Pettitte fell just one out short of a quality start in Tampa last week, and handled the Blue Jays expertly in a hard-luck loss back in late May when he was undone by poor defense and run support and Aaron Hill's steal of home. Halladay last faced the Yankees in September of last year, leaving the game after 3 1/3 innings with a forearm strain.
Go computers! ;)
frankly, i'd be surprised if that's all beane would want for johnson
and what the hell would the wheel of guts look like if joe didn't have EDSP to run out there every game?
4 If no team wants to trade for him, I don't see why the Yanks shouldn't just release Myers. He's not making much money, he's ultimately redundant - Igawa or Villone could easily be used to deal with LHB, shoot even Edwar - and he hasn't done his job. Its dicey with relievers, especially LOOGYs, because everything is a small sample, but c'est la vie.
I think that's carny for "we're not trying"
And on top of that, he's not very good.
Hughes is coming to the big club the next start after reaching 95 pitches in the minors.
Also... Man, I was really hoping Girardi would rip Loria there.
I missed 4 innings (preping dinners) and exactly one Yankee hit. Is Doc that good tonight? Is this what our team does? Heal opposing pitchers?
I like him personally, but right now he's ticking me off much more than Nieves or Miggy ever did. Only Cano frustrates me more, but that's more of a wasted potential thing.
I do not like Kyle
I do not like him one bit
I do not like him wearing glasses
I do not like on the mound
I do not like him at home
I do not like him away
'cept I suck at rhyming.
We need the sad trombone wah wah wah waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah to play every time Worthless comes in
How the hell hard is it to throw the fucking ball to first?
Makes me think that Shelley is the position player, and Durazo will take his spot.
Remember that?
Well, Cashman should have shipped his stupid ass out of town right after that nonsense.
Yeah.
The question of the year: Is it worth missing the playoffs to guarantee a new manager next season?
He's broken.
what the hell is wrong with this umpire? that pitch was down and in.
No, you have to make at least $3,000,000 or have been in the league 5 years, or be Mo, to pitch the 8th for Joe Torre.
Another year the roles were reversed - Nelson was lights out, but Joe would go to Stanton (who sucked) first.
129 Probably, but its time to stop showcasing Farnsworth. With every run allowed, and every poor performance, he just loses more value.
the question about whether it's worth it to not make the playoffs to get rid of torre is off. the question is whether we could make the playoffs even without him. who is going to be a good manager for us? girardi is hard to judge because he seems too nice to argue a lot, but he also says a lot of questionable things. what if he's just as bad? did anyone actually watch him manage in florida? didn't he make some questionable calls in spring training or something?
That is exactly what I was told the last time Farnsworth imploded. But Im like Giambi, I wont name names:)
Should the third base coach end up standing at home plate?
Ok, Captain is up in the clutchiest clutch situation of all.
Come on, Cap!
For the Yankees, it is.
Just remember we're playing a 10th because of Andy Phillips and Melky Cabrera. No one else.
And he may have hurt himself.
OK, tied going into extra innings. Does Bruney come back out, or are we going to see Myers or Villone, because the first two guys up are lefties?
Or was Cairo really hirt on that play? I guess then you move Posada to 1B and play Nieves at C.
I spall and tipe realy goood.
MO. Are you kidding me? Joe Torre bring in MO here? Wow! Have you met Mr. Torre?
248 I was going to be sarcastic, say something about the formula and saves, but I'd rather Mo be held back for the meat of the lineup.
It was either through him or around him. Not a lot of time to decide.
Aha, Cairo is out there. Mute point.
On a side note, Cairo could have been called out for interference because Bowa ran all the way down the line. If the umps determined that Bowa distracted the defense, Cairo would have been an automatic out.
Who's throw day is it? I'd go to them, after Edwar.
: )
Yep, I'm having an unusually illiterate day.
But yeah, moot point.
Müt point!
By my math, that makes 4 consecutive ineffective innings for Farny. How many does it take exactly? One for Edwar, ten for Farny?
I would have used Bruney for a second inning, but I don't have the Wheel of Guts.
And Jim/Schteeve/Vandelay: Mo is not available. Get over it.
"If the doctor lets you have an ice cream a day. That doesn't mean you can save up 30 days and have them all on the last day of the month. That's not really healthy,."
Why do we mock when Proctor gets used every day and worry about him burning out, but it's okay to use Mo four straight days and five out of six?
Fuckwad.
His new nickname should be A+Rod.
Haven't we already learned that lesson? So he can pitch in a blowout on Thursday?
Any, Cano makes this a...
MUTE POINT!!!
325 No, so he can pitch period. You are a piece of work.
HA!

[Why the big pause?]
Duuuuuuhhhh.....Yaaannnnkkeeeesss Wiiiinn!!!"
Even on a good win, that fuckwad screws it up.
Boy, I thought 2005 was nerve-wracking. That was just one month of playoff-like games. Am I going to survive 2-1/2 months of playoffs?
If only my friend, if only. He's still the 8th inning guy, notwithstanding his channeling of the Tigers middle relief's pickoff move from the WS.
Farns & Meyers need to go - they're just taking up roster space. They could be useful as mop up-ers, but that'll never happen, so ship them both to Philly for their BUC & a nobody from their farm. Good riddance & hello Chris Britton.
Good point. I was a little jumpy after they won it.
; )
Yes, the Dodgers want him or Proctor. Texas could use him, and Cincinatti needs to dump Dunn. But this team doesn't "deserve" reinforcements.
Melky went 3 for 4, singled, stole third and scored the tying run in the ninth, and his Win Probability Added? -0.35, second worst on the team tonight.
The only problem is that even at that pace, they need help. If the Sox and Indians really do come back to earth or fall on some misfortune, then yes, I'll start scoreboard watching more seriously.
Q: Can you take Farns out of the 8th inning?
Torre: What does it matter what inning he comes in?
They got the line right, and by the graph, Melky is properly credited with a boost for his single in the ninth, but on balance WPA says he hurt the Yanks tonight.
Manny is still swooning, and the over-their-heads guys are coming down. Wakefield is almost at a 5 era, schilling is out, and Beckett & DiceK are looking at like high 3 ERAs (and i still think DiceK is their best pitcher, inconsistent as he's been...)
I still think catching them is highly improbable, but it's not impossible (think injury to Oritz, and remember his knee is barking, and maybe more time on the DL for Beckett or DiceK, who's agent is squawking about his workload) that the yanks overtake the sox. what a hoot that would be. Of course, shaking out the Yanks roster would be a prerequisite to making a run...
I assume he means besides review matchups, plan strategy and try to come up with a better reason for using Farnsworth than simply stating he is my 8th inning man.
He was put into a close game in the eighth inning - again.
pavano - verb - To hold onto a player long past their expiration date because their future once held promise in the eyes of the general manager.
"Cashman has been pavanoed on Farnsworth for so long that there's no chance he'll ever trade him."
Look around the league--there are tons of mediocre and worse relievers, and a surprising number of them continue to find employment as they rotate from team to team. If you're LH, you can find a job. If you throw hard, you can find a job.
The question is not whether Cashman can find a GM who would take him. Rather, the questions are A] What would they get in return? B] How much salary do they have to eat? C} Will Cashman actually trade him if a deal is there?
Sounds illogical, but that's what happens. Everyone knows what Farns is, but again, there is no shortage of think tanks on teams that believe they can turn straw to gold. Apparently this organization was one of them, and don't fret, there are more in line.
No one is going to read this, but I agree with Bklyn about Farnsworth.
397 As for a GM dumb enough to let a small sample size overrule a large body of work, the line starts with Jim Hendry of the Cubs, who's followed at least by Wayne Krivsky, Bill Bavasi, and Dave Littlefield. Terry Ryan of the Twins, for all his savvy, also seems to have "veteran pitcher fetish" - how else do you explain Ortiz and Ponson?
100 MPH and that shiny "C" for closer blind a lot of people. Remember Billy Koch?
