The Yanks played well enough to lose on the 4th of July. When Johan Santana is the opposing pitcher, you know it is going to be a tough day, regardless. But the Yanks let the game get away from them late and fell to the Twins, 6-2. Still, the Bombers have a chance to win the series with a victory this afternoon and I've got a hunch that Kei Igawa will pitch well. Alex Rodriguez, who is 0-for-his-last-19, is not in the starting line-up.

Let's Go Yan-Kees!

b) I save my Farnsworth material for the late innings.

I remember it being hinted at that the Igawa signing was a George move, does anyone know if this is true? I dunno, I'm not saying he would have saved the season, but can you imagine the difference if they had signed Lilly instead? 35 Yes, and Igawa has a 2:1 strike:ball ratio, so he's doing well. Also doing very well by Three True Outcomes criteria. He's obviously a good pitcher, just unlucky.

30 Don't presume that Lilly would have put up the same numbers in NY, against AL lineups, that he has in Chicago, against NL lineups.

25 It certainly wound up that way.

We scrimped on first, we scrimped on the bench, we picked the worst professional baseball player I've ever witnessed to back up Posada.

Which is fine, if the plan is to save money and look to next year. But if Brian Cashman had 45 million dollars that was burning a hole in his pocket, perhaps he could have spent it on something that had the potential to be useful

43 i would say there were 2 errors on the play. it was a little bloop over igawa's head, he tried to catch it and kind of waved at it. then he picked it up and threw it into the dirt and past phillips.

You know, what with this season basically lost and all, I have no problem with trying to get Igawa into an effective pitcher, which I still feel is possible. When he keeps the ball down, he gets outs, but then he makes those awful mistakes. So thos emistakes just need to be worked down further. Better than watchign Chase Wright get Henned...

52 Be careful what you wish for, or Nieves will end up being Kei's personal catcher too.

51 Gotta get Jorge a little rest sometimes, right?

C'mon, Torre does everything formulalicly (is that a word)?

7th inning = bring in Proctor. 8th inning = bring in Farnsworth. Save situation in 9th = Mo. Moose starts = Nieves catches. Tough lefty starting pitcher = bench every slumping lefty hitter you can. Starter has 80 pitches and is a rookie = take him out. Tie game on the road in the 9th or later = don't use Mariano. 'Kid' just called up from AAA and isn't projected to be a star = let him waste on the bench for days, put him in at the worst time, watch him fail, bury him, demote him when needed. Last two guys in bullpen = don't use, unless desperate.

And so on.

Obviously once Hughes comes back, igawa goes to the BP, and waiting for Hughes is pretty much what carries me...
But, I don't want to see kids up who aren't ready, as that can seriously damage them, and I think Igawa can be a league average starter/better than most of the guys in our BP right now reliever...

You can bitch and grumble and pretend you know better than Cashman, or you can just accept it and watch him try and improve, your choice...

91 Bernie and Posada have nearly identical OPS+. Now, Bernie has many more ABs, but Posada is a catcher, so his historical comps are not as strong. seriously, i don't care about the money, it ain't mine anyway, but igawa needs to go away, fast and far, bring de salvo back, bring up runelvys, give joba a taste ... anything would be better than wasting time on igawa at this point

i can't see how he was ever as successfull as he was in japan with his inconsistency and lack of command (which means we're probably dealing with additional non-baseball culture shock, level of comfort and mental toughness issues here as well)

At least Twins fans have to feel worse than us. Slowey is one of the Twins' best pitching prospects. He's supposed to be the next Radke, or something like that.

2007-07-05 11:41:27
194.   tommyl
186 I think its just that Japanese hitters hit for far less power and probably the bottom of the order there is a lot softer.

Remember Matsui was the home run king over there, here he's a guy with decent HR numbers and gap power. A-Rod or Manny would probably hit 100 or so a year there.

180Considering his apparently massive mechanics problems (which kicks in every time he has men on base), Igawa probably needs a full season in AAA getting that corrected. Even then, he's a marginal talent. But, they may have to do that. I don't see anyone taking him off our hands at this point.

192 but you don't lead the league in K's without having some plus pitches and, quite frankly, i think his stuff is good enough to be a serviceable ML starter, when it's working and he has command

but as someone said earlier, he never seems to have all of his pitches working at any time and he never has consistent command of them as well ... and he doesn't have good enough stuff to get away with mistakes

maybe it's the culture shock, maybe it's the different seams on the ball, who knows, but we can't afford to keep running him out there for OJT ...

Cairo struck out with men on base!?!? and he didn't even make the pitcher (who's coming out after this inning anyway, but shhh) work by fouling off pitches!?!? Trade Cairo! Get a bag of Balls for him! Where's Steve Phillips on this? Or weeping for brunhilde for that matter...

243 For once I agree with you. Cairo's 1 for 3 with an RBI. Don't blame him, he signed on to be a UIF, its not his fault he's playing nearly all the time.

Its tought to really hate a backup IF. I mean talk about low expectations, you don't even hit well enough to start at 2B.

Um, if you actually think Viz is moving up on the depth charts, why burn him against the bottom of the order. Though maybe Joe is thinking 2 innings and he faces the top next inning?

248 Definitely two innings, unless he throws a whole lot of pitches. This is V's reward for recent performance, you know.

Another Torre formula (for 2007) - tie game, middle innings = bring in Vizcaino. And: pitcher in trouble, early in game, less than 2 outs and 1st base open = bring in Vizcaino to issue IBB.

247 I am not blaming Cairo, but O'Neill just got through a long speech on how Cairo was exactly the kind of guy you want up in that situation because he always puts the ball in play. I guess that raised my low expectations.

I rarely if ever blame bad players for failing...I prefer to save my scorn for the men who acquire and play them.

From Igawa's wikipedia page

Igawa wears sunglasses when he pitches in daygames because he is not good at day games. His record at day games in Japan is 4-5, 7.09 ERA. However, he has been usually good at rain games. He said "Rain is the weather for me."

Saw this interesting stat: 13 of Mariano Rivera's 30 appearances have come in games during which the Yankees either led or trailed by 4 or more runs. When you consider all of the close games the Yankees have lost with Mo sitting on the bench, that pattern of use is shocking (not to mention a sign of incompetence).

296 and 300 We did most of the damage against Slowey who I frankly think sucks. Melky and Cano are going to be good for maybe 25 HRs a season combined. I'm glad we got 5 runs today, but without A-Rod our entire lineup has very occasional power, and that's not good.

293 But very few managers do act that way. Not saying your position isn't logical; it is. But over the last 15 years, the only manager I found consistently using his closer late in tie games on the road was Larry Dierker (with Billy Wagner). Mike Hargrove and Bobby Cox seldom do it, wheras everyone's heir to the throne- Joe Giarardi, never did it last year despite seven opportunities to do so.

Torre is illogical with use of Rivera in tie games. But he is not uniquely illogical.

318 Not to turn this into a Torre rant thread, but my reasons for possibly getting rid of Torre have less to do with his BP management than with his treatment of kids who are not super prospects. I just think the team is in transition and could benefit from someone who will give the kids a shot (and also help them along a bit). Girardi has shown he can do this with the Marlins last year. I also think many of the "core" veterans (Mo, Jeter, Posada) have a tremendous amount of respect for him and would be happy to play under him.

313 The difference though is Joe has repeatedly brought him in with the score outside the saves rule parameter of 3 runs. Also, the Yankees are now desperate for wins. If Torre can't adjust to those circumstances, that's precisely why he should be let go.

As for Girardi, I wouldn't exactly compare how one handles Joe Borowski to how you'd expect Mariano to be used. Heck, if Borowski was my close, I would never want him in the game.

I mean playing people like Cairo when Shelly Duncan is in the minors. Or pitching Myers when Britton is around.

BTW, notice that the Twinkies only have 1 lefty in their pen and he's not really a 1 batter guy? Yet they have a good BP? How can that be possible?

367 The story about him waiting outside hotels for hockey players autographs after he was a major league pitcher is hilarious. His teammates had to tell him it was embarassing.

368 I'm not against that at this point.

The thing that bothers me most about Duncan, is I think his mediocre minor league career indicates that this is not the guy we'd be getting.

DP smash up the middle that hit the edge of the grass and scooted underneath Derek's glove. It was hit hard. Bad break.

It wasn't a boot, really. It went off his glove. It looked like he lost it when Mo leaped for it. Either way, should've been a DP.

Maybe they didn't count in an error, or maybe Gameday screwed up. He seemed confused by the topspin of the ball, and it got past him. Melky had to get it.

Mauer out at 1B. Runner scores. 7-6 Yankees. Runner on 2B, 2 outs.

381 that's very likely true, it's certainly very possible, but again, the reality is that we don't know, we won't know, unless the player in question gets an actual, extended chance with consistent playing time

jack cust was everybody's favorite AAAA slugger til beane gave him a chance (out of desperation and the fact he had nothing better in front of him) ... now? he might be a useful DH ... but whatever he becomes (or doesn't) in the future, he's given the A's a spark and 2 months of badly needed production ... and at the end of the year beane will have a lot more information about what he has in cust than he would if cust had spent another year down in AAA ...

in another news ... MOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

406 I've heard the "just give him a couple months!" argument for other players. Not necessarily from you.

421 Agreed, if Damon were healthy and hitting like he did last year I'd say its not worth it to bring up Duncan. I sort of like how Steve Goldman puts things. If you have two options, A and B. B is unknown, but you know A sucks. What's to lose by trying B?

429.   RIYank
428 I don't know how you kept up that conversation, my jaw was clenched for about ten minutes.
But here's something else in favor of your plan: with a couple of DL weeks, Damon might well stop sucking. Maybe you mentioned that.
2007-07-05 14:19:37
430.   tommyl
429 I did. In fact that's why I said it was a win-win in all likliehood. Even if Duncan sucks for 2 weeks, you know what you have in him and you likely get back a much healthier Damon.

425 A friend of mine, whom is a huge Angels fan for some reason, usually gives me grief around about the time the Yanks and Halos play. However, he has been strangely silent this time, probably because his team has dropped six of eight. Pounding the Angels would be quite a treat.

430 If he sucked for two weeks, I'd say they probably have a guy who played over his head for half a AAA season. Look at his minor league career, year by year, and ask: which of these things is not like the other?

His stats this year are almost identical with Kevin Maas's first year in the bigs.

Sure, give the kid a try (not such a kid, really). I just wouldn't expect too much.

433 hilarious!

it's really disconcerting that we can't find a way to consistently beat the halos, esp. at the stadium. 2 of 3, minimum, would be really nice leading up to the break...

even if a-rod is okay to play this weekend, i hope he sits out the ASG. here's a thought: have abreu take part in the HR derby. maybe it'll be like the ol' hit in the head trick from old TV and he'll get his homerun swing back! : )

i'm very much looking forward to being back home in NY next week. it's too bad it's during the break. i haven't caught a game at the stadium w/ my brother in ages. at least there's carvel...

ooh, not sure if it was mentioned - (don't think it was, sorry if i'm repeating...) - mo tied john franco for 3rd in saves with 424 today. a nice addendum...

chipper jones just hit his 371st homerun. he has a great swing. tied dale murphy for most in "atlanta" history. andruw is 15 away, aaron is 4th on the list, since he was in milwaukee for a good bit...

438 I love watching Chipper Jones. When healthy, he's one of the best hitters in the game.

(Yeah, I'm still up...)

2007-07-05 22:20:07
440.   thelarmis
hey, yankz - i almost called out for you specifically!

when i first moved to the Atl, i was not a big fan of chipper. he was young, crass and a total jock. he was like the anti-jeter. he really has turned the corner and become a class player/person. he's a special switch-hitting player that has a chance to possibly reach the lofty #'s mantle & murray achieved.

of course, as i'm typing this, larry jones, just cracked his 2nd homer of the game and is now the atlanta franchise leader at 372, all of those longballs, of course, coming with bobby cox (former yankee 3rd baseman!) at the helm...

btw, the back-to-back jacks tonight, came from each side of the plate. i love that. i loved it even more when bernie and jorgie both did that in the same game. that's the kinda factoids for mr. timmermann at the griddle!

2007-07-05 22:23:55
441.   thelarmis
whoa, yankz -- the last time chipper homered from both sides of the plate was: 7 years ago tonight!!!

strange things are afoot at the Circle K...

2007-07-05 22:26:34
442.   yankz
440 That's exactly why I like him. He was kind of a punk, but he's gotten to be pretty cool. I heard a good case for him being the second best SH ever.

You know what's sweet? Chipper and Smoltz are the longest current teammates. Second? Jeter, Posada, and Mo.

Also, 441 = 7^2 x 3^2...which I'm sure is significant in some way!

2007-07-05 22:34:33
443.   thelarmis
whoa, now that bagwell retired, i hadn't thought about the longest standing teammates. i love that we have 3 guys! i'm sure mo and jopo will be back next year, and beyond (crossing all digits. and eyes).

smoltz is gonna miss his next start and the ASG, but i still think he'll need next year to reach 3,000 k's. 200 wins, 150 saves, 3,000 strikeouts, a cy young, all the post season victories = i'm gueesing means HoF for the athletic competitor.

yeah, when chipper came up he was a jerk on and off the field. the knocking up the hooters girl whilst married was BIG news here in atlanta for awhile. his move to LF was selfless and he made great plays at 3B when he returned to the infield. i didn't care for smoltz calling chipper out the other week thru the media. perhaps his much publicized divorce got to him...

2nd best SH ever? wow, he needs to stay healthy and put up another few solid years. well, that's certainly a possibility. but i guess Mantle and Murray have 1 & 2 locked down. i wonder where beltran and berkman will end up. i've always been a fan of the switch hitter.

ooh, i'm missing bernabe now...

443 I definitely think Smoltz gets in, especially since votes will eat up the "He was there throughout all 14 titles" thing.

I agree he shouldn't have called him out. They're both classy vets, he should know better.

And I'm pretty sure Chipper is 3rd in SH OPS+ (Berkman is second), but I'm far too tired and lazy to look it up now.

446 rock on, yankz! it's super late (4:30am), so i hope you're asleep. i don't have to work til a late rock gig tomorrow nite, so i'm good for an all-nighter...

wow, i need to check the career OPS+ for switch hitters to get a better bearing on the situation. it really is amazing how chipper pretty much went from bad guy to good guy in the perceptions' eye. murray seemed to be a good guy on/off the field but not with the media. his latest offerings as dodgers hitting coach certainly can't help his cause. his numbers speak loudly though. hopefully chipper has a few good years left and his numbers speak loudly, too. (esp. 'coz it'll piss off muts fans!!!)

2007-07-06 01:42:15
448.   thelarmis
ooh, and if my last post was a bit esoteric, please blame it on the beer - of course, eddie murray is in the hall of fame. i think chipper is on his way, but he certainly needs a few more productive years...

Did a little math:

Anyone think the Yanks can wild card with less than 95 wins?

Just getting to that point means 55-25 (.687 - 111 win pace) from today forward. Without having made any significant changes to roster, I just don't see how it's even remotely possible.

Meh.

Whoa, bantering all night, good job.

Does anyone know what the record is (or how to find it) for the fewest balls thrown in one game?

Red Barrett of the Braves threw only 58 pitches in a complete game in 1944. But maybe they don't keep balls/strikes records from that long ago?

I'll probably ask this question again in the next thread.
