It wasn't pretty, but the Yankees succeeded in sweeping the Pirates at home for the second time in three years, running their regular-season record against Pittsburgh to 6-0, which just happens to match the Bombers' record over their last six games.

The Yanks looked like they were going to cruise to victory after forcing Shawn Chacon to throw 39 pitches in a three-run bottom of the first that lasted 20 minutes, but Tyler Clippard had his worst major league outing, coughing up two of those three runs in the top of the second then, after the Yanks got those two back in the third, a four spot in the fourth to give the Pirates a 6-5 lead. Clippard's day ended with two outs in the fourth after he surrendered a two-run double to Jose Bautista on his 90th pitch of the game. Fortunately, Chacon followed in kind, exiting with one out in the bottom of the fourth after surrendering back to back singles to Derek Jeter and Bobby Abreu, the later on Chacon's 96th pitch. Jonah Sharpless, sporting a 12.27 ERA, replaced Chacon, fell behind Alex Rodriguez 2-0, the surrendered a three-run bomb that made it 8-6 Yanks. The laugher, at long last, was on.

In relief of Clippard, Sean Henn, Luis Vizcaino, Scott Proctor, and Mike Myers combined to pitch 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and three walks. Proctor and Henn, who earned the win in his first appearance since being recalled (Chris Britton was sent down to make room for Clemens on Saturday),did the bulk of the work with two innings a piece. Meanwhile, the Yanks added five more runs to their lead with a two-spot in the sixth on another Alex Rodriguez homer (off the freshly-promoted Musami Kuwata) and a three-spot in the seventh kicked off, believe it or not, by Miguel Cairo and Wil Nieves. The scoring was capped off by a two-run double by Bobby Abreu, who had tripled in the first and went 4 for 4 with a walk, four runs scored, and three RBIs on the day. Final score: 13-6 Yankees.

After winning just five of their first 18 series, the Yankees have now won their last three in a row. Their current six-game winning streak and 9-2 surge are their best of the season. They are now tied with the Twins for fourth in the Wild Card race, 5.5 games behind the Tigers, surprising Mariners, and injury plagued A's. One thing they are not however, is a .500 team, though that could change if they can take their winning streak to a lucky seven with a win against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

I told a coworker of mine (who is a big Mets fan) the day after the "Ha!" incident:

You watch - a couple of months from now, the Yankees will be right in the thick of the race and everyone is going to look back and say that was the moment -- that was when they turned their season around. On a little league play by the highest paid player in the game.

Eleven games does not a turnaround make, but I'm sticking to that. Right about now, the Tigers, Mariners and A's are all checking the rear view mirror and they can see a big semi rolling right up behind them. The Sox fans never stopped checking...even when it was 14.5. ;-)

I actually believe this week will be the real test - Webb on Tuesday could be rhythm-breaking and we need to get at least 2 out of 3, and another 2 out of 3 this weekend to keep it going. If we can't do it while Abreu and Alex are locked in, we'll never get it done.

4 I think the Abreu-A-Rod connection is fascinating. Without having looked at the numbers, they do seem to feed off each other. I wonder if that will make the Yanks more inclined to pick up Abreu's option, to try to convince A-Rod to stay?

I also wonder if the numbers do match up, but I don't have time to look now.

Not that I'm thinking the Yankees will catch the Red Sox, but the team did pick up four games on them over the last ten. 8-2 vs. 4-6, let's hope that trend continues.

4 I'm with you, but its not the wildcard. Of course, it won't be without the Red Sox help, but they always blunder and find a way to lose the lead.

Everyone always says its about the pitching, but with the Yanks potent offense, its about scoring five or more runs every game and getting alright pitching.

8 One would think the kind of pitching the Yankees' been getting from Wang and Pettitte is more than alright. However, if you were talking about the pitching on average, then perhaps you were right.

9 Considering how well they have pitched, which I agree has been great, its unbelievable to see how mediocre their records look. Just shows you how important the offense is in this type of team not to mention some semblance of middle relief!

11 I'm not so worried about who's on the team, but whether they'll have enough gas in the tank come August. The way Torre is using the bullpen, their arms will fall off shortly after the all-star break. And has anyone noticed that Abreu and A-Rod haven't had a full game off and Jeter and Cano have only had one. Meanwhile, yesterday was Jorge's first full day off in a month and he's on pace for about 100 more ABs than he had in each of the last 3 years. Cairo and Nieves are on pace to get only 100 ABs each and who knows if Basak will even get dirt on his shoes unless there's a blow out in progress. Torre won't play them as much as maybe he would have done with Flaherty or Bernie or Phillips in years past. And that means the rest of the team is going to get awful tired through July. Cashman better get that phone working.

15 if i were ca$hman, i'd hope that the team kept up the current pace for another week or two. it might help him get a better deal as far as trades go.

if they tank, other GMs will smell desperation on him. let them climb back into the race... or at least climb closer if possible... then land the pieces needed to spell the guys who will need a day off or 12.

meanwhile we just need to cross our fingers and hope that everyone can maintain their current workload until then.

15 "Cairo and Nieves are on pace to get only 100 ABs each and who knows if Basak will even get dirt on his shoes unless there's a blow out in progress."

First, is this a bad thing?

Second, now that Cairo is the starting 1B, the pace of ABs will increase dramatically (though in reference to your main point, his ABs will come at teh expense of Phelps, not in order to rest Jeter, Cano, or A-Rod.

"Cashman better get that phone working."

Yes--to get a real 1B or at least credible benchers. Or maybe even to carry a back-up OF who can actually, you know, play in the OF (not just DH).

Local radio here in NY, specifically Roberts and Beningo, are severely downplaying the Clemens start - 6IP, 3 runs in their opinion does not make a good start. 'Mediocre at best' was the exact quote, I believe...

Really? I thought that line was the very definition of a 'quality start'.

Granted this is coming from two Mets fans who STILL haven't gotten over the Piazza stuff.

2007-06-11 07:57:44

19 The line on Clemens you mention leaves out the 7K's which is nothing to scoff at. He got a little deep in counts and threw too many pitches for just 6 innings, but it was his start of the year.

Based on my theory of score 5 or more and get alright pitching, I'd say, it was just right?

19 Perhaps they meant he hasn't faced a quality lineup or at least one without a pitcher in it. I thought he did fine, but would definitely like to see more before saying that he is the Clemens we are expecting to see.
2007-06-11 08:43:51
23.   Shaun P
22 Maybe I'm being a little pessimistic, but that's the Clemens I expected to see his first start out. That was basically a mostly better than league-average start for Rocket (4.50 ERA, 7.5 H/9, 3 BB/9, 10.5 K/9, 0 HR/9, 1.17 WHIP vs AL league average (according to BP) of 4.41 ERA, 9.14 H/9, 3.38 BB/9, 6.40 K/9, 1.01 HR/9, 1.39 WHIP).

I expect the ERA will go down some, and probably the K/9 rate too, but if Rocket keeps that up all year, I'll be very happy. To expect Roger to have an ERA in the lows 2 is not realistic, IMHO - this is the AL, after all.

2007-06-11 09:32:42
24.   Chyll Will
23 I don't see how that's pessimistic. In fact, it was pretty much exactly what was expected, so it's a success based on that alone. Perhaps we've (the coaching staff and fans, not the economic fundamentalists) finally realized that there is reason to temper our expectations (Randy, Matsuzaka, etc.) and go easy on him, all things considered. I don't expect Clemens to be Cy Youngish even in July, so these results are positive. I'll be happy to see him match a consistently realistic set of benchmarks in the next three outings without injury. Who does he potentially pitch against in those games?

8 A couple of weeks ago I was thinking that this Red Sox team might be heading for a Yankees-circa-'98 like season but I now feel dramatically different...and I think its because I was coming to that initial conclusion from a strictly emotional perspective. On further examination, I see a Red Sox team that is not without it's major flaws. Lugo has been dismal, Drew has been unimpressive at best, and their pen is mediocre beyond Papelbon and Okajima.

They have been living a charmed life in regards to health but no team goes an entire season without suffering a major injury or two, especially in this day and age when it seems like every tom, dick and harry is going down with a hamstring injury.

Wakefield is 40+, Schilling is 44, Beckett is a finger blister away from the DL, and Dice-K is on pace to throw the second most innings of his career. At this pace -- and as long as Francona continues to let him throw 120 pitches like he did yesterday -- then his effectiveness will suffer in a new league and new country.

As long as the Yanks keep it relatively close by the All Star Break, the bad luck and injuries suffered by the Yanks and the charmed life of the Sox will even themselves out.

27 "don't stop believin'" can't be the yankees' theme song (thank goodness.) at the end of the white sox's world series victory parade, when everyone was on a stage, taking turns at the microphone, steve perry somehow appeared, grabbed a hand of a sox player in each of his, and decided he'd sing an accapella version of the song.

No record collection is complete without Journey's Greatest Hits and the first Cars album.

You can go deeper than that with the Cars (a hits comp is probably a must as well), but not with Journey. Those going deeper with the Cars should proceed to Candy-O, Heartbeat City, and Shake It Up in that order.

35,36 According to Wikipedia, the whole thing with that started when Joe Crede and A.J. Pierzynski "went to a bar and screamed "Play some freakin' Journey!" to a bad lounge singer." Implied, the Steve Perry a capella was a scripted moment.

On the other hand, Pierzinski singing was just salt in the wound; not uncommon for him apparently...

Addedum to my post 36 - I have a confession - my first "rock" concert ever was Journey & Bryan Adams waaaay back in 1983. March 1983 to be exact. Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in lovely downtown Uniondale, NY.

Bryan Adams kicked ass tho'!

okay, i wasn't gonna chime in on this, but i have to defend Journey's honor! this group goes waaaaay beyond the radio friendly hits that most consider to be cheesefrog.

journey actually started out in the mid 70's as an instrumental fusion act with zero aspirations to be popular. they were on Columbia records b/c the core of the group had come from Santana and were breaking out on their own. they added Frank Zappa's drummer and eventually replaced him with Jean Luc Ponty's. we are talking about some serious, serious, accomplished musicians/players.

they were a major force live. recently there's been a great and cheap cd/dvd release of the Escape tour. it was originally aired as (i think) the 1st MTV live concert, in 1981. steve perry might be a jerk and pale hose fan, but he has one of the best male voices in rock. ever.

journey found a niche with the AOR-type songs and followed that formula to superstardom. it afforded them a plethora of opportunities in the music industry, collectively and individually, that they're still riding 25+ years later.

the song "Don't Stop Believin'" is big in the drummers' world. steve smith, is one of the greatest drummers of all-time. he's not a "rock" guy, nor does he care much for Journey, but like i alluded to before, his time in the group has done wonders for his career, which is mostly firmed in jazz/fusion music.

on the song in question, he satisfies the layperson (and record company!) by laying down 1/4 notes on the kick drum (commonly known as "4 on the floor"), and plays a left-hand lead on the hi-hat. this opens up his right hand to play cool melodies between the bell of the ride and toms. this was very creative and innovative for 1981!

journey did a great job of satisfying the masses and staying true to their musicianship by varying their tempos, feels, dynamics and excellent arrangement skills, not to mention solid songwriting, amazing vocals & harmonies and powerful live performances.

right around the time that the main hits were being put out (Escape, Frontiers), they released a little known record in Japan only (since reissued here) - a soundtrack Dream, After Dream, which was mostly instrumental and had lots of Classical music in there. Neal Schon, founding member, is the son of a symphony conductor, who worked on that record, as well.

Journey is a very important act in RnR, waaaay deeper than anything the Cars can claim, not that i'm dissing the cars. and not that i listen to journey all the time either - it's just that they're GREAT!!!

k, sorry bout all that. end rant //

Even last night, watching "The Sopranos" I thought "Don't Stop Believing" was REO Speedwagon, or Rush until my wife set me straight.

If you're going to talk tunes from the 1981 era, you guys are leaving out Styx, who did the song that was the senior prom theme song for something like 2/3 of the country that year. Although thank god not my h.s.

For all of the late 1970s stuff I hear coming out of jukes these days when the college kids are showing off their "musicology", I am so happy that they are not playing REO or Styx. Hard to be believe that I'd be saying this almost 30 years later, but AC/DC seems to have stood the test of time a lot better.

But unfortunately my favorite bartender has discovered Toto and has Africa on her iPod rotation when she plugs it into the sound system.

67 Sorry.

It's on the "Heavy Metal" soundtrack, so it's the one Journey tune that I end up hearing a fair amount even these days.

I'll just go back to working in the coal mine.

68 "I may bust out an accapella version of it on the subway back home.

Nobody take the F or V around 6pm to 2nd Ave."

alright. if you actually do that, please record it and share it with us here.

i'd embrace the idea then. if you feel that strongly about it, how could i not?

After my initial WTF moment, I have decided that I loved the ending of the Sopranos. I think Tony was wacked unless years from now Gandolfini's career is stagnant and he needs the money so he agrees to to a movie. In the meanwhile, I live with the memory of Phil Leotardo getting wacked and crushed and that A.J. is a spoilt brat.

To the Bronx Banter crew, I say:

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to the feelin'
Streetlight people

77 I saw exactly three minutes of it. Loved the movie stylings, not the show itself. But hey, I do not hate anyone for loving it.

Finally I get some work. So, I'll see you all later on >;)

i wasn't expecting to like it at all, but i was hooked instantaneously.

Yankee Fan In Boston,

It must be torture up there in beantown these days? I lived up in Back Bay for a few years, but that was during the good old days when Sox fans would see a Yankee hat and they were immediately put in their place.

Imagine if I pulled my Journey stunt up there in beantown? I'd get my ass kicked twice. Once for wearing a Yankee hat, and again for wearing a yankee hat while singing a Journey song.

Damn it...I CANT SHAKE THIS SONG!

77 Ditto - except for when I saw the ending on TV this morning. Is David Chase maybe a White Sox fan? I understand the music for Sopranos episodes has always been picked with care. I haven't been able to not think of the White Sox when I've heard that Journey song.

57 I've already annointed "Rise Above" by Black Flag as the theme song for the 2007 Yankees. Get out of the gate a little earlier next year.

84 an old bay area thrash metal band called Evildead covered "Rise Above" back in '88. even named an ep of theirs after it.

83 I think the music was picked with care, taking into account the lyrics:

Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice,
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

I think Chase whacked the audience but not Tony. We never saw it coming and everything went black.

All of the characters (movie/show) "never end" and "goes on and on and on and on..."

We just can't watch anymore...

39 Hey, Abby, I'll go you one better. I don't know why I'm admitting this, but I saw Debbie Gibson in concert probably around 1988 when I was 15. It was at Jones Beach and I allowed myself to get dragged along with a couple of friends and of course, there were girls involved. God, what a terrible concert.

The highlight, though, was when my friend lit up a joint, much to the horror of the moms of the preteens around us. I don't quite remember what happened, but I seem to recall there was an usher involved.

If it's at all possible, I think the "music" was even worse under the influence.

So there it is.

28 That stat (Abreu saw 45 pitches yesterday) sounded unbelievable, so I checked: he saw 35 in his 5 appearances. (9 for the triple, seven for the first single, 5 for the second single, seven for the walk, seven for the double.)

Considering your source, NotGiving, it's not all that surprising that the stat wasn't right. Not to take anything away from Abreu -- 35 pitches is very impressive for one day!

100... and you did mention during a thread some months ago that you live (or lived) in and around Baltimore, MD.

With your innate statistical skills and focus on fundamentals, not to mention your Mondrian (or Eliasstical as the case may be) recall of events, not to mention it's relative closeness in geography, I gather that you either are from, or are a strong supporter and admirer of a renowned event in Williamsport, PA ...

Wsporter is short for William sporter!

97 It was "One Dollars Worth" what drove me to law school.

Picking a name for this site is, I believe, a weighty decision and nothing that should be undertaken without some thought. When I was a child it took me years to learn to read. The Gift of the Maji was the first story I ever read in full. I have always held W.S.Porter or O'Henry in high esteem and identified with his strugle against self inflicted wounds. Besides I just liked the sound of wsporter. It was either that or hhmunro but that somehow seemed to obvious and way to british for my liking. Besides the Henry Aaron double entendre was hard to pass up.

So at long last I am unmasked. When I return it will not be as me. A tip of my cap to thee, Yankz.

103 Totally awesome. I went through a major O. Henry obsession: the summer after college, I was couch surfing and ended up apartment sitting on 18th street. The place was just a block away from Pete's Tavern, where O. Henry was a regular back in the day and wrote a bunch of stories, including, I think, the Gift of the Magi. They've even got a sign above the actual booth (or the supposed booth, I guess, but I chose to believe them and sat there all the time). Anyway, he had an absolutely fascinating life -- convicted of embezzlement, possibly falsely, fled to Honduras, returned home to be with his dying wife, went to prison, starting writing, became a massive celebrity under a pen name, lied shamelessly in interviews ("I then went to Honduras to help a friend scout fruit tree plantations!"), slowly drank himself to death.

Very long-winded way of saying "nice screen name," but hey, it's an off-day.

107 I apologize; I figured you were too modest for Picasso or Tolousse-Lautrec (I don't take you as an impressionist), besides being cubist means you look at everything! I also figured Rockwell would be a backhanded compliment, and I don't know what you might think if I said Jackson Pollock. Forgive me?

88 Dude, you win! Oh...WAIT!!! I got one more!!

I just remembered that I saw Sha-Na-Na when I was about 8 years old at Westbury Music Fair! (Seriously, I did...I cannot make this up!!!)

112 (sigh) I saw Sha-Na-Na at the Dutchess County Fair a few years back. I wanted to run away, but the so-called friend I was with instisted on staying for at least one song for the high camp. I ended up hitchiking back to the train station for home. If it wasn't for the fact that I grew up in that area, I'd probably still be lost... I feel your pain Abby; though yours is more deep-seeded >;)
