It wasn't pretty, but the Yankees succeeded in sweeping the Pirates at home for the second time in three years, running their regular-season record against Pittsburgh to 6-0, which just happens to match the Bombers' record over their last six games.
The Yanks looked like they were going to cruise to victory after forcing Shawn Chacon to throw 39 pitches in a three-run bottom of the first that lasted 20 minutes, but Tyler Clippard had his worst major league outing, coughing up two of those three runs in the top of the second then, after the Yanks got those two back in the third, a four spot in the fourth to give the Pirates a 6-5 lead. Clippard's day ended with two outs in the fourth after he surrendered a two-run double to Jose Bautista on his 90th pitch of the game. Fortunately, Chacon followed in kind, exiting with one out in the bottom of the fourth after surrendering back to back singles to Derek Jeter and Bobby Abreu, the later on Chacon's 96th pitch. Jonah Sharpless, sporting a 12.27 ERA, replaced Chacon, fell behind Alex Rodriguez 2-0, the surrendered a three-run bomb that made it 8-6 Yanks. The laugher, at long last, was on.
In relief of Clippard, Sean Henn, Luis Vizcaino, Scott Proctor, and Mike Myers combined to pitch 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and three walks. Proctor and Henn, who earned the win in his first appearance since being recalled (Chris Britton was sent down to make room for Clemens on Saturday),did the bulk of the work with two innings a piece. Meanwhile, the Yanks added five more runs to their lead with a two-spot in the sixth on another Alex Rodriguez homer (off the freshly-promoted Musami Kuwata) and a three-spot in the seventh kicked off, believe it or not, by Miguel Cairo and Wil Nieves. The scoring was capped off by a two-run double by Bobby Abreu, who had tripled in the first and went 4 for 4 with a walk, four runs scored, and three RBIs on the day. Final score: 13-6 Yankees.
After winning just five of their first 18 series, the Yankees have now won their last three in a row. Their current six-game winning streak and 9-2 surge are their best of the season. They are now tied with the Twins for fourth in the Wild Card race, 5.5 games behind the Tigers, surprising Mariners, and injury plagued A's. One thing they are not however, is a .500 team, though that could change if they can take their winning streak to a lucky seven with a win against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
You watch - a couple of months from now, the Yankees will be right in the thick of the race and everyone is going to look back and say that was the moment -- that was when they turned their season around. On a little league play by the highest paid player in the game.
Eleven games does not a turnaround make, but I'm sticking to that. Right about now, the Tigers, Mariners and A's are all checking the rear view mirror and they can see a big semi rolling right up behind them. The Sox fans never stopped checking...even when it was 14.5. ;-)
I actually believe this week will be the real test - Webb on Tuesday could be rhythm-breaking and we need to get at least 2 out of 3, and another 2 out of 3 this weekend to keep it going. If we can't do it while Abreu and Alex are locked in, we'll never get it done.
I also wonder if the numbers do match up, but I don't have time to look now.
Everyone always says its about the pitching, but with the Yanks potent offense, its about scoring five or more runs every game and getting alright pitching.
Really? I'm not counting the Yanks out (of the wildcard or the AL East) but Bucky Dent and Bill Buckner have long since retired...
HA!
if they tank, other GMs will smell desperation on him. let them climb back into the race... or at least climb closer if possible... then land the pieces needed to spell the guys who will need a day off or 12.
meanwhile we just need to cross our fingers and hope that everyone can maintain their current workload until then.
First, is this a bad thing?
Second, now that Cairo is the starting 1B, the pace of ABs will increase dramatically (though in reference to your main point, his ABs will come at teh expense of Phelps, not in order to rest Jeter, Cano, or A-Rod.
"Cashman better get that phone working."
Yes--to get a real 1B or at least credible benchers. Or maybe even to carry a back-up OF who can actually, you know, play in the OF (not just DH).
Really? I thought that line was the very definition of a 'quality start'.
Granted this is coming from two Mets fans who STILL haven't gotten over the Piazza stuff.
Based on my theory of score 5 or more and get alright pitching, I'd say, it was just right?
I expect the ERA will go down some, and probably the K/9 rate too, but if Rocket keeps that up all year, I'll be very happy. To expect Roger to have an ERA in the lows 2 is not realistic, IMHO - this is the AL, after all.
They have been living a charmed life in regards to health but no team goes an entire season without suffering a major injury or two, especially in this day and age when it seems like every tom, dick and harry is going down with a hamstring injury.
Wakefield is 40+, Schilling is 44, Beckett is a finger blister away from the DL, and Dice-K is on pace to throw the second most innings of his career. At this pace -- and as long as Francona continues to let him throw 120 pitches like he did yesterday -- then his effectiveness will suffer in a new league and new country.
As long as the Yanks keep it relatively close by the All Star Break, the bad luck and injuries suffered by the Yanks and the charmed life of the Sox will even themselves out.
In honor of The Sopranos finale last night, I think the new theme song for the 2007 Yankees should be "Dont Stop Believing" by Journey. I cant get that song out of my head today.
"Dont Stop Believin!"
in 5 at bats, bobby abreu saw 45 pitches.
that is staggering!
Jim Dean, I know you hear what I'm talkin' about.
Speaking of amusing, whenever I think of Journey, I think of how much better The Cars always seemed to be. Am I wrong for that?
29 Their lining up their ducks. You watch, PTBNL will come out of Trenton somehow...
I still haven't seen minute one of the Sopranos, but then again I'm too cheap to shell out for HBO.
it was very uncomfortable to watch. i had to rid that memory from my mind last night as i watched the finale. i hate steve perry for invading that moment. ...jerk.
30 the cars were a solid group. word.
Cars were one of my favorites too. R.I.P Ben Orr...
You can go deeper than that with the Cars (a hits comp is probably a must as well), but not with Journey. Those going deeper with the Cars should proceed to Candy-O, Heartbeat City, and Shake It Up in that order.
On the other hand, Pierzinski singing was just salt in the wound; not uncommon for him apparently...
I was 15...I didn't know any better. I was a lemming following the masses off the cliff!
Bryan Adams kicked ass tho'!
journey actually started out in the mid 70's as an instrumental fusion act with zero aspirations to be popular. they were on Columbia records b/c the core of the group had come from Santana and were breaking out on their own. they added Frank Zappa's drummer and eventually replaced him with Jean Luc Ponty's. we are talking about some serious, serious, accomplished musicians/players.
they were a major force live. recently there's been a great and cheap cd/dvd release of the Escape tour. it was originally aired as (i think) the 1st MTV live concert, in 1981. steve perry might be a jerk and pale hose fan, but he has one of the best male voices in rock. ever.
journey found a niche with the AOR-type songs and followed that formula to superstardom. it afforded them a plethora of opportunities in the music industry, collectively and individually, that they're still riding 25+ years later.
the song "Don't Stop Believin'" is big in the drummers' world. steve smith, is one of the greatest drummers of all-time. he's not a "rock" guy, nor does he care much for Journey, but like i alluded to before, his time in the group has done wonders for his career, which is mostly firmed in jazz/fusion music.
on the song in question, he satisfies the layperson (and record company!) by laying down 1/4 notes on the kick drum (commonly known as "4 on the floor"), and plays a left-hand lead on the hi-hat. this opens up his right hand to play cool melodies between the bell of the ride and toms. this was very creative and innovative for 1981!
journey did a great job of satisfying the masses and staying true to their musicianship by varying their tempos, feels, dynamics and excellent arrangement skills, not to mention solid songwriting, amazing vocals & harmonies and powerful live performances.
right around the time that the main hits were being put out (Escape, Frontiers), they released a little known record in Japan only (since reissued here) - a soundtrack Dream, After Dream, which was mostly instrumental and had lots of Classical music in there. Neal Schon, founding member, is the son of a symphony conductor, who worked on that record, as well.
Journey is a very important act in RnR, waaaay deeper than anything the Cars can claim, not that i'm dissing the cars. and not that i listen to journey all the time either - it's just that they're GREAT!!!
k, sorry bout all that. end rant //
Even last night, watching "The Sopranos" I thought "Don't Stop Believing" was REO Speedwagon, or Rush until my wife set me straight.
My wife probably couldn't distinguish a Bob Dylan tune from a Beatles song, but she could name that Journey joint in about 5 notes.
i never would've expected a discussion of the finer points of reo speedwagon, journey and rush taking place today.
off days sure are strange...
43 i never played the kiss pinball game, but it sure looked bad. ...as in good.
Rise up, gather 'round
Rock this place to the ground
Burn it up, let's go for broke
Watch the night go up in smoke
Rock on...ROCK ON
Drive me crazier
No serenade, no fire brigade
Just-a Pyromania!!!
46 Well, what are ya gonna do? Right now I'm making frightening musical compilations and analogies in my mind... for example, try to imagine a remix compilation of Journey's greatest hits by Prince Paul (though I imagine Dangermouse vs. Bryan Adams is more likely...) Early Chicago or Genesis remixed by Hank Shocklee? Rick Rubin tackles Men at Work??
For all of the late 1970s stuff I hear coming out of jukes these days when the college kids are showing off their "musicology", I am so happy that they are not playing REO or Styx. Hard to be believe that I'd be saying this almost 30 years later, but AC/DC seems to have stood the test of time a lot better.
But unfortunately my favorite bartender has discovered Toto and has Africa on her iPod rotation when she plugs it into the sound system.
i highly recommend watching all of these clips if you've yet to do so.

brilliant stuff.
all your early '80s stars are there... you've got your christopher cross, your hall & oates, michael mcdonald & the doobies, and the incomparable kenny loggins.
I can't lump Rush in with the others (especially lyrically), but Journey, Styx and REO, ugh.
And when I first heard them on the radio, I'd mix up Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers with Cheap Trick but Petty & crew have certainly gotten lots better.
So any truth to the rumor that Proctor's getting sent to Trenton for the day, just so he can get some work in?
I am of the firm opionion, however, that the way the song was used last night in the Sopranos was very cool. And yes, I am one of the few people that actually enjoyed the ending.
I am unofficially annointing "Dont Stop Believing" by Journey as the unofficial theme song of the 2007 Yankees.
Nobody can stop me.
The damage has already been done.
I am willing to deal with the consequences.
the receptionist wants to kill me.
and no, you cannot stop me.
Wow, 80s day at the Banter.
53 Just wait until the NY-Penn League season starts. Proctor can go get early work in with the kids at Staten Island, and then be back in the Bronx in time for the Yankee game. He'll be in heaven, I'm sure - or at least his arm will be. ;)
Big difference.
Nobody take the F or V around 6pm to 2nd Ave.
I might just serenade you with JOURNEY!
ps...the real question is, will you throw a dollar in the hat?
http://tinyurl.com/avno6
i'd be willing to accept any song from these.
(before that other one, anyway.)
crap. i just remembered that steve perry is portrayed in one of these, too...
ugh...
It's on the "Heavy Metal" soundtrack, so it's the one Journey tune that I end up hearing a fair amount even these days.
I'll just go back to working in the coal mine.
Nobody take the F or V around 6pm to 2nd Ave."
alright. if you actually do that, please record it and share it with us here.
i'd embrace the idea then. if you feel that strongly about it, how could i not?
To the Bronx Banter crew, I say:
Don't stop believin'
Hold on to the feelin'
Streetlight people
Finally I get some work. So, I'll see you all later on >;)
i wasn't expecting to like it at all, but i was hooked instantaneously.
It must be torture up there in beantown these days? I lived up in Back Bay for a few years, but that was during the good old days when Sox fans would see a Yankee hat and they were immediately put in their place.
Imagine if I pulled my Journey stunt up there in beantown? I'd get my ass kicked twice. Once for wearing a Yankee hat, and again for wearing a yankee hat while singing a Journey song.
Damn it...I CANT SHAKE THIS SONG!
Working hard to get my fill,
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice,
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on
I think Chase whacked the audience but not Tony. We never saw it coming and everything went black.
All of the characters (movie/show) "never end" and "goes on and on and on and on..."
We just can't watch anymore...
The highlight, though, was when my friend lit up a joint, much to the horror of the moms of the preteens around us. I don't quite remember what happened, but I seem to recall there was an usher involved.
If it's at all possible, I think the "music" was even worse under the influence.
So there it is.
You totally get a pass now on your irrational admiration for Miguel Cairo.
Considering your source, NotGiving, it's not all that surprising that the stat wasn't right. Not to take anything away from Abreu -- 35 pitches is very impressive for one day!
With your innate statistical skills and focus on fundamentals, not to mention your Mondrian (or Eliasstical as the case may be) recall of events, not to mention it's relative closeness in geography, I gather that you either are from, or are a strong supporter and admirer of a renowned event in Williamsport, PA ...
Wsporter is short for William sporter!
Picking a name for this site is, I believe, a weighty decision and nothing that should be undertaken without some thought. When I was a child it took me years to learn to read. The Gift of the Maji was the first story I ever read in full. I have always held W.S.Porter or O'Henry in high esteem and identified with his strugle against self inflicted wounds. Besides I just liked the sound of wsporter. It was either that or hhmunro but that somehow seemed to obvious and way to british for my liking. Besides the Henry Aaron double entendre was hard to pass up.
So at long last I am unmasked. When I return it will not be as me. A tip of my cap to thee, Yankz.
Very long-winded way of saying "nice screen name," but hey, it's an off-day.
I just remembered that I saw Sha-Na-Na when I was about 8 years old at Westbury Music Fair! (Seriously, I did...I cannot make this up!!!)
Good God, I can't believe I forgot about that one (maybe I blocked it out???) Remember those guys???
