Roger Clemens gave the Yankees pretty much what anyone could have expected from him yesterday: six innings, three runs, couple of walks and seven strikeouts. His fastball is not up to snuff yet and he worked too many deep counts, but his split-fingered fastball was excellent and he looked just fine fielding his position. The Yankee offense did the rest, with a generous hand from some Bad News Bears fielding by the Pirates; Melkawitz made a fine catch in center field and the Yanks cruised, 9-3.

That makes it five straight for the Bombers who go for the sweep this afternoon against our old pal, Shawn Chacon. It is great that the Yanks have won another series but it will be a real buzz-kill if they don't sweep the Pirates. So on that note...

Let's Go Yan-Kees!

It would be better if the Diamondbacks would do something worthwhile.

It feels good to have Clemens back. Gotta feel good about a rotation that is basically Wang, Pettite, Moose, Clemens, and Clippard/Hughes. I like it.

Congrats to Chris Basak on his MLB debut. He pinch ran for ARod and then played 3B in the 9th. All were joyful except maybe Andy Cannizaro. May the Chris Basak epoch be bountiful.

Chacon will baffle to bombers for 3 innings before they start blasting him in the 4th. Yankees 8 Welfare Queens (my name for the pirates for obvious reasons) 4.

I know that pitching rotations aren't deliberately manipulated to screw a particular team, but is anyone else annoyed the Dback. Brandon Webb isn't pitching against the sawx, but will pitch against the Yanks?

3 If you know the rotations aren't being manipulated why are you whining about it? That's real classy coming from someone attaching insulting names to the Pirates. Sounds like you're insecure.

Well, they get to get re-acquianted with their old friend Randy today (who'll be missing the Bombers, but who will get a lovely reception I'm sure).

5 6 The whole house money thing is a bit complicated these days, now that we don't know if Cairo is the back-up or starter at 1B. If he's the starter, then house money means Phelps and Nieves. If he's the back-up, however, then really look out. The total lack of a back-up OF will, I think, make it difficult to rest the Ofs, no--unless Cairo or Basak get swapped into RF or LF.

7 And while I posted, I see this line-up. Well, at least Basak isn't starting for A-Rod. I guess this is the old day-game-after-a-day-game-before-an-off-day-no-DH-for-Jorge.

The dislike between Yankee and Dback management is well known dating back to the David wells signing in his second tour of NY. Also, the steep price demanded for the big useless in 2004 was part of that.

As for the welfare queens, the analogy fits. They get a welfare check based on the luxury tax, refuse to put that money into their team, and refuse to adapt while teams in harder divisions with lesser ballparks (the A's and twins) thrive. Even while they refuse to spend money and cash those checks their fans complain about the yankees when they should complain about the bozos running their team. Yeah, they're welfare queens and you're too mentally myopic to understand that. I'm not scared of them, I pity them.

The Yankees are too old to have a full-time DH. Though that's probably the least of their worries at the moment.

13.   randym77
12 Not just Damon. Giambi, too, when he was the DH. We have a lot of old players with good bats, and it would be nice if we could rest them without taking their bats out of the lineup.

Boy, Obi-Shawn looks like he's put on a few pounds. He looks a lot bigger than I remember him.

2007-06-10 10:40:20
14.   monkeypants
13 If Giambi is Giambi, you can use up the DH--with older players (Giambi included) simply rested now and again. But Damon doesn't hit enough to justify occupying the DH spot exclusively, and with Giambi down they need to be more creative in keeping as many offensive players in the line-up as possible while still resting older players.

By the way, I really do hate the collision play at home.

2007-06-10 11:52:25
65.   cult of basebaal
it depends on the stadium, here's what BP wrote about it:

The new version of MLB.com's Gameday application, then called Enhanced Gameday, was first unveiled in time for the 2006 post season. That version was the first to weave into the display the PITCHf/x data used to show the speed, location, and trajectory of each pitch. Previously, the location data was displayed after it was entered manually by operators of the Gameday application in the press box. The PITCHf/x technology was developed by Sportvision, the company that began with tracking hockey pucks in 1996, and later gave us the "1st & Ten" yellow lines so familiar to football viewers. Gameday has been in use for Major League games since 2001. In short, the system relies on three cameras installed at the ballpark that triangulate on each pitch at 30 frames per second. Three computers in a truck outside the park then process the data and calculate the various data points the system tracks, including the position, velocity, and acceleration of the ball. The cameras and software know where to look for pitches (actually they look for objects traveling between 40 and 120 mph), since when the system is first installed a virtual grid is laid down at each park marking home plate and the pitcher's mound.

another problem is that gameday uses a true strike zone. that's what umpires should use also, but they don't. a game strike zone is wider and shorter than a true one. whether that's good or not, that's how pitchers have to pitch during a game. and if you call strikes in a certain place in the 1st and 3rd innings, you have to call them in the 2nd and 4th.

Cairo really is the player of the game. He sparked the whole offense with that critical sac fly, and he just saved ten, maybe twelve runs by making that pick at first (even though he actually didn't really make the pick and the ump blew the call--but you have to credit Cairo for great acting).

We've all had this discussion before, but there must be some cut off point when pitching say three or four innings every two or (preferably) three days is not as bad as pitching one inning every day (or four out of five, etc).

we should certainly take 2 of 3 over the next 5 series. hopefully that'll be the minimum, with a nice sweep or two in there. if we do that and have a good homestand after that, we'll be in pretty good shape heading into the break.

I'm too lazy to register so I can't ask it over there, but what's the Yankees' record since the awesome guys at RLYW started embedding that horrible music video?

Anyone watching the Braves/Cubs game? John Smoltz is a lot of fun to have on.

Seamus, as a former resident of the 'burgh, I'm sorry to say the Pirates have no chance to ever be competitive with the Nuttings, McClatchey and Littlefield running the show - they're an embarrassment to baseball.
keep rooting for the Yanks.

256 oh, no fear of that. I have stayed loyal to my childhood teams. I'm from north jersey so a natural yanks fan.

I agree about the pirates. But having to play the yankees for 10 more days would just be unfair. cruel and unusual punishment.

257 Shawn, shawn, shawn, shawn, shawn (I dunno if that's the way to summon Shawn Clap, but he's always good to have around, so go for it >;)

Has anyone acknowledged that the team in present incarnation has stepped up tremendously? In the unfortunate circumstances that has removed Giambi and Scrabble from the lineup (and especially the manner in which Scrabble was removed from the lineup), the rest of the team has suddenly gone into FLAME-ON mode, and as much as I want to say it's because it has come against inferior competition, the last game against Boston in which Mo schooled their best hitters up unto today with thankfully spirited offense from Bobby and Alex, I am more inclined to think that the players have found roles for themselves where they know they can relax and contribute the most. With Joe not having to plug in bad options to soothe egos or justify contracts so much, his decisions have panned out nicely, even if they still involve some controversy (Moose)... I like this and truly hope that the team has found a way to relax and be themselves, be it rallying around fallen comrades or just sticking it to all the haters. I dunno if there's a statistic for this, but I'm sure someone here would be willing to provide that >;)

(yeah I know; work week beginning, so the only answer to that could be nothing other than "cricket, cricket...")

260 Sounds like last year, when Melk and Bernie were playing every day. The old kick in the ass theory.

254 - that horrible video of the girl trying to levitate out of her dress? 6-0 I think. 260 - see above-mentioned video for "stepping up".

263 No way, that video is awesome. I'm talking about that music video, "All I need is a Miracle."
