In case you hadn't heard, Roger Clemens is pitching for the Yankees today. I'm not convinced that he's going to stay healthy this summer. My hunch is that he'll post a record close to .500--maybe 8-6, maybe 7-9--with an ERA under 4.50. Regardless, the Yankees look to extend their season best winning streak this afternoon on a hazy day in the Bronx.

Let's Go Yan-Kees!

Looks like us out of marketers are out of luck - Fox is showing the Mets game, not the Yanks, and mlb.tv is blacked out. Double stink of it is that the Mets game is at 4, so they could really broadcast the Yanks game at 1 and then the Muts afterwards.... Fuggin Fox blackout... I mean, even Rocket's A ball start was on ESPN, this is shit!

Am I missing something? Maybe Fox will decide to broadcast the Yanks after all......

2 Drop me an Email at: wizofoz01 AT comcast DOT net. I might be able to help you get the game on MLB.TV

Wow... we were SO excited to get Clemens. Now, he is a .500 +/- pitcher, who may not even give us 4 months? And for this, poor George pays $18 million?

What an amazing owner George is. No one in their right mind would pay so much for so (relatively) little. We are lucky to have someone who wants to win, and puts his money where his mouth is.

I wonder what the RS or Houston would have paid for Roger.

And how many here think George told Roger something to the effect of "win me a WS before I die"?

What ya REALLY gotta love is when Fox doesn't broadcast a game until 4PM and STILL blackouts the 1PM games. It's just so 'Fair and Balanced'.

"Am I missing something?"

Fox switched to 3:30 games for this season. No idea why, but I assume ratings. If they were as flexible as ESPN, they'd probably try to show the Clemens game-- but they're not. And, besides, Mets/Tigers is far more relevant at this point than Yankees/Pirates (though obviously the presence of Clemens alters that equation somewhat).

Blackout rules suck, though. No question.

85 The N.L. West is 24 games over .500 collectively. The next best division in baseball is the A.L. West at 8 games over. The A.L. East is one game over .500.

Even if you believe the A.L. is the superior league, it's ignorant in the extreme to call the N.L. West the worst division. At the very least, it's the best division in its own league.

2007-06-09 11:10:31
95.   monkeypants
88 I'm not sure what you mean--though 700 is kind slow for mosaic. When it gets bogged down, it just keeps buffering, freezing, and rebuffering. When working properly, you click on Mosaic, which takes eight years to load, then a screen with your email/password comes up (click ok), then eight more years, then the screen with six games should appear.

Double click on the game you want and it shifts to single game mode; then click on "full screen view" to get rid of all the stats, etc. If your game is not one of the six, double click on the game score on the bar at the top and drag it to one of the six game screens.

Did that make any sense at all?

Mosaic is really slow and wonky, but when it works it gives the best full screen view (better than quicktime, whose aspect ration never matches the shape of your computer or TV screen.

204 Leiter talks a lot because he has a lot to say.

Kay talks a lot because he finds the sound of his voice so pleasing.

Case in point, Al gets finished talking about the difference between guys like Clemens and Mariano on the one hand, who have great command, and guys like Farnworth on the other, who don't, talking about things like mechanics and release point, actually explaining a term ("throwing downhill") we hear all the time but don't often know what it means... and Kay follows that up with "That's a nice blue shirt you have on. 229 BP just had a piece by Marc Normandin that argues that Cano is a .290/.320/.475 type hitter.

I hope Normandin is watching this game.

Slow start this season aside, I think Cano will end up hitting close to what he hit last a season, maybe not as high an average but over .300 and with significantly more walks. There will definitely be more that a .030 difference btwn his ba and obp I'd say. If I had to guess, I'd say a .315/.365/.500 line for Robby this season.

250 He has picked up his walk rate, but it's wishful thinking that he'd ever consistently walk 50 or more times a year.

I'd argue with your final line, but he's been mashing in summer his whole (short) career, and he's turning around now.

215 Agreed.

I think Leiter brings a lot to the broadcast.

I don't think he talks nonsense at all. Platitudes sometimes, to be sure, but he usually acknowledges them as such.

He's a smart guy and I learn from him.

259 10 above .800 ops, 11 if you include the midget up in beantown, who hasn't had enough atbats to qualify, with Utley and Upton well over .900

262 Yeah, Utley's over .900.

263 You don't need 50 walks to add .50 to OBP! Only about 30, usually.

But yes, it's nice to not have to rely on some fireworks in the ninth inning for every win finally. Little things early on have been saving us from having to scrap at the end.

263 re the bbs:

Cano will never be Abreu, but he has already got 11 bbs this season, after only 18 all last year. And he seeing about 3.4 p/pa compared to 3.22 last yr and 3.05 his rookie year. Bb/pa up to .045 from .036 last season. His ba and obp were separated by 40 pts coming into today. He's learning. I could see him drawing 35 walks this season, and maybe 50 next year. Baby steps to be sure, but . . .

276.   rabid stan
267 Point taken. I don't think we'll ever be able to talk about him as a guy who has patient at-bats, that's all. The only difference this year is that balls three and four don't have to be behind him to walk him.

If that's good enough for a .360+ OBA without a .330+ AVG, I'm on board.

276 Give him time. I have heard that if you aren't patient in the minors, you don't learn it in the bigs. Hopefully he will be exception. He is already more patient than he was last year.

Anyone want to guess how many walks he had last year? 18 -- he might have hit 20 if he played the whole year.

But Jose Reyes is walking a whole lot more than he used to. So let's get Rickey Henderson in here to teach Robbie how to take a pitch. ;)

Right now if Robbie is an 800 OPS 2nd basemen, he would rank 5th in the AL and 11th in the MLB. Almost everyone ranked above him has twice his number of walks.

And he seemed like the type to swing at intentional walks.

277 We were bantering about this the other day. In general it's true that batters don't get more patient in the Bigs, but there have been important exceptions. Pujols is one, and Reyes is another.

Cano also might improve by eliminating the initial cruddy part of his season. If you look at just his Aprils and Mays, you'd think he was, well, Cairo.

I have to say YES and Kim Jones are making this Clemens comeback nauseating now. I've been really excited for this all week and they are just beating it to the ground. In the pregame interview with Jack Wilson Kim Jones asked him how it will feel to face Roger Clemens as if he was Walter Johnson. Wilson just smiled and said he has faced him before. Then in the postgame she asked what Johnny Damon will tell his kids about the first time playing on his team. He just said "my kids were probably watching the game." IDK I just found the responses to those dumb questions funny.

281 Yeah, he had a freakishly good year in terms of patience--67 BB compared to 38 in his next highest season total. But he did have 16 IBB (by far the most he has had in one season), so he had around 50 'real' BB, still the highest season mark by far.

We'll see how long it lasts--this season he's on pace for about 45.

A few players have dramatically improved patience, like Sammy Sosa. I wonder how much has to do with improved patience, and how much should be attributed to the development of more power compelling opposing pitchers to pitch around them more. Even Soriano occasionally did not swing at pitches far off the plate. Sometimes.

281 I know we have Cano and he is good and our future.

But how many people don't miss Soriano? Last year, in a pitcher's park, he hit 46 homers, stole 41 bases and had 41 doubles.

Man that's impressive. His 941 OPS now would look pretty good in our lineup in the 8th spot. Of course he is 31.

Here's hoping that Cano continues to develop patience and power! He is only 24 after all.

In June, the Yanks have 902 OPS while opponents are 760.

Just got back from the game...not a pretty win, really, but a convincing one.

Man, those Pirates are one awful team. Among other things, I was shocked at the number of basic, fundamental mistakes they make - mental errors, errors in judgment, and so on. Usually firing the manager doesn't matter to a really bad team, but when they execute the basics that terribly, I think it's called for.

Those double steals were sweet.

298 Wow, good for you, JL! That must have nice.

The double steals were sweet.

It's funny you should say it wasn't pretty, because I actually thought it was quite pretty. Lots of good execution, productive outs, 9 runs without the benefit of a dinger, solid enough pitching, defense was solid (nice plays by Melky and Arod) with a couple of DP.

Aside from Cairo not getting that bunt down, I really had no complaints.

What did you have in mind?

Other than Cairo not getting

290 Honestly, I don't think Cano really needs to develop power--he seems to have all the power he needs as it is.

I mean, if he gets stronger or whatever, fine, but his swing is what it should be, I'd hate for him to start thinking about that rightfield porch again or something that gets him away from banging the ball all over the joint.

302 While Roger's durability is second to none. He never even had as good of stretches as Pedro, Maddux, or Randy. I think he may be the best overall package we've seen, but those three had periods of dominance that surpass even Clemens' best stretches.

307 That may be true, but that's the Sandy Koufax argument (shorter-term dominance v. longer-term excellence). One can make the reasonable argument that Clemens overall is the best pitcher in the history of baseball--at least the modern era--but you would be harder pressed to make the same case for the other three.
