The Pittsburgh Pirates
2007-06-08 14:30
by Cliff Corcoran

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a terrible franchise and a terrible baseball team. Their list of attributes in 2007 is as follows:

Jason Bay, LF (.310/.378/.531, 11 HR, 45 RBI)
Ian Snell, RHP (2.91 ERA, 71 K, 10 quality starts)
Tom Gorzelanny, LHP (2.53 ERA, 9 quality starts)
Matt Capps RHP (2.70 ERA, 33 G, 4.00 K/BB)
Damaso Marte LOOGY (1.37 ERA, .125/.222/.125 vs. lefties, 0 XBH)

The Yankees won't see Snell, can pitch around Bay in big spots, and can make Capps and Marte irrelevant if they can do enough damage early against Paul Maholm and old pal Shawn Chacon over the next two days. The only trouble is Gorzelanny, who starts tonight against Andy "Hard Luck" Pettitte. Pettitte knows the Pirates well having spend the last three years in the NL Central. Last year, he beat them in a pair of late-season quality starts. In 2005, Andy posted a 2.08 ERA in four starts against the Bucs. In 2004, he faced them in back-to-back starts early in the year and allowed just one run in 11 innings (that on a Jack Wilson home run during the hottest month of Wilson's career). Both of tonight's starters have nine quality starts in 12 tries on the season.

The Yankees and Pirates have met in interleague play just once before, that coming in 2005 when the Yankees swept the Pirates in the Bronx. If the Yanks can pull out a win tonight, they'll have put together their first four-game winning streak of the season and will stand an excellent chance of repeating that feat, thereby extending that streak to six games.

Chacon is supposed to pitch Sunday, I think. He's been kind of up and down. Was amazing a week ago. But got a ND. Was mediocre in his last start, but got the win.

I always liked him. I'm not sorry we traded him, but I liked him. I hope the fans give him a warm welcome.

9 From Rotoworld:

"Miguel Cairo is making his fourth straight start -- three of which have come at first base -- Friday against the Pirates.

The Yankees quickly got fed up with Josh Phelps' defense after Doug Mientkiewicz went down, so Cairo is filling in at the position until Johnny Damon is ready to play there. It'd be for the best if Damon picked it up soon, burying Cairo back on the bench where he belongs."

9 I know that Cairo generally sucks, but he seems to be hitting, so I'd keep playing him until he cools down. And it's the pirates.

Ugh, didn't even run the LHP's count up. Only Melky fulfilled his responsibilities.

I'm confident we'll score some, though. It's just a matter of Andy being strong and going long.

Homer Bailey, possibly the only young pitcher as heralded as Phil Hughes, gets his first start tonight in Cincy. He's kinda struggling.

Ahhhhh.

16 That's not a great name for a pitcher, huh?

2007-06-08 16:49:42
18.   monkeypants
12 Does he seem to be hitting from his 0-5 last night? Or the 4-8 the two nights before? Or the 0-7 the few days before that? Or the 6 for 29 (now 30) for the season? Naw, he just sucks. The idea that he will hold the position until another out-of-position player takes over 1B 11 does not make me feel much better.
2007-06-08 16:57:10
19.   randym77
17 LOL! That thought did cross my mind, when he gave up something three homers in one inning in spring training.

Homer isn't even his real name. It's a nickname. You'd think he'd pick something better.

OTOH, what's in a name? I thought "Kei" was a great name for a pitcher. :-P

Cairo has quietly dropped below the Mendoza line. Of course, that's still 100 points above the Nieves line.
2007-06-08 17:38:19
48.   OldYanksFan
I don't get you guys. Its not about scoring runs, it's about scoring more runs then your opponent. If Phelps is in there, and that throw gets by him, it's 2 runs. That means Phelps needs to drive in 2 runs to be where Cairo is now.

Saving runs is equal 2 scoring runs. Maybe more, and if no out is made, maybe more runs score that inning.

2007-06-08 17:39:41
49.   monkeypants
46 Yup--no other average 1B would have made those plays. That's why all other teams start a player with a lower OPS than 20 starting pitchers in the NL--they know that the ability to catch popups near the dugout is far more important for a 1B than actually hitting.
2007-06-08 17:40:19
50.   OldYanksFan
Also... Miggy has 30 ABs in 58 games. It's not easy to be good with the bat under those circumstances.

48 But a league average 1st baseman makes that play AND contributes something to the offense. Phelps may not be the answer, but Cairo definitely isn't.
2007-06-08 17:42:11
52.   OldYanksFan
49 That's the point. Phelps is nowhere near average. Miggy is NOT great at 1st... except maybe compared to Phelps.
2007-06-08 17:42:32
53.   bartap74
50 Cairo has 3000 or so career at-bats and he's never really hit, certainly not well enough to be a 1st baseman. His career OPS is south of 700. That's not a quality hitter.
2007-06-08 17:42:33
54.   monkeypants
48 Selective memory. Let's assume that Cairo saved two runs (and not only 1) on that play; and let's assume that Phelps will never ever ever make any plays at first. Is Phelps still two runs behind Cairo? What about Cairo's 0-6 today and yesterday? Doesn't his offensive ineptitude count against him? His OPS is in the .400s right now? Even if he is the greatest defensive 1B to ever play the game, at what point will it be conceded that his awful offense outweighs all the runs he supposedly saves?
2007-06-08 17:44:10
55.   bartap74

49 When I say nice, I mean because it's good to see a warm body make those plays. I'm not so sure our $100M+ first baseman makes that play on the foul pop. If you, or anyone else, is under the impression Miggy is supposed to replace a guy 1,000 times above his pay grade in all categories, I don't know what to say...

3 HRS so far tonight for Sori vs the Braves...
2007-06-08 17:54:34
61.   OldYanksFan
54 You are correct, but where the break even point depends on how bad Phelps fields, how well he hits and how well/poorly Miggy hits.

Giambi, with a .950 OPS is worth the bad D at first. But is Phelps with a .800 OPS.

I don't know where the answer is. I certainlt DON'T want Miggy as our everyday 1st baseman. My point is having him there on occasion is not horrible. He also has a big edge over Phleps on the bases.

And now he makes a Phelps play!

60 When it was discovered that Sori was actually a couple years older than everyone thought, combined with his free swinging, I thought we would see his production drop off the table. But he has proved me wrong--he is a remarkable athlete.
2007-06-08 17:57:59
64.   monkeypants
Well, Cabrera's misplay would have allowed the runner to score even from first, so I guess he sort of erased Cairo's misplay.

61 Ok, Ok, I have been riding this horse to death. I agree with you that the occasional start is not a big deal, and Cairo has shown great versatility (one of the skills that I have championed in other threads). My real concern is that he has now started 3 out of 4 at 1B, and with Minky out for six weeks, are we looking at 30 or 40 starts for Cairo? If that's the case, then I suspect his offense will begin to cost more than his defense vis-à-vis Phelps. Maybe we can agree that Cashman needs to find some solution--any solution--rather than the two options currently on the table.

I promise I'll chill out on Cairo for the rest of the night.

I know it's modern baseball and all, but I wonder if the last twenty years or so has proven that going to relievers works out more times than just using your starter for the fourth time through the line-up, like they did in the old days. I'm not talking about 150 pitches per game, or going back to 270 innings/year and 25 complete games. But it sure seems unsatisfying to turn the game over to be won or lost by the middle relief guys.

199 Absolutely. The most elegant, gratifying part of the win.

In fact, this was a great win all around. Solid defense (I know, I know, Melky and Cairo both made miscues, but still) excellent effort from Andy, Mr. Reliable, yet again, Mo being Mo, clutch hitting from Abreu and Jorgie, Melky and CAiro contributed with the sticks, and won on a squibber by Derek.

That's baseball!

God, how beautiful.

Oh, and of course, a great dinger by Matsui.

Wow, all around classic game.

And I just have to say this, in all seriousness: it was nice to see Cairo not strike out in the tenth inning. I know all he did was hit a little squibber, but as we saw there, that's infinitely better than striking out.

Put the ball in play and things can happen.

Again, Cairo is what he is and I'm not saying he's Lou Gehrig out there, but I do think there are elements of his game to be appreciated is all. I just don't think he's as lousy as most of you guys.

Anyway, the point is, that was a nice victory.

Let's say he's bad, say, 5 runs in 4 or 5. Still, the way we've been playing, it shouldn't matter. We should be able to scratch out a win.

If he's good, terrific, but in any case, tomorrow's our game.

He will be all amped up, so I wouldn't be surprised if he gets hit around a little.

239 I'm thinking it's a low-pressure start for Clemens, and deft scheduling at that. Especially since we have a few under our belt, and the starting pitching has greatly improved, he does not have to be the 'stopper' from Day One.

He's not here to win 15 games, nor take every start into the 8th inning. Quality starts, clubhouse presence, working with the young hurlers, etc., — that's the minimum I'd expect. Give him an outing or two to get going, as well. I'm thinking the offense will kick it up a notch when he's on the mound, just because.

240 I think it was Pete Abe who recently wrote that "it's been all cold beer and pizza" for Boston so far, but, yeah — HUGE difference over the last 10 days around Yankeeland, huh?

Fear 'The Ghosts of '78', New England. Fear them. We're coming... 10,9,8,7,6,5 — you know the drill...

Anyone know if there is a way to catch today's game for out of towners? It's not on Extra Innings.

Sorry I missed the Banter fun around 10:30 last night.

How about Soriano? Pinella will never convince him not to swing at first pitches, I guess. And Sori ran into the perfect pitcher for a big bomb day: Lance Cormier has now given up seven dingers in the 7.2 innings of his last two starts.
