It's been a lovely, warm spring day in New York. Mike Mussina makes his second start since returning from injury tonight against Texas. He pitched well last week against the Rangers; let's hope they haven't figured him out (though my Spidey Sense says that the Rangers offense will do just fine). Jason Giambi is out with a bad foot and Jorge Posada has the night off, what with a day game tomorrow. Bobby Abreu is hitting second. No better time than the present for Robby Cano to keep working his way back into a groove, eh?
Let's Go Yan-Kees!
0 Wow, 'house money' lineup tonight with Moose on the mound, instead of the day game before a road trip? Is this due to Giambi's foot issues or did Posada ask to start a day game?
You're absolutely right though Alex, Cano needs to keep hitting to move things along.
At the bottom of the inning, they revealed that the man in question was in the ballpark and then announced that it was Willie McCovey. Well, they were half right. The player was in fact in the ballpark, but it wasn't McCovey. It was Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti, who played in only 15 games when he won the ROY award in 1981 for the Yankees, far less than the 52 games McCovey played in 1959.
If they wanted it to be a position player, they should have said so. As it is, they flat out got it wrong.
I know it's hardly something important, but if they're going to bother with the trivia questions, they should do their research.
Otherwise, since I can't complain about Lord Mientkiewicz, let us celebrate Wil Nieves and his quest for a hit!
The cover story says Rudy Giuliani accepted Yankee World Series rings as gifts, in violation of NYC ethics laws.
In many ways it is a political hit piece but there is lots of juicy Yankee stuff in there.
Also, Allen Barra writes it is time for Torre to be sent packing.

From the Boswell article, I was really struck by this:
"And even the Red Sox have their generous moments: Mike Lowell acknowledged that the Yanks signing Clemens was essentially what Boston did with its astronomical qualifying bid to sign Daisuke Matsuzaka for more than $100 million in total expenditure."
Interesting, isn't it? The Yankees spend about $20 million ($28 million prorated) to sign the best pitcher in the National League, by a wide margin, from 2004-2006. The Sawkz spend $51 million and change just to keep a pitcher from talking to another team.
Yet somehow we're the cash-flinging goons.
Normally I wouldn't mind the mayor getting free tix to see the Yanks. But "when a buildings department deputy commissioner was indicted in 2000 for taking Mets and Rangers tickets, as well as a family trip to Florida, from a vendor, an outraged Giuliani denounced his conduct as "reprehensible," particularly "at high levels in city agencies," and said that such officials had to be "singled out" and "used as examples."
Then Rudy really should get burned for accepting $200K worth of Yankee championship rings for $16K.
Also, makes you wonder if maybe his fight for a Manhattan stadium was really a result of the largesse with which the Yanks showered him.
"$200K worth of Yankee championship rings for $16K"
Jacob the Jeweeler is facing a Money Laundering indictment for the same transactions.
Can you imagine the hysteria if Clinton or Schumer.
Torricelli had to resign for receiving suits from a lobbyist.
The guy traded Mo Vaughn, Pedro Astacio, & Burnitz all in ONE year. what an effen joke. not to mention his Yankee hate'n inferiority complex.
Especially if the opinion has a lot of facts in it. Being politically correct seems to be far more important then being honest or factual.
15 The problem with Schilling's spiel about Bonds is that it didn't contain facts. What Schilling did is called, "slander." Given Schilling's rants about the sports media getting it wrong, the least that he could do is get it right.
what facts? Bonds hasn't copped to any of those allegations. As john kruk said last nite, schilling is no position to moralize, considering, shill's teammates aren't clean.
And why did Shill bring up Bonds' color (outta da blue)? where did that come from? how was that relevant ("there's good and there's bad [everywhere]")? WTF? talk about slip of the tongue.
Oh, but manny is the crazy one.
I heard the Rangers are gonna be renamed the "Washington Generals"
Also criticized Schilling for his saying, "we don't need Clemens." "Really. So why did [the Sox] have eleven conversations [about signing Clemens] with him." etcetera. Check it out if you can.

Bonds has supporters? Who? that new to me. I don't think you can find a Bonds supporter?
What a bad human being? someone who cheats on his wife? well go down to monument park and tear down Billy Martin's & Mickey Mantle's, & Bambino's plaques.
Nice AB by Jeter. 9 pitch walk.
Well the beer just ran out. I am going to the bar to finish the game until 10.
Go Yankees.
Whoa, was that a brush-back?
why is matsui first pitch swinging?
Dang, wasted the baserunners there. I wanted a couple of runs out of that.
He really has very few redeeming qualities.
possibilities:
1. weather
2. Dice-BB game
3. Amy Winehouse concert
4. getting chores done before "Idol" & "Lost" & NBA playoffs
5. sucking (my personal fav)
I just saw that Moose is at 61 pitches. Not bad for four innings. I guess we can expect an 85-90 pitch night?
65 Phils. Against Moyers. Battle of the Ancient Lefties.
And I agree with Bobby, no instant replay in Baseball.
I wish I had a dollar for every time I threaten my mistress.
I am not a supporter. As I said, I don't think you can find a supporter (maybe Lyland). But I am also not a hata.
Bonds' first wife was white; two of his children are biracial; his long time palamour is white; he has always been close Jim Lyland , calling him a father figure; what ever Bonds is, he's not marge schott.
Jeter is hitting nearly .500 with RISP this season.
Maybe he's like Dwight Schrute, and has something else on the mind?
LOL!!! Kay is ROFL
great job by moose!
Otherwise think of it making up for the horrendous call the other night (yes, different team & different umps, but I'll take it.)
Moose at 85, if he's on a pitch count, who comes in? (after EDSP, natch.)
Oh, jeez. Oh well. It still counts!
damn Nieves!
I just think he didn't want to wait on base at all.
baby steps...
Ridiculous.
I can't wait to see Kyle Farnworth start the eighth.
Myers did go four the other night. Can't complain about him being a LOOGY tonight.
...the spring cleaning, that is
Man, toronto seems to have taken our place as "hard times AL east team." They are hurting!
No, wait. I haven't. I was thinking of Austin Powers.
Anyway, good job tonight.
- shakes head gently -
"It's in the script, dammit!"
Here's the complete list of Yankees pitchers with a WHIP below 1.30:
...
For the second night in a row, I benched all the guys who hit home runs for my fantasy team, and the guys in my starting line up have gone a combined 2-33...ouch
Well, Robbie and Melky both hit the ball very hard, anyway.
I think the O's are pretty much the least interesting team in baseball right now. At least the Pirates and Royals have some young talent, the O's have Markakis, Tejada (who really isn't so interesting anymore) and a bunch of old 1-b types...
At least he should have, it would be true to form, with the stupid questions.
A 12-12 game may have nice offense, but the score would almost certainly have as much to do with dog$#!+ pitching and D as good offense.
No sh*t. If your record is 16-16, something has to give, Sherlock, no?
Meanwhile, if I'm not mistaken, the BoSox get Halladay.
Got 'em right where I like 'em. A 'two-possession series' for the division, if you will, in May, with ESPN runnin' their mouth. They never learn...
247 Meanwhile, if I'm not mistaken, the BoSox get Halladay and ritualized media fellatio.
Fixed.
Great game today.
I have to hand it to Cashman - signing Mientkiewicz was a stroke of frickin' genius. Dougie Ballgame.

Yuck! Fan of the Yankees, yes. Fan of Baseball, yes. Fan of the United States, yes. Fan of forcing a large group of people to listen to what amounts to political propoganda and could smack of Fascism, um, no. I think George should take it down a notch for everyone's sake.
Given MLB's cozy relationship with Congress, it shouldn't surprise me that the original order was handed down. It is quite scary nonetheless, given that the larger orginazation backed such an order. I understand completely where George is coming from. I understand how strongly he feels concerning this country and it's military. He suffers from but one flaw, he still believes that the government is somehow doing the best it can to serve the people. If only George, if only.
