Baseball Toaster was unplugged on February 4, 2009.
Matt DeSalvo makes his big league debut on a crisp spring evening in the Bronx as the Bombers look to take the series from Seattle. Miguel Batista gets the nod for the M's. As usual, Pete Abe has the starting line-ups, plus the news the Kei Igawa has been demoted to the Land of Dunder-Mifflin.
Let's Go Yan-Kees!
"LET'S GO YANKEES! MATT DeSALVO, YO! .500, BABY!! WHAAAT!!!" >;)
Props to Igawa for going down - he had to agree, IIRC, because he's got a major league contract.
And, unless disaster strikes again, or DeSalvo gets bombed, looks like Camus (my nomination for DeSalvo's nickname) gets two starts, as Igawa can't come back for 10 days (barring injury). If DeSalvo does well, he could pitch May 18th vs the Mets and then again on the 23rd vs the Sox.
Of course, the Yankees wear blue. It's a very dark, navy blue, but distinctly blue. Just look at the Yankees website some time. It's quite blue.
Or is it too much of a situation where Mattingly is just a proctor for Torre.
karstens will have a pal!
Er, Scranton.
Whatever.
:)
He's the Yankee VP of Player Personnel.
I've always wondered what his handle meant myself; don't know if he ever explained it.
8 10 Way back in the day (that is, the 80s), they sold caps that were midnight blue, as opposed to navy - when the sun was shining, you could clearly tell it was blue. The rest of the time, it looked navy or black.
Yankees.com says the original pinstripes on the Highlanders' uniforms (they didn't last) were black.
IIRC, the Yanks also used a blue and orange color combo in the early 1910s.
If you saw a picture of Mark and Billy side-by-side, you couldn't confuse them. Billy is, shall we say, big.
26 ah, so he's still with us!
Say it ain't so... please tell me that you just made that one up. I don't even want to think that the Yanks used to have the same colors as... cough AUBURN cough
Wait, that looks like a very very deep red to me, not orange, yeah, it's red... that's what it is... of course, my could just be going bad again.
i have to head to work for a few hours. i'll check in toward the end of the game.
go yanks!!!
The Yankees have the greatest uniforms in history, end of story.
Let's get some baserunners.
54 see 56
I mean, they're hitting him. But I'd take seven innings, four runs tonight.
Torre has one helluva cigar. Well done, sir. Well done.
43 pitches for DeSalvo through 4 innings. Not bad, even if the K:B ratio sucks....
Chase Wright was going against Dennis Tankersley. Sooooo, possible Yankees - Brewers trade? Who would ya'll want from the Brewers for Wright?
I don't know why Balls, that are CLOSE to being strikes, are called strikes.
If only that AB hadn't eaten so many pitches.
Here's my once-a-game prayer:
Thank you, O Lord, for Jorge.
If only he could pitch.
Ohhhhhhhhh SCRABBLE!!
Hall of Fame.
There... I've said it.
A hit here by Bobby would be very nice.
Now let's break the dang game open, boys.
He has 0 K's amd his GO/AO sucks.
Where have you gone, power stroke of A-Rod?
Do you think it is too early in the season to start talking about trading Carl Pavano and one or two prospects to try to pull Johan Santana away from the Twins this year? It seems to me, if we can't get some pitching working here, we are not even going to sniff the playoffs.
-- Eric N., Charlotte, N.C.
Just win, baby.
The Frontier League doesn't want Pavano.
Jeez. So, does DeSalvo start the eighth?
If Joe were in charge, no. But maybe Guidry has mercy on his young charges?
Hall of Fame.
There... I've said it again.
I'd have trotted him out there to start the 8th. But, consider, if he gets in a bit of trouble, then the relievers have no room for error. Maybe not a bad idea to get a "fresh" arm in to start the 8th.
And Mo goes for the ninth.
That walk was stupid.
Also stupid: Proctor's going to pitch the eighth. Joe left special instructions: make sure we get maximum use out of EDSP in case his cowardly suspension prevents me from destroying his arm this week.
They usually start off:
There once was a girl from Nantucket.
Wait, is it Farns? I thought Proctor.
Also, baaaaad situation now. Come on, Farns. How about bringing in Mo here???
Wow, was he ever out
(what exactly are we doing)
But, even more so, shame on our offense
AND it comes back to bite 'em.
Fortunately, we have Doug "monster" Mankie&%stwicz next inning.
Another great start for Clippard today against the Paw-Sox...
Take that.
First K of the game, by the way. For us.
but he's making me feel like a douche.
++curls into fetal position++
I can't watch this, I'm off to do work. Now very grumpy
It sucks, but he can spend the whole season adjusting (for all I care) as long as he figures out what he can and can't do now by the playoffs.
I don't know about italics, I don't think you can do it yet. You can underline though.
Now, either Jetes or Abreu gets on so A-Rod can do his thang.
My optimism just took a dive.
Okay, Bobby, time to break out of that slump.
If Arod ends the game, does he get booed?
Or a bomb.
Come on, baseball gods.
That sucked, seriously. Damn.
WTF, we finally get some great starting pitching from a rookie not named Hughes, and we blow it.
Not only do they refuse to get a hit with RISP, but they suffer a horrendous call and Mariano has another poor outing. Coming off as a great a day as yesterday, you couldn't draw up a worse loss.
I also think it's time to move Giambi to the 3-hole and move Abreu down. He had another horrendous game and continues to hurt the team.
A thin silver lining: DeSalvo was awesome tonight. Too bad it was wasted by the effin' ump and the small army of people they left on base.
Damn damn damn. VG start wasted. Cruddy call. Rivera dinger. Disappointing.
We'll have to beat them senseless in Seattle next week. See youse.
Wang, Moose, Pettite, Rasner, DeSalvo until Clemens comes in...?
Wang Pettite Mussina DeSalvo Rasner, no?

And how would folks grade Mattingly's coaching debut?
I'm concerned that Minky batted in the 9th. What was Mattingly thinking?
350 Perfect, Abreu is lost lost lost out there. Looks horrible.
What a f-----g upsetting game. How to sleep tonight?
Blown call. Bad luck.
Mo meltdown.
But our offense HAS to do better.
355 DS was excellent, despite no Ks. Mattingly's debut was OK until he let Minky bat in the 9th.
And I think the reasoning behin letting Mink bat were his 2 doubles in 3 AB, plus he's a contact guy against a strikeout pitcher, and Phelps is a strikeout hitter. I'm sure the lefty-righty idea came into play, as well, even though we all know Phelps is a better hitter against both. Still, Mink earned his place in the 9th, and given his game performance it was a toss up.
And Tabata was 3-4 and raised his AVG to .294.
I hope the team can bounce back tomorrow. And I agree, it's time to move Bobby down in the lineup so A-Rod has somebody to drive in.
