The Deuce

by Alex Belth

The Yanks won a close one in the opener, 4-3. Pettitte wasn't great but was certainly dogged. Giambi hit a bullet solo homer, though he made a bad running mistake late in the game. Farnsworth ended the eighth with a nasty slider; Mo was his old self in ninth. One thing that jumped out at me watching the post-game. They showed a slow-mo replay of the Yankee congrats-line at the end of the game. They followed Rivera along, dutifully giving dabs to each teammate, Jeter went by, some other guys, and then A Rod walked by and was very amped. He slapped Mo's hands with authority. Mo got really amped up about it, it was cool to see. A Rod getting Mo juiced.

A very nice win for the Yanks. Now, the bats need to give Moose a whole lotta love in the night-cap. It's poured since the end of Game One and jeez, the last thing Moose's fincky ass needs is a wet field to come back to, but what can you do about it? Here's to the Yanks getting the led out.

Given the nice DP Giambi turned, couldn't Tea throw him out there again for the nightcap? Drop Jorge in at DH, and then just Nieves is the blackhole in the lineup.

Now giving up 6-8 outs just seems unfair to Moose. Welcome back!

Was posting in the other thread until I noticed this one. When the heck was the last time Phelps played? Torre is just brutal with a bench in keeping them fresh.

I agree, Sterling is an idiot. He destroyed the HR call, then couldn't figure out what was going on with the Abreu at bat b/c he was too busy talking, then gets so excited with the throw home and hit that he can't catch his breath in time...what a blunderbuss

Did Bowa send Abreu? It seems like last year he didn't get anyone caught. Is that two in one day?

Jose Guillen's play was great. Waiting for the grounder then stepping in front of Lugo and letting the ball roll between his legs. Lugo then has to rush the throw and air mails one allowing Sexson to score.

I'm pretty pissed with this Phelps benching. What did the kid do to deserve this? All he did was hit. I guess that needs to be punished in Torreland if you're under a certain age.

37 Yes. Didn't matter thanks to Moose.

34 Ditto what claybeez said in 36. Classic Moose.

Best part is, only 28 pitches through 2. If he keeps that up, he might get through 6, even with the 80 pitch count.

Of course YES shows a good looking chick taking a picture of Jeter.

46 None taken!

Ugh. Sosa disgusts me. Bonds get reamed by so many, yet here's "Slammin' Sammy", back to pad his HRs over 600, playing 81 home games in the best hitters' park in the AL. He can't hit for average, can't run, doesn't walk, can't play the field well. All he can do is hit homers. .244/.309/.547.

Maybe that's helpful but you wonder if the power goes for a little while, does Sammy still get to play?

OT: Given the photo today on Boston Dirtdogs of Tom Brady in a Yankee hat I thought I remembered a news report from just after the Super Bowl where A-Rod said he and Brady were close friends. Does anyone remember this? In my memory, someone asked A-Rod is he was happy that Peyton had the monkey off his back. A-Rod replied that he was, but he wished that the Patriots had won because he is so close with Brady. A Red Sox/Pats fan buddy of mine doesn't believe it so I am trying to find the link. Anyone else remember this or am I making it up?

86 It crapped out for a second before it stayed on Jeter, so I think they're having problems.

74 That was what I suggested earlier, too. Mike's legs need the rest, and Andy has shown the last two times out (and his first start way back when) that he doesn't do well with rainouts and extra days off. Moose doesn't either, but the lesser of two evils.

I think Joe took out Moose reasonably; he looked winded the last inning.

85 April 7, 2007 (vs Orioles): Flied out twice against Steve Traschel, then reached on an E6 (throwing error), flied out against Danys Baez and walked against Chris Ray (right before the walk off Grand Slam).

It would be very interesting to see if the E6 was a questionable error call, and if it were a bang bang play at first, we could have a controversy on our hands ;-)

Either way, Jeter has been on base in every game this season.

Oh, wait, you mean the lefty you brought in didn't get the lefty out? So now you let him pitch to a righty? Couldn't you have just let Bruney pitch? He does throw 97mph and had 2 outs already.

I came across this link the other day:

http://www.livescience.com/othernews/050505_clutch_hitters.html

It's about a study from 2005 that claims there are such things as clutch hitters...if you include sac flies.

Among them: Bill Buckner.

129 64 according to Yahoo. Others said 65.

131 Amazingly, no. I'm sure he threw a long bullpen session though.

107 Following up, Jeter was 0 for 4 in the second game of the second doubleheader against the Red Sox on September 17, 2006. Ken Jarvis retired him thrice and Craig Hansen once.

Before that, Jeter's previous hitless game was August 17, also against Boston.

So, as someone wrote (don't remember the blog), pitchers as esteemed as Kevin Jarvis and Steve Traschel are the difference between a statistical anomaly and an assault on a record many believe to be unbreakable.

130 I'm not really sure why Henn shouldn't be allowed to pitch to a righty?

I realize that Mussina shouldn't have been pulled (unless he said something that we don't know about yet), but I can't really blame Torre for pulling Bruney after throwing a 95 mph fastball against Sammy Sosa's head...shit like that has a way of sticking with you for a minute.

And obviously Henn should pitch to the righty as he just happens to be a left handed pitcher not a LOOGY.

140 I wasn't saying that, I was just saying that playing handedness when you have a good pitcher like Bruney in is stupid. Once Henn was in, yes he should pitch to righties, but Bruney should also pitch to the lefty in the first place and then you can use Henn later on.
2007-05-03 19:41:36
145.   Zack
I don't have a problem with Henn pitching to righties at all, in fact, I encourage it, but pulling Bruney was silly, and letting him pitch after that would be better for the psyche than sitting and brooding on it methinks. But its the burning through the BP that drives me crazy. Now, a new pitcher will come up for next inning, which totally wastes Henn

I was out for the first game, so does anyone know why the bleep Joe brought in Vizcaino?

Why not use Posada for Mientkiewicz and then Josh Phelps? Or squeeze? Or use any strategy? Does Joe remember what it means to manage a game?

162 Vizcaino, the worst reliever on the Yanks, is one of Torre's guys. He gave up a HR to someone who hadn't hit a home run in 367 at bats.

107 Following up again... I had nothing better to do so I went back and checked the April 7 condensed game on mlb.tv. Tejada threw the ball in the dirt and would have beaten Jeter by a couple steps, so it was a legit error. However, Jeter missed a home run by a couple feet in his previous at bat, flying out deep to right center. Again, the difference between nerdy intrigue and The Streak...

179 Gonzalez was probably just afraid some of the flying dust from the runner crossing the plate would blow on him and put him on the DL for the rest of the year. Do him and Pavano have the same agents?

181 was supposed to refer to 177

2007-05-03 20:00:39
188.   Max Nomad
169 Not necessarily the difference. I remember during Jete's 25 game streak last year he was 0-3 and was facing a 3-0 count when he swung at a bad pitch, presumably to try to extend the streak and not walk. Why would do I presume that? Because he hadn't swung at a 3-0 in 4 years or so.

Funny thing is, the next day he swung at his very next 3-0 and homered.

179 I think that was the year it looked like Juan Gone had a shot at the single season RBI record. That was the same season that he called up the official scorer and berated him for issuing an error that resulted in Gonzalez losing an RBI.

In other news, the brutal mismanagement of the bullpen continues.

188 You are right, in his career Jeter has faced a 3-0 count about 350 times. Number of times he's swung: 29. Ten of them were in 2001, and he's only had two since 2003.

However, just for fun I looked up some other players: Juan Pierre has faced about 150 3-0 counts in his career (since 2000). Number of swings: one.

Vladamir Guererro has faced 410 career 3-0 counts, and has swung 66 times.

194 Leaving in Henn in the first place, to face a righty last innning, goes against your push button theory.

199 Nah, it totally fits. The push button system works in that Torre lets a pitcher go until some random moment, usually a walk or something, when Torre suddenly decides he must push the button again, because its so pretty and fun to push, which triggers the revolving door in the BP to open again..

I think the Yankees got very lucky there. I am agree 100% with Girardi...Young was really getting to the outside pitch, yet Posada didn't call for one inside fastball.

Every game Girardi does in the booth he says things that really impress me. It's almost like he's on a job interview and he's passing with flying colors. I really wish he was done on the bench instead of the booth.

222 Yeah, Girardi always seems to b making relevant points. Though I did not agree with his assessment earlier that the McCarthy/Danks trade was a bust for both teams. 261 Rivera keeps it the way it is in the eighth against the best hitters. I think anyone in the bullpen can keep a 3 run lead against weaker hitters in the ninth. But, it's "tradition," and saves mean everything.

I hope the Yanks rally in the eighth so that Rivera doesn't pitch tonight.

300 So that's why Tino batted like a .180 in the 96 playoffs? I'm just kidding, but seriously, the guy was one strike call away from being a choker, and now because the ump blew that call and he hit a grannie on the next pitch, he's "clutch."

297 I would say there's something psychological about getting those last three outs. Just like Sean Henn says there's something psychological about starting vs. reliever so is there about getting outs in the 8th against outs in the 9th. But I do think anyone in the pen could get three outs in the 9th against the bottom of the Ranger order with a three-run lead.

I wouldn't necessarily want someone other than Rivera pitching in a Yankees/Red Sox game, but tonight, use Rivera in the high leverage situation.

In retrospect, I don't think Mo had any real problem. I can't tell when his stuff looks good (all MLB pitchers look totally unhittable to me, maybe because I used to play ball and I know I couldn't hit those guys in a hundred at-bats). But the bloop single, the broken bat, the K, those were all "Good Mo" signs. The liner, as I said, could be the product of a 3-ball count in a situation where a walk is as bad as a dinger.

yankz - I meant Farns is going to give up his share of HRs so he should avoid walks as much as possible. He's not El Duque or Moose who will put a guy on from time to time to get a better matchup. As bad as the back-to-back-to-back-to-back Chase Wright stretch was - it's the same as 3 BBs and a tater. At least the kid was throwing strikes.

The average age of the Scanton/Wilkes Barre Yankees roster is older than the Florida Marlins roster - 26.7 to 26.5. I think the Yankees do themselves a disservice by keeping so many 28 year-old+ minor leaguers. 355 With stiffs? Why not fill you A-ball team with 17-18 year old free agents and bump everybody up a level? Other than Bronson Sardinha, Alberto Gonzales and Eric Duncan there isn't a single position player that the Yankees think has a future as an everyday player at Scanton. The Yankees could trade for a backup IF or OF any day of the week for future considerations and some cash. Why stockpile these players (Basak, Cannizaro, Phillips, Reese, Thompson) when they are so easy to acquire in the market?

Offered without comment:

NoMass.org writes:

The longer Joe Torre is kept around, the more damage he is doing to this pitching staff. He is a truly horrible manager. He needs to be removed immediately as he is jeopardizing the health and effectiveness of the bullpen.

Who in their right mind removes Mike Mussina after allowing 1 run through 5 innings on 64 pitches?!?!? 64 pitches!

LoHud writes:

Mike Mussina said he was gassed after five innings and asked out of the game. "I was happy five innings was what I was able to do," he said. "It was a good day considering I had been off for a while."

This is why, folks, you need to wait and hear what the players say before you jump all over the manager. At least on some occasions.

As Mussina said, throwing a 60-pitch simulated game in the batting cage did not prepare him to go seven innings in a real game.

---

362 Good call. If the Yanks signed DK to the same deal ("posting fee" and contract), with his current results he'd be a cut above Pavano in the minds of these hacks who "report" on MLB, strictly because it was the Yankees who signed him. The loveable Sox get a pass. Same as it ever was.

364 366 Not me. If Moose asked out because he was done, no complaints here. I think I even said it in a post above - if Torre had a good reason for taking Moose out, no big deal.

Its hard not to get upset during the game though, knowing the pen is still being toasted and wondering why Moose is out after 64 pitches. Vicious cycle.
