Looking For Signs of Life

by Alex Belth

It is an overcast, brisk spring day in New York. The sun is trying to peak out. Kei Igawa is on the hill for the Yanks this afternoon. Time for the bats to bomb away.

Yankee defense: awful

After three games:
Red Sox fans: Hopeful.
Yankee fans: Disgusted.

Once again, ya gotta love ESPN for their thoughtful, BALANCED coverage. From their website:
"Inept Mussina mauled as O's smash Yanks"
"Mussina mauled as Orioles turn fortunes against Yanks"
Inept? Mauled? Did anyone set Contraras the other day? He just 'Lost'.

And for the best news:
"Mike Mussina lasted only four innings against Baltimore, which makes 2007 the first time in Yankees history that their starting pitcher failed to throw at least five innings in each of the team's first three games of a season"

Sorry to Beat a Dead Horse Dept:
For a little reality check on the Captain's defensive abilities, I would refer you to:

1) http://www.nyyfans.com/article/8616/
2) "Time For Jeter To Follow A-Rod & Nomar - And Move Off Short" from WasWatching.

Even another GG can't make this stuff go away.

4 In Jeter's defense (no pun intended), I don't think what we've seen over the past three games has been an accurate picture of his defensive abilities. Even fielders can slump, and I think that's what's going on here. He may still be in inferior fielder at his best, but mental mistakes and poor throws have never been an issue with him, though they've been so thus far this week.
2007-04-07 09:56:32
6.   seamus
4 like Cliff says, jeter's play this week is a different issue entirely from the debate over his general defensive abilities. He just looks off compared to how he usually plays shortstop.
2007-04-07 09:58:54
7.   OldYanksFan
7 Agreed. This week he has been horrible. Normally, he is just bad (....ground ball.... juuuust past the outstretched glove of Jeter).

ahhhhhh.... it's Saturday. Fox's first televised game of the day is at 4:00. That's why the Yankees game at 1:00 is blacked out from MLB.TV

That makes sense, right?

I love how the Orioles announcers make it seem like the Yanks and O's are these HUGE rivals. That idiot Buck Martinez also pointed out that the Birds surely have the Yanks' attention after last night's game. Give me a freaking break.

Dear God... Yanks-O's, Igawa versus STEVE TRACHSEL?! The length of this game is going to set all kinds of records...

A lot of guys share the Human Rain Delay nickname, but nobody earned it like Trachs. I've always suspected that the new rule limiting time between pitches was designed specifically with him in mind.

Curveball low for a ball to Melvin Mora. 1-0.

Looked like a changeup away, which Mora pops foul. 1-1.

Curveball blooped to right for a 3 run double. Doug Out couldn't reach it. Jeter drops Abreu's throw, allowing Roberts to score and Mora to tag.

5-2 Os. 2 out. Guidry is out there.

Miguel Tejada up with two on and two out.

Quest over to first. Markakis safe.

High fastball for a ball. Igawa's control seems to be pretty bad; he better get better and soon.

Fastball inside for a ball.

Tejada flies out to right and slams his bat in disgust.

Finally out of the inning. That was a disaster.

Strike with the fastball to Posada. 0-1.

Posada grounds an offspeed pitch to the firstbase side, way foul. 0-2.

Looked like a changeup or bad curveball away for a ball.

Fastball high, ball. 2-2.

Fastball on the inside corner, and the ump makes a big show of calling him out. Total bullshit; that was a ball.

That is a good question, why isn't Hughes already up? Don't the Devel Rays have more than 6 guys on their roster younger or the dsame age as Hughes? Treat him like a fragile egg, and he will perform like a fragile egg.

2 out, Gomez up.

Quest over to first, Patterson back standing up.

Quest bounces a fastball low, and Posada blocks it. 1-0.

Igawa goes over to first with a different move, Pattersonb back standing up.

Quest AGAIN to first, Patterson back.

Offspeed pitch down and in, low for a ball.

Quest to first, Patterson back. Buck smugly claims he can sense Igawa going to the base.

Fastball for another ball. 2-0 to Roberts.

BTW, you asked about former Bama quarterback Brodie Croyle earlier. He might get his shot this year at Kansas City. Let's just hope he does more with that shot than Andy did last year with the Yanks.

Croyle, that's right. I happen to think he is going to a solid to excellent NFL quarterback. I know there wasn't that much hype arond him given the others that came out that year, but I watched him closely, and think he has the tools to succeed in the NFL. College is not the same, and he has the skills you need in the NFL. But what do I know, there are people out there who still think Eli Manning and Matt Lienart are QB's. Go figure. I am really curious to see if theRaiders take Russell, as they should, or blow it again and take a clown like Quinn.

202 Fair enough, but that is pretty inflexible roster-wise. At least in Boston Youkillis can sorta play 3B. The Yankees are trying to cut things too fine: a 12 man staff b/c they have Meyers, a full-time DH, two 1B (one apparently for defense?), a no-hit super sub, and and a no-hit back-up C. Thus, if just about anything goes wrong, the team is hamstrung (no pun intended).

207 I absolutely agree. But:
1) This is Giambi, circa 2007. What do you do, dump him?
2) While Cairo is not good, this is why we need him.
3) How many innings did Myers pitch last year? And how effective was he against lefties anyway? With all our young power arms, I say dump Myers and get a real player for our bench.

The other question is how bad is Phelps at first? I think if he plays everyday, he hits. But I don't know if he is a liability in the field. (and God knows we can ill afford another liability in the field).

I personally play Phelps everyday so we can at least know if we need Minky, or can dump him in a month and beef up our bench.

Anyway, Mats is on the DL and KT is probably coming up.

206 Quinn will be a much better pro than Russell. Russell looked good because he faced the handicap Quinn had to make up for all year - one of the worst secondaries in college football. Russell has talent, but was inconsistent against medicore defenses and will struggle in the NFL. The lovefest for Russell reminds me of a few other QBs who were a bit overblown coming into the NFL because of "arm strength" and showed nothing in the NFL, including one who got picked too high because he threw the ball through the goal posts at the combine.

"1) This is Giambi, circa 2007. What do you do, dump him?"

No, keep Giambi and ONE 1b, whoever hits better, regardless of which side of the plate or defense.

"2) While Cairo is not good, this is why we need him."

No, this is why we don't need him. Torre will always go to Cairo first, no matter what options there may or may not be. Rather, this is why we need another OF on the bench, whether he comes by way of one 1b or DL one of the injured OFs.

"3) How many innings did Myers pitch last year? And how effective was he against lefties anyway? With all our young power arms, I say dump Myers and get a real player for our bench."

Once Russell gets his footwork straight, he will be outstanding. Quinn is just one more overhyped ND player who didn't beat a single top 10 oponnent his entire tenure at ND. He certainly has had no good perfornances against big time ranked programs since Weiss has been there. If they weren't ND, they wouldn't even have played in a bowl game last year, and you saw what happened to them in the bowl they did play in. Is this where I begin talking about how bad Petrino is going to be in Atlanta?

Just kidding. Sorry if the football talk bothered Old Yankee Fan. Durning a game like this, when there isn't much to really say, it provides a pleasant diversion from us getting out butts beat.

229 Good one.
Ok. Horrible game. Not much to talk about. Suggestions:
1) Trashing ARod. Those socks. Really.
2) What supermodel Jetes takes his frustration out on tonight
3) Office Pool: When does Minky hit his first ball out of the infield
4) How many millions on Rogers contract have these first 4 games cost us.
5) Office Pool: Bernies next call to Joe
6) ARod. Those Sox.
7) Could it be Gia Allemand
8) Office Pool: Brian Bruney's next day off
9) When questioned about his defense, when does Jeter next say "I got no problem with ARod"

From that same article on THE AROD GRAND SLAM.

"New York paid $26 million for Igawa's rights and signed him to a $20 million, five-year deal, just after the Red Sox bid $51 million for Matsuzaka and agreed to a $52 million, six-year contract. While Matsuzaka is viewed as an ace, Igawa is a back-end of the rotation pitcher.

While Dice-K throws 95 mph and has a commanding array of pitches, Igawa topped out at 91 mph and usually was around 89."

Is ESPN owned by the freakin' Red Sox?

to be fair, the recap on espn is from the AP. and they don't call it "conventional wisdom" for nothing. to break free of convention you have to have a spark of intelligence, something that few sportswriters possess it seems.

"The Red Sox paid a truckload of money for a potential ace, and the Yankees paid 40% of that for a solid lefthander."

Fixed.

It's not ESPN that wrote about how much A-Rod fails, it's the Associated Press. This time, anyway. We'll see what the Olneys and Neyers and Starks, and Boston-blowing Gammonses have to say soon....

366 Oh yeah; I forgot to add: "While the Red Sox traded two of their top prospects for an overrated former DL-partner of Carl Pavano, the Yankees have Phil Hughes waiting in the wings."

367 I will hear no wrong where Gammons is concerned. Can't wait for HatGuy, Chass and the Curly-Haired Boyfriend, though.

Why are you guys reading the bullsh1t on ESPN when there are wonderful blogs writing infinitely better stuff?

Don't get me wrong, I love reading Gammons. I think he's really insightful and a great writer. But he DOES have a bias for the Sawks and sometimes it shows.

So ESPN... THE Leader in Sports... has to quote word for work what the monkeys at AP write? Very professional. Wouldn't want to inconvenience them and have a decent professional sports writer write there stuff.

Its OK. Not even ESPN can cold my mello.
Anybody know what time BBTN is on?

370 That is the truth! ESPN and their ilk have a limited lifespan, thanks to great sites, of which this is one of the best.

What a difference one swing makes in my day and my evening.

I only watch ESPN for games, on mute, and I never visit their website now that I've learned MLB.com has projected pitching matchups days in advance as well.

And while I'm at it: Tim McCarver is coloring the Mets/Braves game, and in true fashion, keeps calling Matt Diaz "Mike."

The Giants should just have a big blue recycle bin outside their stadium where ball clubs can just come and place there old washed up players in. It would save the Giants time in actually going out and signing them.

The YES site has the same crappy, RedSox poluted AP article on their site, The YES site! I mean, can't they write their own stuff? Is the Sports industry really this lazy? This is insulting to us fans.

All I can say is, as my only game of the year, back in NY just for the weekend, what a great game to go to! I have seen them lsoe the last two years, and going into the 9th, I was ready for it to be another crappy game. And even when A-Rod was up, with 2 strikes, I was feeling the doom. He swings, I can't see the ball until I see Patterson going back, and then everyone just goes nuts! Man was that a great 9th inning!!!!
