Cool Breeze?

by Alex Belth

Randy Johnson has not struck out a batter in either of his last two starts. Go figure that. Dude is third on the all-time strikeout list and yet he just hasn't been able to get hitters to swing and miss of late. Johnson has practically become a hold-your-breath-and-pray pitcher, a far cry from his former self. It would be huge for the Bombers if he can come through with a strong performance tonight. But I figure that we could be in for some real offensive fireworks. The White Sox and Yankees have played some tense games this year. No reason to believe tonight will be any different.

Let's Go Yan-Kees!

If we make it to the postseason I am terrified of RJ in a short series, especially a 3 game one. He could kill us. At this point, I'd almost prefer Wright to start, give us 5 or 6 decent innings and then go to a Randy infused BP. At least then you know what you are getting. The other alternative is to use Wright as your long man and give RJ a very short leash.

As for tonight, to quote Han Solo: I have a bad feeling about this.

I'm about 1 bad start away from being ready to get Sturtze back. At least when Sturtze was in the game we knew we were going to lose.

I think the Unit's going to step up big tonight. Someone's gotta do it.

And here's the lineup...

Damon
Jeter
Abreu
A-Rod
Posada
Cano
Bernie
Wilson
Melky

I've stop holding my breathe when RJ pitches in fear of dropping dead. I no longer expect much from him so I'm not disappointed just pissed off.

Randy Johnson is almost the baseball equivalent of Brett Favre right now. Hopefully he retires at the end of this season.

I read somewhere someone was talking about moving the Unit to the bullpen for the playoffs. I think that's a good idea. You go with Moose, Wang, Wright, and Lidle. (Pavano? :=: )

I think Damon's tired. Usually he runs hard no matter what, but he was kind of dogging it there. Either thought it was a homer or thought it would be caught.

Probably coulda had an inside the park homerun if he'd really hustled. ;-)

Though Damon wasn't running very hard, and he usually does. I remember that game when the Yanks were up 10 runs in the 8th inning, and Damon ran like hell on what looked like an easy popup. It was dropped, he there he was on 2B. On what looked like a sure out.

Either way, that DP sucked balls.

This is the 2nd night in a row we have one of these bad ChiSox pitchers on the ropes in the 1st inning and let him get out of it with 1 Run and a DP.

When you K 78 times in 255 AB's this year, I guess I would be swinging at the 1st strike too. Forget this nonsense. This is not Yankee ball.

57 We should've won yesterday like 10-5. Murderers' Row and we still can't score or get a hit w/RISP. All the OBP shit is doing is putting more runners on to create more DPs and weak pop-ups.

We've got plenty of backup corner OFers. Just no one who's really a CFer. Except maybe Melky, and Joe won't move him, as his repeatedly starting Bernie in CF shows.

Anyone else irritated by hearing Buck Martinez talk about adding players and payroll constraints, that all the other AL East teams have to keep up by developing their own players? And the crack about A-Rod's salary and no one else being able to take on that contract?

125 Honestly, I think it's Torre being overly cautious - he knows he's got a team full of older guys - when someone gets hurt the least little bit, they come out. No playing hurt and making things worse on yourself..

KDW, I said the same thing to myself, it's because he managed the Blue Jays, he's making excuses for himself. He is a bad manager so he goes on and on about how the other AL East teams are disadvantaged. Uh buck smoke another bone.

136 The rest of the league and the 4 letter network have been passing that script around for 10 years now. Buck probably doesn't even realize that Hicks is still paying a good chunk of A-Rods salary. They're lightweights, all of 'em...

The thing is, he's there because he's good at keeping things calm amidst the Bronx Zoo environment that is Yankeeland.

Whatever. Give me Tom Kelly...;)

I agree to a point with all the Torre questionable BP moves(he's had that problem since day 1 IMO, Nelson, Stanton and Mo hid that for a while) but I absolutely agree with Mike on the calming influence he has. I think that is HUGE, especially with all the trade crap every year, etc. Imagine a new guy trying to deal with a sheff situation, he would be a shrinking violet, I think. I think Joe's pros outweigh his cons. God bless the new manager because he is going to get killed.

Farnsworth's fatal flaw is his 100 mph fastball. He never learned to control his pitches, so he ends up throwing 35 pitches to 6 hitters. Maybe he gets 3 strikeouts, but at what cost?

When he misses he puts guys on base and other teams score multiple runs.

Not a good formula for a late-inning reliever. Mad Dog Chris Russo is often wrong, and always annoying, but he's right about Farnsworth being a tough guy to count on in a big spot.

410 It was a bit tough to tell from the ESPN shot, but the ball hung up for a pretty good amount of time and Bernie took an awful route to the ball. When Bernie was a decent CFer he always got bad jumps and took poor routes but he was so fast he could make up for it. Now that he is also slow he covers almost no ground in CF. Looking back over comments, the second the move was made (score 7-2) a bunch of people called it out as a dumb move and it might hurt us down the line. It did.
2006-08-09 20:48:21

Mo is on the mound and a man on 1st with 2 outs, ask any player what they do and they'll tell u the same thing, stay in front of the ball. Bernie played it the same way everybody would unless u are elasticman. Tagadouche had a full swing and broke his bat, Bubba??? he was getting bad reads off the bat not but 2 weeks ago and the last time i saw Melky in CF was when Trot had an ITPHR as he carried his bad leg around the bases.

Actually smarter that Bernie made sure it didn't get past him, otherwise the game is tied right now.

But that still doesn't excuse him from not actually getting to the ball to possibly catch it on the fly...

BTW, Ortiz is 0-4. Think ESPN will lead with:

(a) Yankees keep pace with surging Sox. Papi spurs team on with charismatic laughter.

(b) Sox stay afloat despite struggling Ortiz. Steve Phillips suggests it might be time to test the waiver waters for the slumping slugger.

425 Yikes. 6 kb is pretty small. Dunno if a fly out will fit in that limit. A strikeout would be easier. I'll see what I can do.

Damon doesn't know if he'll be able to play tomorrow. He says he's "hobbling around."

We really need to do something about CF, because Damon is always walking wounded by the end of the season.

That's from memory, but he definitely said "it was a catchable fly ball." Hopefully they keep on struggling when we roll into town in a week or so.

Lets be up by 5 or more games by the time the Sox get into town. The Twins now lead in the wildcard. And Papi was 0-4, too bad he couldn't stad pad when the Sux had the lead, huh?

That was completely surreal. Papelbon gives up the leadoff triple, gets battled by Gaithright before blowing him away with a tough pitch, then seems to have DeJesus on the ropes before giving up a very shallow sac fly.

After the sac fly, Papelbon completely comes unraveled and gives up a smoked double over Manny's head to Grudzielanek, then Sweeney immediately whacks a single that Manny charges well but can't get out of his glove.

About as crappy a loss as the Red Sox could possibly suffer.

I think the Red Sox have to consider DFA'ing or at least benching Javy Lopez. He can't field worth a damn (2 wild pitches, 1 passed ball, 2 steals tonight), isn't hitting, and can't handle that pitching staff. He calls for way, way too many fastballs, especially from Papelbon.

As I heard it, Joe was unclear about the "catchable" fly ball in the ninth. I just listened to Torre's post-game interview on the YES web site. He said the ball Bernie played on a hop was "catchable," but then he said the Yankees were playing in defense to protect against doubles, so the outfielders were deep. That sounded like he was excusing Bernie's failure to get to the ball. I am uncertain whether Joe was implying that some other center fielder would have caught the ball.
