Baseball Toaster Bronx Banter
Help
Wright Away
2006-07-26 14:03
by Alex Belth

Jaret Wright is on the hill tonight as the Yanks go for the sweep in Texas. Since you never know what you are going to get with Wright, it would behoove the Yankee offense to break open a can o whup ass against the Rangers' rookie southpaw, John Rheinecker.

Love to see a big night from Alex Rodriguez. Giambi too, provided that he's in the line-up. Giambi has slumped considerably in July with little to no fanfare. Hopefully, Damon will play and help get the ball a-rollin. And perhaps, a little bit of comic relief from Sal Fasano.

Let's Go Yan-Kees.

Looking for Goldman's latest and found this???

http://www.yesnetwork.com/

Scott Erickson is getting DFA'd.

At first I thought they were talking about Proctor.

1 I like that lineup, given that the Yanks are facing a rookie lefty (URP alert!) but I hope Wright can go at least 5 full innings. Then I'd like to see a Beam/Villone combo for ~ 2 innings each, with Myers sprinkled in where appropriate. Give the big 3 a rest, and keep Chacon as far away from things as possible.

2 Uh, didn't that happen in May?

Melky Cabrera in the 7 hole is a huge waste. I wrote about this the other day: I would love to see Cabrera lead off with Damon and Jeter behind him. I think a lineup like that could offer more protection to Alex.

oakland won over boston. we could really use a win tonight or we fall to 3rd in wild card and miss an opportunity to gain on boston!

Miguel Cairo is the anti-Cano.

His batting stats aren't that great, but he hits very well with runners on. While Robby hits really well, but not with RISP.

(None on / RISP)

Cano .371 / .227
Cairo .180 / .341

It would be nice to for once capitalize on the Sawx losing. If we win tonight, we're within 1.5 games of the Sawx and in 1st in the Wild Card.

I think Yes Network's site is screwed up at the moment. It's woefully outdated, e.g., "The All-Star Break is a month away."

9 huh? I just went there and it said something about Fasano as the headline and ad a sub-story on ARod in Texas.

The "top play" from the Yankees video highlights at MLB.com is "A-Rod on the kiss cam":

Don't ask me.

Don't ask me why I went ahead and decided to read what I knew was going to be a useless editorial from a notorious Yankee hater/Sawx fan that would only serve to irritate me.

Don't ask me why I am giving it further notoriety by pasting the link here.

Warning: it contains more nonsense about A-rod. If you're smart, you'll skip over it and spend 2 minutes doing something else more productive (really, I mean it). The part that really got under my skin was the Jeter comparison toward the very end. I won't touch that comment except to say that, of the 2 players, A-rod is not the one having the MVP-caliber season.

Remember we were joking about Giambi's performance swing? Amazing April, Slumping May, Excellent June...well, July fits the pattern, Oy.

11 If only the top 3 of our lineup would join the club today, now, that's gonna be a fun game.

2006-07-26 16:25:51
15.   singledd
5 ABSOLUTELY. I was for Damon/Melky, but Melky's stats certainly point to Melky/Damon. My feeling is get him 1 or 2 so that: (1) we have the heart of our lineup behind his decent OBP and (2) it makes the bottom of our lineup less pathetic.

Unfortunately, Torre is bad at shuffling the lineup. He likes certain guys in certain spots, and doesn't like to deviate.

2006-07-26 16:46:39
16.   randym77
I dunno...don't the stat-heads say batting order doesn't matter that much?

If that's the case, Joe may be right in not messing too much. If players are comfortable where they are, that might be reason enough to leave them there.

2006-07-26 16:46:57
17.   Ron Burgundy
Why doesn't Joe just swap A-Rod and Giambi in the line-up? Giambi's OBP has been falling like a rock lately anyways. Just put A-Rod at #3, where he hit with Texas and see what happens.
2006-07-26 16:48:26
18.   Ron Burgundy
16 True, there was a study that showed that "protection" in the batting order was just a made up thing and that it was completely random, with no patterns. But hell, still might be worth a shot to just switch Giambi and A-Rod.
2006-07-26 16:56:22

Presently, the Yankees have the checkerboard jersey emblematic of the wild card leader. They need to win to hold on to it.

Man, the Fasano pics really run the gamut. The one they are showing on YES shows him completely clean-shaven, with very short hair. Must be from his minor league days.

The one on Gameday looks like his Phillies pic, Photoshopped to add a Yankees cap.

In reality, he's somewhere in between. Cut his hair and shaved the beard, but still has a mustache.

I feel very good about this team being in the thick of the division race and WC and being 18 games over .500 given everything...but it really ticks me off that we have a high probability of losing 2 out of every 5 games (and losing them badly and ungracefully) with Wright and Ponson.

131 The thing that REALLY angers me is that: ChiSox lose, Red Sawx lose, we can be within 1.5 of the AL East and take a 0.5 game lead in the AL Wild Card. But instead, as always with a chance to have an impact, we're losing and might stay 2.5 games back in the AL East and be 0.5 games back in the AL Wild Card. We NEED this win to finish the sweep, and to gain ground.

I've muted ESPN while they go on another A-Rant. What ticks me off the most is that the Yankees haven't played in New York in 10 days... and yet they talk about all the booing in the Bronx? Watching the last game against the White Sox, it sounded like there were a lot more cheers than boos.

What a convienent time for ESPN to construct a controversy. Oh well, I should be used to it as a Duke fan, nothing sells better than Yankees and Duke hating.

137 we do have torealise the chance to get closer the red sox stems from their sucky 4/5 starters..

I find rooting for this lineup to score runs is depressing. After seeing an outfield of Melky, Bubba and Guiel, I thought Yankee fans would storm Steinbrenner's house and hold give hostage until we got an impact OF bat.

God knows what's happening with Cano (who while having a good average has not been a run producer) and Damon, who seems to be always on injury-thin ace.

The ChiSox just lost 10 of 12, so we are in the WC race. However, Minn has won 34 of 42 (unbelievable!) and will bury us soon.

So we can
1) get an impact bat
2) hope Boston plays sub .550 ball
3) make other plans for October

You know, even though this doesn't have anything to do with anything, Sterling was just doing the promo for cap night and I thought at first he said CAT night. You know, like ballparks have one day and section where you can bring your dog, only they decided to do it with cats. I was a little stunned, and thinking that would be chaos worthy of the Disco Riot before I realized - a little bummed - what he was actually talking about.

Now THAT would be a ballgame.

I'm sorry, the recent internet rant I read about Sterling was so depressing and dead on that as my cable's out and I'm forced to listen to the radio, I'm also forced to entertain myself.

If you're playing for one run, and its 1st/2nd with 0 outs, its actually not a bad idea. Assuming you like your chances with the next guy. And assuming your hitter doesn't foul off two bunt attempts...

Is Joe Torre managing to lose this game? Brilliant decision going with Beam for this MUST WIN GAME. Is it that hard to understand?

This isn't Proctor's fault. He's given up a lucky ground ball and a broken bat bloop. Sometimes I can't stand Torre's "laid back" approach to managing.

Way to hand Texas the game here.

We're losing this game.

Memo to Joe and Cash: Matt Smith has a 0.00 ERA. Yes he is left handed but he can also get righties out.

359 pitch 10 innings an dpossibly miss 10 weeks? no way. If you've got injury issues, especially back injuries, best thing to do is tell the boss and let someone else step up. It isn't October yet.

362 Never. When will Joe ever learn anything? When will Joe learn that Bernie can't hit against righties? This is a disaster. Are they just throwing in the towel?

Don't they know that Jeter, Giambi and A-Rod are due up in the 9th? Its not over yet. Why bring in the 7th starter?

I don't see how you you guys can bash Torre for the bullpen blowing the lead. Obviously Farnsworth couldn't go. Proctor was dead tired. Villone had already pitched. Myers is a loogy and I think all the hitters were righties or switch hitters before the rangers took the lead. And how many times can you pitch Rivera two innings. He didn't have much choise but to go to Beam. The problem is Wright. He can never get out of the 6th and it's killing the bullpen.

420 How about having Beam in the bullpen in the first place? Torre didn't like Smith because he walked too many guys. Torre told Beam, "you'll be back soon" when Beam was sent down to Columbus.

While both pitchers have thrown very few innings, the splits are ridiculous. Smith has been devastatingly more effective than Beam. It's not even close. And Smith has been great against righties too.

I question why Joe Torre has Beam on the team and not Smith.

I question why Proctor stays in to pitch to a lefty instead of Mike Myers. Why was Myers throwing? For work?

That's why I question Torre's use of the bullpen. Even under subpar conditions, that was bad managing.

Michael Young.

This one is a nail-biter.

Fastball, high. Young nearly jumps out of his shoes, fouls it back. 0-1.

Throw to first (pinch runner, Freddie Guzman get back). Pitch-out. Not running. 1-1.

Big lead...Throw to first. Back in time.

Mo taking forever. Runner goes. Young hits a slow grounder to Jeter. Throws to first, in time.

Game.

Awwwww, Bacon.

When Giambi homers, our chances are always good. Jetes lead off single was very big... got the blood flowing.

Luckily, I've got my wife trained where if she sees me scowling during the time where there's a game on, she knows not to ask, "Is there something wrong?" or the ever-maddening, "Are you mad at me?"

2006-07-26 21:20:02

OK - let me get this straight-

Yankees come back three times- and sweep!
ChiSox lose, Boston loses, Toronto is losing...Giambi breaks out, ARod may very well be back...are all the freakin' planets aligned tonight or what...I better call in for new car insurance or something!

2006-07-26 21:25:14
491.   seamus
so Yankees play Tampa, while Boston plays the Angels and Toronto plays Oakland. Detroit meets the red hot Twins.

If the Yankees can manage a sweep behind our top 3 pitchers, we'll likely be within 1/2 game of Boston (in front or behind) and a 1.5 game lead on the Twins in the wild card. This could be important because next week we have to play Toronto who had our number pretty good last week.

To see the lack of professionalism and general annoyance of Rangers radio announcers go to MLB.COM and contrast their reactions to Giambi's shot and Young's two- run single

Giambi's- "Giambi (three second pause) gone...(silence for the next ten seconds)

Young's- and a ground ball up the MIDDLE HE DID IT AGAIN- THIS GAME IS TIED!!!!!

468481 Re: Mo shift

Are there publicly available hit charts against Rivera? I wonder if there is some kind of funky outfield deployment (extremely shallow CF, RF/LF deep in the alleys) that might pay yield a bit better results on average.

I could definitely see playing a very shallow CF with runners in scoring position. Mo gives up a lot of flares. Managers are getting more adventurous with the Giambi/Ortiz shifts, maybe Torre will invent the Rivera rover.

Re the "Mo shift":

I was thinking along the same lines -- but for Wang rather than Mo.

I haven't looked it up, but the frustrating thing following along on Gamecenter when he pitches is seeing that "infield hit" pop up. Wang's gotta give up a bunch of those. Perhaps they can be cut down.

My thought was, since he gives up so many gbs,to play 5 infielders when he pitches. Have 1b and 3b guard the lines to prevent doubles, then 2b and ss shaded towards 1b and 3b, with someone behind the 2b bag. Have two oufielders positioned in left center and right center -- tho those positions could be changed depending upon what a hit chart would show regarding the flyballs and liners he gives up.
