Jaret Wright is on the hill tonight as the Yanks go for the sweep in Texas. Since you never know what you are going to get with Wright, it would behoove the Yankee offense to break open a can o whup ass against the Rangers' rookie southpaw, John Rheinecker.
Love to see a big night from Alex Rodriguez. Giambi too, provided that he's in the line-up. Giambi has slumped considerably in July with little to no fanfare. Hopefully, Damon will play and help get the ball a-rollin. And perhaps, a little bit of comic relief from Sal Fasano.
Let's Go Yan-Kees.
Here is the lineup:
YANKEES
Johnny Damon CF
Derek Jeter SS
Jason Giambi DH
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Bernie Williams RF
Andy Phillips 1B
Melky Cabrera LF
Sal Fasano C
Miguel Cairo 2B
Jaret Wright RHP

Scott Erickson is getting DFA'd.
At first I thought they were talking about Proctor.

His batting stats aren't that great, but he hits very well with runners on. While Robby hits really well, but not with RISP.
(None on / RISP)
Cano .371 / .227
Cairo .180 / .341

Very cute. Nice to see A-Rod so relaxed and playful.
Don't ask me why I went ahead and decided to read what I knew was going to be a useless editorial from a notorious Yankee hater/Sawx fan that would only serve to irritate me.
Don't ask me why I am giving it further notoriety by pasting the link here.
Warning: it contains more nonsense about A-rod. If you're smart, you'll skip over it and spend 2 minutes doing something else more productive (really, I mean it). The part that really got under my skin was the Jeter comparison toward the very end. I won't touch that comment except to say that, of the 2 players, A-rod is not the one having the MVP-caliber season.

11 If only the top 3 of our lineup would join the club today, now, that's gonna be a fun game.
Unfortunately, Torre is bad at shuffling the lineup. He likes certain guys in certain spots, and doesn't like to deviate.
If that's the case, Joe may be right in not messing too much. If players are comfortable where they are, that might be reason enough to leave them there.

this is a real bummer. Third night in a row i'm, stuck with texas feed on mlb-tv. These are the worst announcers EVER!
Let's go, A-rod!
mlb.tv has really gone downhill. You'd think it would get better, but instead they have focused on control and exclusivity.
46 Does everyone who grounds out stink?
OK, I'll wake up now.
I think the Yankees needed to trade for Fasano to keep the mustache quota constant after Donnie shaved. RJ wasn't enough.
Man, the Fasano pics really run the gamut. The one they are showing on YES shows him completely clean-shaven, with very short hair. Must be from his minor league days.
The one on Gameday looks like his Phillies pic, Photoshopped to add a Yankees cap.
In reality, he's somewhere in between. Cut his hair and shaved the beard, but still has a mustache.
/scarcasm
Damn, Larry Bowa cost my fantasy team an RBI with that stop sign.
So is this an instance of drugs being better than hugs?
70 Exactly. Illegal drugs don't sue for large sums of money causing major embarassment.
Sigh. For awhile there, I thought Wright had turned the corner.
Looks like we have two holes in the rotation, not just one. :-P
79 They showed that on YES, too. Pretty funny.
/sarcasm
Nice way to cover the bag Rheinecker.
Classic.
(Afflack question. 7 managers before Torre)
Dallas Green. Ugh.
Come on, Yanks! You swept the Chisox, you can sweep these guys.
I hate J. Wright.
The O needs to pull this one out for them.
What a convienent time for ESPN to construct a controversy. Oh well, I should be used to it as a Duke fan, nothing sells better than Yankees and Duke hating.
they have the same problem..
given the state of the rotation.. we need to be tempered in our hopes when we start our backend of the rotation
that holds true for all AL east teams..
C'mon, Andy.
Either way, stay out of Bristol. Unless you have a Larry Bird Jersey you can wear.
Kryptonite, man.
147 Nope, they're still babbling. But Karros is calling out ESPN for creating news rather than reporting it, which is awesome.
If he were at 90, we'd be in the clear.
God knows what's happening with Cano (who while having a good average has not been a run producer) and Damon, who seems to be always on injury-thin ace.
The ChiSox just lost 10 of 12, so we are in the WC race. However, Minn has won 34 of 42 (unbelievable!) and will bury us soon.
So we can
1) get an impact bat
2) hope Boston plays sub .550 ball
3) make other plans for October
Now THAT would be a ballgame.
I'm sorry, the recent internet rant I read about Sterling was so depressing and dead on that as my cable's out and I'm forced to listen to the radio, I'm also forced to entertain myself.
The ballgame hasn't helped in that regard. A bit of a yawner.
I'm struggling to think of a crappier first baseman in the AL than Phillips besides Travis Lee. The sample size is there, and Phillips is bad. Heave ho to the 'Bama Boy.
It'll end in tears.
That was a little gross.
Nice hit, thought.
Of course Bernie walks. Where did this come from, that's like '98 Bernie.
2-3 1.90 ERA, 30K/7BB 21 SV
"phillips runs pretty well"
has ken lost it?
LECHE!!!
YOU DA MAN!!!!!!!!!
That's why no one's stormed Steinbrenner's house demanding a big bat. We got plenty of offense.
Ha- just as Melky hit that ball, AC/DC's "Send for the Man" came on iTunes. How appropriate...
BTW, we need a nickname for him.
July OPS
A-Rod: .943
Giambi: .673
If anyone is failing right now its Giambi for sure. He needs to pull out of this HR or out nosedive.
Interesting choice. I guess he needs work, but I thought Joe would go straight to Farnsy here.
AAAAAAAARRGHHHHHHHHHHH!
This isn't Proctor's fault. He's given up a lucky ground ball and a broken bat bloop. Sometimes I can't stand Torre's "laid back" approach to managing.
Way to hand Texas the game here.
Memo to Joe and Cash: Matt Smith has a 0.00 ERA. Yes he is left handed but he can also get righties out.
He never should have been in this mess in the first place. Joe Torre should get the blown save.
Damn. And now they're blowing it out.
And Proctor cannot be used every day. Joe, you have to resist the temptation.
Don't they know that Jeter, Giambi and A-Rod are due up in the 9th? Its not over yet. Why bring in the 7th starter?
369 Maybe they figure Chacon's the one with most experience pitching with men on. :-P
Now rally.
Keep it up, kid, and you could get your job back.
It would be cool if Giambi could get a hit. He's down to .249.
Nice job getting on Derek. Let's go, slumping Jason.
And Jeter gets on. Let's go, Yan-kees...
Real life trumps fantasy every time. I know too many people who believe the opposite.
;-)
Way to shut me up Jason...
Has there been any word on Farnsworth? Is he hurt?
Chacon is definately player of the game ... that and Giambi / A-rod
You don't want to know....
Let's go, Mo! It is on you!
While both pitchers have thrown very few innings, the splits are ridiculous. Smith has been devastatingly more effective than Beam. It's not even close. And Smith has been great against righties too.
I question why Joe Torre has Beam on the team and not Smith.
I question why Proctor stays in to pitch to a lefty instead of Mike Myers. Why was Myers throwing? For work?
That's why I question Torre's use of the bullpen. Even under subpar conditions, that was bad managing.
Soooo, it stays off for now. Keep me updated people.
Ask Vernon Wells.
This one is a nail-biter.
Fastball, high. Young nearly jumps out of his shoes, fouls it back. 0-1.
Throw to first (pinch runner, Freddie Guzman get back). Pitch-out. Not running. 1-1.
Big lead...Throw to first. Back in time.
Mo taking forever. Runner goes. Young hits a slow grounder to Jeter. Throws to first, in time.
Game.
Awwwww, Bacon.
Man, Wasn't that hard work.
Not that it mattered tonight.
In the words our esteemed principle owner, "never give up!"
pistolpete-No more game watching for you.
Ron Burgandy-Showers whenever the Yanks are trailing.
Just kidding!
Nice win, Yanks!
Nobody asked those questions, but still, they're settled.
Good Night Everybody!
I know, I know - "but what fun would that be...?"
That's the thing about following this team - the lows are devastating, but the highs are unlike any other feeling in the world...
Also of note, the Yanks have a better winning percentage than the Mets.
When Giambi homers, our chances are always good. Jetes lead off single was very big... got the blood flowing.
When was the last game where both ARod and Giambi homered? It seems like quite a while.
Great win. GREAT win.
Good night all.
Luckily, I've got my wife trained where if she sees me scowling during the time where there's a game on, she knows not to ask, "Is there something wrong?" or the ever-maddening, "Are you mad at me?"
She has about a 2 month window from the beginning of February to the end of March where she has a normal husband. Unless the NY Rangers are in it (ha).
Yankees come back three times- and sweep!
ChiSox lose, Boston loses, Toronto is losing...Giambi breaks out, ARod may very well be back...are all the freakin' planets aligned tonight or what...I better call in for new car insurance or something!
If the Yankees can manage a sweep behind our top 3 pitchers, we'll likely be within 1/2 game of Boston (in front or behind) and a 1.5 game lead on the Twins in the wild card. This could be important because next week we have to play Toronto who had our number pretty good last week.
Giambi's- "Giambi (three second pause) gone...(silence for the next ten seconds)
Young's- and a ground ball up the MIDDLE HE DID IT AGAIN- THIS GAME IS TIED!!!!!
Second baseman Robinson Cano, who has missed more than a month with a strained hamstring, will resume base-running drills on Friday in Tampa, Fla., with the hope of starting a minor-league assignment next week.
Sheff also had is cast removed today.
Are there publicly available hit charts against Rivera? I wonder if there is some kind of funky outfield deployment (extremely shallow CF, RF/LF deep in the alleys) that might pay yield a bit better results on average.
I could definitely see playing a very shallow CF with runners in scoring position. Mo gives up a lot of flares. Managers are getting more adventurous with the Giambi/Ortiz shifts, maybe Torre will invent the Rivera rover.
I was thinking along the same lines -- but for Wang rather than Mo.
I haven't looked it up, but the frustrating thing following along on Gamecenter when he pitches is seeing that "infield hit" pop up. Wang's gotta give up a bunch of those. Perhaps they can be cut down.
My thought was, since he gives up so many gbs,to play 5 infielders when he pitches. Have 1b and 3b guard the lines to prevent doubles, then 2b and ss shaded towards 1b and 3b, with someone behind the 2b bag. Have two oufielders positioned in left center and right center -- tho those positions could be changed depending upon what a hit chart would show regarding the flyballs and liners he gives up.
