The Marlins kicked the ball around like they were Chico's Bail Bonds in the first inning last night (actually it was two players who accounted for three--should have been four--errors), but escaped only down 3-0. They tied the game swiftly and hung around for the rest of the evening. It was a very warm in New York and it rained steadily during the middle innings. Chien-Ming Wong pitched well, though he wasn't nearly as impressive as he was in his previous two outings. Kyle Farnsworth did what he does best--give Yankee fans indigestion--as the Marlins crept closer in the eighth. But Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth as the Yanks held on for a 6-5 victory. Alex Rodriguez, Andy Phillips and Jorge Posada each had three hits, and Jorge had three RBI as well. The Yanks remain two behind the streaking Red Sox who won again last night. The Blue Jays, however, fall to four games out of first, after their loss to the Mets in Toronto.

Today is hot and it is very dark outside. Looks like Old Timer's Day could be a warsh out. The regular game is scheduled to start in the late afternoon, but it could be pushed back to this evening, cause man, it sure feels like the skies are going to open up and drench New York City. Hopefully, they get it in. Enjoy!

A rainout wouldn't be bad with Chacon coming up today. Based on pitching matchups, the Sox could be up 3 games after today...but the rain may do us a favor in that regard.

They're honoring Larson's perfect game, which was 50 years ago this October. So they introduce Larson last and Yogi mock jumps into his arms, then needles him "you can't hold me any more." Great stuff.

We're in a rain delay. They're going to do their best to get it in, because they won't see each other again this season. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, too, so they don't want to do a double-header.

I wonder...if the rain pushes the game to 7pm or later, will the blackout restrictions be lifted?

OK, I'm waiting for the rain to clear, watching the Blue Jays-Mets gane. The Jays announcers commented on the extreme shift employed against Delgado and other "elite LH hitter." They them mentioned Ortix, Thome, Giambi, etc. (I know there were shift for Ted Williams). This got me thinking:

Can anyone thing of extreme shifts for RH hitters? If not, why? Are RH less likely to be extreme pull hitters? Are there tactical/positional reasons why you can't use shifts against RHs? (I guess you have to at least leave the 1B in normal position)...

35 I wrote about that this week on Off the Facade. Sure, he's earned it, but he's earned it for 12 weeks. Kevin Maas and Shane Spencer earned it for about 12 weeks also. He's being compared to Rivera. It's absurd.

Geex, I just get back from an all day Aikido seminar, to find out the game's postponed.

Will Chacon be able to bounce back tomorrow or is he basically ruined until next time in the rotation. And if so, why the hell did the f'ing ump wait until the Yankees' pitcher goes out there but the other guy will be fine for tomorrow. I think this was the same storm system we had on Wed. and that storm lasted hours. (5 inches of rain in 5 hours). Utter BS to start a game with such weather.

2006-06-24 16:11:43
83.   Benjamin Kabak
I'm pretty annoyed that the umps allowed the game to begin. I hope Chacon's not burned. The Yanks may need to make a roster move. I wonder whose turn it is at AAA.

Chacon will pitch game 2 on Sunday unless his arm doesn't feel up to it. Villone is the back-up starter. The Yanks will face a call-up for the Marlins. I wonder if Yusmeiro Petit will make his New York debut.

And they also said ESPN has agreed to show the second game on TV tonight, in the NY and Florida markets.

94.   Jeteupthemiddle
I don't know about the Bronx, but I live about 20 minutes away and it is POURING with no end in sight.

I imagine they will get one game in with frequent delays, but playing both games, at the moment, seems impossible.

I think I'd rather start Chacon in the first game in case there are a lot of delays so we don't have to waste Mussina unless a second game is played...

So when are the Marlins next in town to play the Mets, with the Yankees at home?
2006-06-25 10:08:31
96.   Jeteupthemiddle
the Mets and Yankees are rarely, if ever, home at the same time.

I think they would have to look for common off days.

As far as I can tell, the only common day is August 7th.

However, that would give both teams more than 21 games in a row which isn't allowed unless the players agree.

Looks like, if they can't get both in, they would have to play October 2nd...which is the day before the playoffs begin...and only if it matters I guess.

2006-06-25 10:11:24
97.   kdw
Marlins are in NY July 7 weekend and September 18 thru 21, when Yankees are on the road. Radio rumor is that if they don't get in 2 games today, may try and play in NY this Thursday.
2006-06-25 10:25:04
98.   Jeteupthemiddle
At this exact moment, it is not raining where I am...the sun is kind of visible...if they want to get this game in, they better start it.

The Sox game has been postponed already.

Is it me, or have there been LOTS of rainouts so far this season?

2006-06-25 10:29:56
99.   Bob Timmermann
Both teams are off Thursday. I think it would make sense to play the games then if they can't get them in today.

The Red Sox and Phillies are both off tomorrow so they are moving the game to then.

2006-06-25 10:31:29

Seriously, it hasn't been raining for about 25 minutes now....they could be 2 innings in by now...I don't get it.

Also, I checked at weather.com, and it looks like they should be able to get tonight's game in as well..with delays of course, but between 7-10 (even though the game starts at 8) there isn't "heavy" rain anymore but "occasional T-Storms." So maybe...

2006-06-25 10:47:21

101 Radio was making the same observation earlier, saying that if they had started the game close to on time they could have played a couple of innings by now. They have been lamenting using radar rather than going by what's actually happening on the field.

Giambi's now out with a stiff back?

Also, apparently the Yankees are saying that it's the officiating crew who has delayed the game to date. I thought that the home team had control of whether to start a game due to weather, with the umps taking control once the game has started?

2006-06-25 11:07:25

Because Giambi is out with back spasms so Cairo is at first now...I suppose because if Cano or Jeter or Arod get hurt, they can move Cairo to that position instead losing the DH had Cairo been the DH.

113 Willis is murder on lefties... which is why Cano was not originally in the lineup.

Well, Cairo in the two-hole might not be such a bad idea. Check out his splits:

Against lefties: .367 / .958
Against righties: .190 / .461

Oh well. For a few minutes, I thought Moose had a shot today at that elusive no hitter.

Were the Fish running on Bernie's arm or what? It wasn't even close.

123 It was a great throw. Very quick, and very accurate. Jorgie caught it standing between the plate and the runner. Guy didn't have a chance.

I thought Bernie's pickup was a bit slow, but his throw was decent and Cano's was great. With Bernie slow to get to the ball I was thinking easy score, but when the camera switched to showing Jacobs rounding third, I changed my mind. He was already looking gassed.

Wow. That was Miguel Cabrera's 24th double of the season. He's a doubles machine.

Jacobs ran pretty slow. I think they sent him on Bernie's arm, but Cano made them pay.

On BBTN today, ex-GM Steve Philips was calling for the Tigers to trade Zumaya to the Braves for Smoltz. I think that's why he's an ex-GM. But it's not just the Yankees who are getting asked for their live young arms.

Looks to me like Jacobs is injured. There's something wrong with his leg.

The trainer didn't even come over to see him, so I don't think he was injured on the play. Must be a previously existing injury.
