Baseball Toaster was unplugged on February 4, 2009.
The Marlins kicked the ball around like they were Chico's Bail Bonds in the first inning last night (actually it was two players who accounted for three--should have been four--errors), but escaped only down 3-0. They tied the game swiftly and hung around for the rest of the evening. It was a very warm in New York and it rained steadily during the middle innings. Chien-Ming Wong pitched well, though he wasn't nearly as impressive as he was in his previous two outings. Kyle Farnsworth did what he does best--give Yankee fans indigestion--as the Marlins crept closer in the eighth. But Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth as the Yanks held on for a 6-5 victory. Alex Rodriguez, Andy Phillips and Jorge Posada each had three hits, and Jorge had three RBI as well. The Yanks remain two behind the streaking Red Sox who won again last night. The Blue Jays, however, fall to four games out of first, after their loss to the Mets in Toronto.
Today is hot and it is very dark outside. Looks like Old Timer's Day could be a warsh out. The regular game is scheduled to start in the late afternoon, but it could be pushed back to this evening, cause man, it sure feels like the skies are going to open up and drench New York City. Hopefully, they get it in. Enjoy!

Ouch.

Probably will be just in lurking mode here for a while.
Maybe they'll be able to get the game in tonight, but I dunno.
Double-header tomorrow?
Meanwhile, Sheff spent the whole time in the Yankee dugout with his kid.
Anyway, it's great to be back home. Now to read your and Alex's write-ups of the last week of games.

I wonder...if the rain pushes the game to 7pm or later, will the blackout restrictions be lifted?
Can anyone thing of extreme shifts for RH hitters? If not, why? Are RH less likely to be extreme pull hitters? Are there tactical/positional reasons why you can't use shifts against RHs? (I guess you have to at least leave the 1B in normal position)...
Nobody is that good though. His time will come.

And Charlie Manuel just went to Ryan Franklin in a tie game. This has killed him all season. We'll see how that works out today.
Well, at least the Argies are up on Mexico in the World Cup. Wondergoal by Maxi Rodriguez.
That's why I was wondering if this game gets pushed past 7pm, if the blackout restrictions will be lifted.
Too bad I have to Gameday it today.
He's throwing way too many pitches. Already gave up a base hit and a HBP.
Lucky it wasn't a homerun.
Tarp is going on the field again.
Weather permitting...
Anyone want to sit in the rain with me tomorrow? I got tickets to both games.
Will Chacon be able to bounce back tomorrow or is he basically ruined until next time in the rotation. And if so, why the hell did the f'ing ump wait until the Yankees' pitcher goes out there but the other guy will be fine for tomorrow. I think this was the same storm system we had on Wed. and that storm lasted hours. (5 inches of rain in 5 hours). Utter BS to start a game with such weather.
Chacon is scheduled to start again tomorrow night. If he can't, Ron Villone will start.
But looking at the weather report, I really don't see the games being played.

(Miggy at 2B again?)
And they also said ESPN has agreed to show the second game on TV tonight, in the NY and Florida markets.
I imagine they will get one game in with frequent delays, but playing both games, at the moment, seems impossible.
I think I'd rather start Chacon in the first game in case there are a lot of delays so we don't have to waste Mussina unless a second game is played...
I think they would have to look for common off days.
As far as I can tell, the only common day is August 7th.
However, that would give both teams more than 21 games in a row which isn't allowed unless the players agree.
Looks like, if they can't get both in, they would have to play October 2nd...which is the day before the playoffs begin...and only if it matters I guess.
The Sox game has been postponed already.
Is it me, or have there been LOTS of rainouts so far this season?
The Red Sox and Phillies are both off tomorrow so they are moving the game to then.
Also, I checked at weather.com, and it looks like they should be able to get tonight's game in as well..with delays of course, but between 7-10 (even though the game starts at 8) there isn't "heavy" rain anymore but "occasional T-Storms." So maybe...
Also, apparently the Yankees are saying that it's the officiating crew who has delayed the game to date. I thought that the home team had control of whether to start a game due to weather, with the umps taking control once the game has started?
/end rambling.
What I don't understand is why cairo is batting 2nd.
I wish I didn't have to go to work tonight.
Nice hit by Andy, though. He may just be playing Giambi into a permanent DH role.
I hope that's just wishful thinking on their part. Duncan and Cox for Lee I'd be ok with, esp if we inked Lee to a 2 year extension, but Hughes?
Against lefties: .367 / .958
Against righties: .190 / .461
Were the Fish running on Bernie's arm or what? It wasn't even close.
On BBTN today, ex-GM Steve Philips was calling for the Tigers to trade Zumaya to the Braves for Smoltz. I think that's why he's an ex-GM. But it's not just the Yankees who are getting asked for their live young arms.
Moose hasn't looked the same since the no-no ended.
The trainer didn't even come over to see him, so I don't think he was injured on the play. Must be a previously existing injury.
Upperdecker for JD!
Kay mentioned earlier in the game that Moose said balls are being caught in CF that haven't been caught in years.
Gotta wonder how Bernie feels, hearing that.
Go Orange!
