Judgment Day
2005-10-01 10:04
by Cliff Corcoran

The winner of today's game will clinch a tie for the American League East. If the White Sox win in Cleveland, the loser of today's game will clinch a tie for the American League Wild Card.

The Yankees and Red Sox are each sending their best pitchers to the mound. At Yankee Stadium on September 11, Randy Johnson pitched seven shutout innings to defeat Tim Wakefield 1-0 on a first-inning home run by Jason Giambi off a Wakefield curve ball, with Tom Gordon and Mariano Rivera nailing down the win.

Giambi starts at DH today after making a crucial throwing error in last night's loss. Tino Martinez gets the start at first, batting behind Robinson Cano, who hits sixth after having one of just three Yankee hits off Wakefield three weeks ago. Bernie's in center. Flaherty's behind the plate.

For the Red Sox, Kevin Millar's in at first. Bill Mueller moves up to the six spot ahead of catcher Doug Mirabelli. With Gabe Kapler out for the year with an Achilles injury, Trot Nixon stays in the line-up against Johnson and drops to eighth.

Bklyn,

Yes Fox is correct. The Tribe would be 2 out, behind us. The best they could do would be tie with Boston and force a one game playoff with Boston for the Wild Card.

2005-10-01 11:56:45
244.   rbj
Yes #237 Bklyn. Cleveland would be two behind in the loss column with one to play. Then, even if Yanks and Sox tie, we win the east because we've won the season series.

It Buck correct? — We win, Tribe loses today and AL East is ours?

If the Indians lose and we win, they are 2 back with one to play. If the Sox win tomorrow, both Yanks and Sox beat Cleveland by 1 game, so the East is Division and WC.
Why we don't play Boston for the 'Division', I'm not sure. I guess we get the Division because we (will have) won the season series.
We would also play the Angels (I think) as Chicago with the best record plays the WC.

In this case, the WC gets a break, playing and traveling to Chicago instead of CA.

I hate Fox! However, an Indians loss is SOOOOOO important. Imagine... if Yanks/ChiSox win today, tomorrow is a total rest day for players and pen. Compare that to needing to play tight games tomorrow and possibly Monday. If things go well, we have a totally rested team heading for CA.

While the Indians looked unstoppable, the pressure has gotten to them. No way they should have lost yesterday. Scored only 1 run in 12 innings. Today they are pressing and not hitting. I do not expect they will come back.

Lets hope Cleveland loses before we win. That way we can celebrate AT FENWAY both today AND tomorrow!

I'd say put both Moose and Wright out there for 2-3 inning each. Give them enough work to stay fresh, but not enough to tire out. It'd also give Torre & co. an extra data point on how available Moose and Wright are for the postseason.

It shouldn't even be a question. If he did that against Pedro or Gibson, or even Clemens, he gets beaned for sure. I just don't get it. That is how baseball works. The only thing I like about Varitek is that he runs like a banche on HR's. You don't show up the pitcher, and that is what Manny does. I can't imagine Ozzie will field much of a team tomorrow. A Cleveland win and Red Sox loss puts the Sox in Cleveland for a playoff game. Kills the off-day for both teams, and used us theor pitching.

Will Torre put a team on the field tomorrow? Aside from pride, we (if we win today) have as much as we can get (aside from a more tired opponent). Will we rest tomorrow, or play for the win?

Murphy, because Cleveland lost, the Yankees will clinch with a win because Cleveland can't catch them. Cleveland can only catch Boston if Boston loses, but that would make the Yanks the division winners as well. If Boston wins, Cleveland is eliminated and the Yankees win the tie-breaker for the division (today would give them ten wins in 19 head-to-head games with the sox).

You guys thought you had it bad with the FOX split screen. I'm in Dallas for a wedding, and couldn't even sneak updates early in the game because AM radio around here has nothing but college football.

I finally rush back to the hotel to catch the final, and the Holiday Inn TV system lost their FOX feed. I can't get broadband in my hotel either, so I end up finally catching Mo closing out the division on a 12kbps Real Audio feed from WCBS.

I can't believe it --F----ing DIVISION CHAMPS BABY! I had figured it would come down to Sunday, so I actually set up my flight back to Boston on Sunday so that I would have a few hours in Atlanta (my connecting city) to watch the game somewhere in the airport...how's that for being irrational?

Singledd, you have to pitch Mussina to find out what he has. The rotation is set for Chacon, Wang & Johnson to start the ALDS. If Moose is aces tomorrow, I give him Game 4 (if nec.) and put Small in the pen. If Moose struggles, I keep Small in the rotation.

As for the line-up, I sit Sheff & Giambi because of their recent injury issues. Maybe DH Matsui. So that's say Crosby and Lawton in the OF corners and Tino at 1B. Otherwise I start everyone else, it would be nice to force Cle and Bost to play on Monday.

If they end up with the same record, the Angels have the tiebreaker. For that to happen the Angels have to win today and tomorrow and the Yanks have to lose tomorrow. Otherwise Yanks have homefield in the first round.

What a relief! As for rest, it would be great for the regulars, but how sweet would it be for Cleveland to win tomorrow and the Yanks to win/completely knock Boston out of the playoffs on their own field? It wouldn't make up for last year, but it would take away a lot of the sting. I say go all out tomorrow, except maybe pitch Jaret Wright instead of Moose.

Coming into today the Yanks were a game up on Anaheim. Angels would have to win today and tomorrow combined with a Yankee loss to get homefield (that would tie them and the LAAoA own the season series). One more Angels loss or a Yankee win tomorrow would give the Yanks homefield over LA. Meanwhile, Chicago has clinched homefield throughout.

Marc, Robbie's ROY is far more unlikely than Mo's CY. I think Mo could have a very legit shot at the CY. I don't think Cano will win the ROY, in part because he's simply not been the best rookie in the AL this season, he has far more competition than many in NY realize.

We also have to see if Wright has anything in the tank. I like Reynold's anaylsis of Wright, that he pitches better in high stress situations when he is fired up, and he has a hard time beginning games because of this.

Moose in Game 1. Wow. Awful decision by Torre, just brutal. Cripes. I hope I'm wrong.

I assume the starters will be Moose, Unit, Wang and Chacon, but no idea in what order. Moose in 1 and Randy probably in 3, but otherwise, dunno.

Wang would be on regular rest for Game 2.

That Sheffboyardee thing is a hoot!

I was watching YES. Leiter is okay. He's different, but I like him, even if his pitching often drives me nuts. The Yankees rag on him for his age, by asking him how he pitched to Babe Ruth.

2005-10-01 14:40:15
541.   Harley
I take it back. I suppose you could go with Chacon in one, and Wang in two. Then Johnson. Then, well-hidden, sorta, Mussina.

But it ain't gonna happen. See all the love for Joe on the field after the game? That's cuz he sticks with veterans, usually longer than he should. But that's the way he manages.

2005-10-01 14:42:43

Yes, he had one moment. I just took his comments to mean that he wanted it to be more about him, but I guess you could say he wished he contributed more. Either way I don't see how he could help this team as Wright and Small give them 2 long reliever and Proctor would be just as good as Embree or Leiter at pitching to lefties. Though Leiter's numbers against lefties this year are actually pretty good.

How has Moose been against Anaheim? I have a feeling that he would perform better against the White Sox.

canoe, cano, wang, wong, it's starting to sounds like a comedy act but let's face it they're ballplayers not linguists and I suspect the first pronunciatin or derivative nickname that gets repeated twice in the clubhouse ends up sticking the rest of the year. I'm sure Mussina pronounces everything correctly because he uses that Stanford brain to cogitate about every name the way he does every pitch.

I like that idea of a Moose/Small tag team. For one thing I don't trust Moose yet that he's really physically sharp AND has his stuff

If Cleveland's the WC, we play them, right? Chicago can't play them, same division, so they get the worse record of NY - LAA. If Boston's the WC, Chicago gets them, and NY gets LAA?
Is this correct?

CONGRATULATIONS YANKEES FANS EVERYWHERE....
Cliff and Alex thank you..I am enjoying this so much today.. What a turn of events huh? Lets enjoy this today and rally for the postseason. We got some payback to give to the Angels as well for 2002..I am so proud of this team. Suck on it Red Sox Nation. Alex for MVP... Go Yankees..

obviously if you can start Mussina in game one, you do it. He's been a very good post-season pitcher. Chacon and Small have had a nice run, but that doesn't mean they've moved ahead of Moose.
I would consider give Moose an inning or two tomorrow to keep the rust off.
I certainly wouldn't play any of the regulars tomorrow (and I doubt Torre will)-they haven't had a day off in too long to not take advantage of winning today.

According to mlb.com, here's the possibilites:

If both Boston and Cleveland win ...
The Yankees would still own the AL East title, due to having a 10-9 edge in regular-season play with the Red Sox. And the Red Sox will be the Wild Card and play at Chicago on Tuesday.

If Boston wins and Cleveland loses ...
The Yankees are AL East champions (see above) and the Sox own the Wild Card and play at Chicago on Tuesday.

If Boston loses and Cleveland wins ...
The Yankees are AL East champs. The Red Sox host the Indians Monday in a one-game playoff for the Wild Card.

If Boston and Cleveland both lose ...
The ultimate clarity: The Yankees win the AL East and the Red Sox are the Wild Card and open at Chicago on Tuesday.

What about homefield advantage? Is there any benefit to the Yanks if they win tomorrow? (Other than possibly forcing the Sox to play a tiebreaker.)

The scenario where the Sox and Indians have to play an extra game sounds good to me, especially if the less dangerous team wins. Not sure which team that is, though.

Chicago clinched the homefield throughout the AL playoffs, so the Yanks outcome tomorrow makes no difference there...

Yanks need Texas to beat the Angels tonight or tomorrow to ensure homefield in the event we meet the Halos, no matter if we win or lose tomorrow. If the Yanks and Halos finish with the same record, the Angels will get the homefield via their 6-4 record against us in the regular season...

If Boston gets the Wild Card and beats the Angels, and if we eliminate Chicago, we would hold the homefield over Boston...

2005-10-01 16:42:09
562.   BklynBomber
In short, other than possibly forcing Boston to play on Monday, the only scenario-altering thing that a Yanks win tomorrow would have is ensuring homefield in a potential matchup with the Angels...

Thanks! Guess this means tomorrow's game will be nice and relaxing.

Though it would be nice if we could beat Boston with our scrubs, like Chicago did to Cleveland. :-D

I had to go to a meeting this afternoon, I put it off aas long as humanly possible, but left with Bernie about to bat in the 8th and showed up late. It was torture. No radio around here even talking about it, just USC football and the Padres (I like the Pads, but they are my national league team, which is so far below the Yanks). So I had to hope for the best until someone told me (who came later on) that the Yanks had indeed clinched. Thank God!

Good to see everyone is still posting and excited!

I can't believe Torre would be so stupid as to start Moose in game 1, but then again, I guess I can believe it. It seems like a very very unfortuante move, whereas if he starts tomorrow, you can see what he has. So who pitches tomorrow, DePaula? if thats not throwing in the towel than what is? Joe, please don't do this. I guess it would be Wright

I think it is worth trying to win tomorrow and seeing what we have in Moose and Wright, and forcing the Sox to push themselves, in addition to the fact that I would much rather face the White Sox than the Angels. Oh well, this is Torre...

Ortiz will hit a few HRs tomorrow and "tie up" his MVP status, but we all know that today is the day that really mattered. I am so happy, and so in shock

Mad love to Cliff and Alex for keeping the Banter Extra Innings Lounge open 24/7... all is right with the world once again — the Pinstripes are playing October baseball — where wives, girlfriends, better halfs, kids, pets, bosses, clients, whoever... either join in or take a back seat and keep their F'n mouths shut ;-)

In terms of our first round opponent, I rather see the White Sox. Even though we may end up with home field over the Halos, I don't think the Angels fear us on any level. A lot of that squad that KO'd us in '02 is still there and they've beaten us more than we've beaten them since '98. Add in a emotionally drained Yankee team that may have to deal with red-eye coast-to-coast flights, etc... who needs it?

Not to say (or disrespect) the ChiSox 'fear us' — but I like the way we match up with them, plus a few intangibles like the Sox suddenly on the biggest stage with everything on the line, where I'm thinking/hoping the poise element might be in our favor.

Update: No help from the Rangers yet, Angels up 6-1 in the 5th...

Bklyn, I was sure I was the only still here - you beat me to the 6-5 Angels still leading post. =)

BTW, after Iguchi's HR today that helped us win the division, I'd be A-OK if he won ROY over Robbie. Probably Huston Street or Joe Blanton really deserves it, based on performance, but I'd be surprised if either on them won.

Pat Shields brought in to face Sori... who goes down lookin'. Funny moment: Shields delivery takes him off the mound toward third base, he throws the pitch and starts trotting to the dugout before the ump even signals the call...

Top 8: Ex-Yank Juan Rivera drops one inside the right field foul pole for an HR. Back to 7-5 Halos...

Bklyn, its one of the things I love most about this place. =)

Stupid Shields - two out, no one on for Texas - argh! He's been terrible the last couple months, why did he have to remember how to pitch now?

Hey, DeRosa just singled - hopefully Texas can get the top of the order up!

If anyone is paying attention still, Gary Matthews Jr tripled off K-Rod - with one out now in the bottom of the 9th, Teixeira, Blalock, and Sori due up. We might get that 2nd seed locked up yet tonight - the best ending to a great day.
2005-10-01 20:07:40

Now Teixeira tripled - 8-7 Angels, still only 1 out, Blalock, Sori, and maybe Mench coming up!

Bklyn good to know that there is still someone here, but whats the scenario where we can play the Chisox? If Cle wins the WC, we would play them right and if the Sox win the WC, they would play the Chisox. Am I missing anything?
2005-10-01 20:25:24
578.   Shaun P
watziznehm2, I don't think we can play the ChiSox in the 1st round (curses). Yanks would have to be the 3 seed in the AL and Cleveland would have to win the WC = they'd be the 4 seed, couldn't play 1 seed Chicago 'cause they're from the same division = Chicago plays 3 seed (ie Yanks).

BUT for Cleveland to win the WC, we need to beat Boston tomorrow - and one more Yankee win makes us the 2 seed. I guess the question becomes whether where we play the Angels on Tuesday - the Bronx, or wherever the hell the Angels are these days. ;)

So, long story short, I think you've got it covered right. I could be wrong though - its pretty late, and I'm pretty tired.

Guess we'll fall a few comments short of 600 tonight. Should be fun to watch tomorrow's game - I'm really hoping Torre lets Bernie manage.

8-7 Angels, final. Sori let us down twice tonight! No loyalty ;-)

watz — For us to open against the ChiSox, we would have to beat Boston tomorrow — while the Tribe wins against Chicago — which would force the do-or-die one game playoff for the Wild Card in Fenway on Monday. If Cleveland wins that game, we would open against Chicago and the Tribe would play the Angels in the opening round...

In short, if Cleveland pulls it off and gets the Wild Card, MLB rules state that a WC team cannot play it's Division Champ in the opening round (just like Yanks and the Red Sox last year)...

My head is spinnin'... 99% sure that's correct

I hope we don't have to fly to LA to start the playoffs. I hate that trip. The Yankees always seem to come out sluggish.

Whatever the case, I think we will prevail in that series. Likewise, I don't fear Chicago despite the pitching. The Sox are the only team that give me the willies.

Anaheim is certainly tough and I think we'll have a fight ahead of us, but they aren't the same team they were in 2002 to me. Vladdy is a monster, but the rest of their guys aren't as scary as they were a few years back....with the exception of K-Rod.

Chicago doesn't scare me at all either. Their starters have been super tough all year, but somehow I think the Yankees will handle them.

Imagine another 7 game series with the Red Sox. Ugh. Will any of us survive that?

Bklyn:

We cannot play the White Sox in the first round. If Boston is the Wild Card they would automatically face the White Sox. If Cleveland is the Wild Card that means we beat Boston tomorrow so we'd have a better record than Anaheim and thus we would play Cleveland.

Well, I think home field is a vvery major factor to play for tomorrow, especially cxonsidering this team's home/road splits. So considering that, I would go all out tommorow Joe. The Yanks are the second best team in the majors behind the Sox, and just barely behind the Sox, so us at home is so much better than us on the road. Especially with those f'ing "thinder sticks' and the stupid rally monkey. eww

I'm curious about the lineup. I think it sounds like a bunch of the regulars want a shot at knocking the Sox into Monday. My best guess is that Torre will go heavy on rookies and backups though. Here's a couple of lineup scenarios I think could play out.

1. Competitive

LF Matsui
CF Bernie
RF Crosby
1B Tino
2B Cano
SS Escalona
3B A-Rod
C Posada
DH Sierra

2. Rest-oriented

LF Lawton
CF Womack
RF Crosby
1B Phillips
2B Cano
SS Escalona
3B Bellhorn
C Nieve
DH Matsui

588.   mikeplugh
Looking at the 1st lineup, I think I should qualify it by saying that A-Rod, Posada, Matsui and the other (semi) regular players would likely only play into the 5th or 6th before opting for a younger group. Kind of a 2-3 at bat chance to put the lights out on Schilling and the Sox before giving way to Bellhorn, Nieves, Lawton, and the younger kids.

589.   Stormer Sports
We will play Anaheim. Not to worry about the Halos boys. We will win tomorrow, or the Indians will, assuring a one game playoff for Boston, which they will likely win. If we lose and Cleveland loses, the Sox go to Chicago.

I just don't see all unfolding to get Cleveland in. They have to win tomorrow, and win at Fenway the next day. They had a great year but are sputtering, and they would have to face the Red Sox at Fenway.

It seems to me that the Yankees will face the Angels, and the Sox will face the Sox. I'd bet on it.

590.   mikeplugh
Stormer,

Not sure if I'm reading you wrong, but to clarify....

The Indians must win tomorrow AND the Red Sox must lose for the playoff to occur. If the Sox win they're in. If the Tribe loses and the Sox win, tough beans for Cleveland.

I hope we take care of our half of that equation, because I'd love to see Coco Crisp, Jhonny Peralta, Ben Broussard, and Victor Martinez get their crack at Matt Clement on 3 days rest. We should only be so lucky. Go Yanks.

2005-10-02 01:49:45
591.   mikeplugh
I meant to say....If the Tribe wins and the Sox win it makes no difference. The Sox eliminate Cleveland simply by virtue of their own victory.

Mike, I like your "competitive" lineup. Posada should be pretty well-rested, what with getting every RJ start off. Getting a chance to play with less pressure on might do him good. As long as he doesn't get Varitekked again.

I would DH Matsui, though. He won't want to miss the game entirely, but he could probably use some rest.

And yes, leave A-Rod in. Give those Beantowners a look at what a real MVP looks like. ;-)

593.   mikeplugh
Randy...

I would like to DH Matsui also. It's a rare opportunity to do so with Sheff, Giambi, and Jeter resting. Not sure how Torre will play this one.

I'm guessing that the pitching will determine everything. We may get half a game of competitive hitters, but it will ultimately be up to Wright, Leiter, Mendoza, Felix Rodriguez, Embree, and maybe Mariano if the game is saveable at the end.

594.   Shaun P
PeteyNice, thanks for putting it much better in 584 than I did above!

Re: today's lineup, at some point I'm pretty sure I heard Torre mention that he'd do what most of his vets wanted - ie, if Jeter wants to play today, Jeter plays. I hope the slightly banged-up crew (Cap'n, Sheff, and Giambi) are rested - giving us mike's 'competitve' lineup, very nice! - but I bet Jeter and Sheff see some action today. Not a full game, but at least 5 innings.

Of course, if Bernie ends up managing, who knows what will happen? IIRC, Sierra managed the last game last year - here was the lineup:

1. Jeter ss
2. Rodriguez 3b
3. Sheffield rf
4. Matsui lf
5. Williams cf
6. Giambi dh
7. Olerud 1b
8. Cairo 2b
9. Navarro c
Halsey p

Except for Navarro catching, I think that was the standard lineup at the end of the year. Note also that most of the regulars didn't play the 2 previous games.
