Baseball Toaster Bronx Banter
Help
Gettin' All Mavericky
2008-10-16 12:53
by Cliff Corcoran

Joe Maddon has taken a team that was the worst in the majors a year ago and brought them to within one game of the World Series, but with a chance to win that one game tonight, he's swapped out his best starter in favor of the one who gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings in Game 2 . . . and it's the right move. Now that's mavericky! Of course the Rays may lose tonight, but they might have lost anyway like they did the last time they faced Daisuke Matsuzaka, and now they're more likely to win Game 6. My preview's up on SI.com.

And since I've got SNL in my LCS, here's a little something for NL fans.

I didn't really see it as a huge risk — like you said, why burn a better starter when they may not hit Dice-K too well anyway...?

Sox blogs, of course, are in a froth. It's 2004 all over again!

2 I'm not terribly fond of the violent anti-intellectualism in that sketch, but the pomposity of Will and other like him certainly deserves a good poke. Besides, I absolutely love quiz show question, "What was it not unlike?"

SNL's best-ever baseball sketch was one I haven't been able to track down anywhere: a pseudo-documentary with Billy Crystal and Christopher Guest as two old Negro Leaguers, The Rabbit and The King. It included a brief appearance by Yogi Berra, and a hilarious description of Smelt Night.

4 Of all the classic Cheers scenes from over the years, that one ranks right up there with the best. Thanks for sharing, I haven't seen it in years.

Come to think of it, didn't Trebek appear in the last scene at the bar too?

change of plans for me this evening and i actually get to watch the entire game. what a fantastic start!

dice-klay goes full on aki, who hit a clean single to right. upton hits his 6th homer of the PS! another shot that landed and rolled on top of the wall. this was atop the monster.

2-0 Rays, after 2 batters. pena shows bunt as a bluff at the first pitch. hmmmm...?

nice pitch. pena down on strikes.

keep it going, tampa! make it stand, kaz!

BJ Upton is amazing.

Someone mentioned, in another thread, that TB was due for a regression, because of the play of hitters like Floyd, Hinske, etc. Perhaps so - but whoever that was did not include, in their calculation, that Upton is due for much improvement, and Longoria missed two months (in the minors, and then hurt).

The Yanks have no hitters with their upside, unless Cano shocks us all.

upton hit 9 homers in 531 ab's. in the postseason, he has 7 in just about 500 fewer at-bats. amazing. thing is, his postseason play is more indicative of his talent than this past season. yeah, he's due for improvement on his numbers. he and his brother are gonna be scary for years to come...

29 that rule is sooo true. blue note from the late 50's to mid-60's and you can't go wrong.

i stayed away from Idle Moments b/c i'm not a fan of Al Harewood on drums. but duke pearson is on it and bobby hutcherson is playing vibes. i had a marimba recording session today, so i was in a mallet mood.

yeah, duke pearson isn't a leader a lot. i have only one of his cd's - Wahoo, from '64 - and it's really good. i figured, what the hell, i'll try this one. freddie hubbard, james spaulding, stanley turrentine and grady tate are all on it. it's from 1967.

on the johnny griffin, i wanted A Blowing Session, but they didn't have it. for Lee Morgan, i wanted The Rajah, w/ Hank Mobley, but they didn't have it, so i got this since Hank was on it. i was also hoping to get the Sonny Clark Trios.

This Rays team is exciting to watch, I don't get how ratings are down and people aren't fixated on them. Their manager is lighthearted dude, he looks like he works in IT and not MLB. Change we can believe in...

I just read VORP 1 Billion in the clutch, otherwise known as ARod around these parts, is starting to see Madonna and trying to keep it on DL. He left CRod for Madonna, I guess trying to find one of the living and breathing golden girls wasn't one of his options.

45 Why? I love that honesty. Isn't that we are always yelling about? That why don't these high paid cry babies say the truth, they sign with the team with the most money. So when ARod signs with the Rangers you believe that bs about, "it's not about the money"?

I find that refreshing and the weird thing is that he doesn't take himself seriously, it kind of adds levity to it all.

I know when I'm looking for a job and company A is offering me 1.5 Million and company B is offering 750K, then guess where I'm gonna sign? So why do we think these athletes are anything but 'just like us', just like 'joe the plumber'.

In case you were wondering, I make the average of those two numbers. Just in case you were wondering....you know...I'm RICH!!!

I've been thinking about the "pitching wins championships" mantra, which I think has gotten overdone. The Rays have pretty good pitching, but they're winning this series by virtue of pounding the crap out of the ball.

Granted, they haven't won a championship yet, but it still suggests that there's more than one way to score more runs than the other guy.

54 OK, so what's there to be bothered about Manny? He has no off the field drama, he mashes, he takes plays off and is aloof.

I can see you getting frustrated when he's jogging to first on slowly hit ball to 3rd. However, when he's in the batters box that's why you watch him.

I'm not dismissing the fact that he doesn't hustle, I criticize ARod but I can't deny I am glad to see him run hard 100% of the time to first. But if I were given a choice, have ARod be the difference maker in 7 games or run hard 100% of the time then guess which one I'm choosing?

I'm not saying that having Manny automatically makes you a difference maker by X games, all I'm saying is that you pay him to hit. I'm not going to complicate it and make Manny something he's not, the poster boy for hustle.

Even with all that said, I hope the Yanks don't sign him.

Just packed a fresh bowl if you want what I'm having. *wink*wink.

Joe Maddon managed a worse game than Joe Torre ever did. This game hangs squarely around his neck.

What the FUCK is the job of a manager if not to pull incompetent pitching from the game before they blow it?

141 i won't watch the WS if they come back now to win the LCS...would be excruciating with the Fox broadcast..this could CRUSH a young team like Tampa..

"OldYanksFan :Really nice to see Papa take a beating in the Red Sox last game of the year."

A beating? He came in with 2 on and no outs, gave up 1 hit. He kept them in the game. Brilliant move by francona.

Exactly how old are you?
