Baseball Toaster was unplugged on February 4, 2009.
Joe Maddon has taken a team that was the worst in the majors a year ago and brought them to within one game of the World Series, but with a chance to win that one game tonight, he's swapped out his best starter in favor of the one who gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings in Game 2 . . . and it's the right move. Now that's mavericky! Of course the Rays may lose tonight, but they might have lost anyway like they did the last time they faced Daisuke Matsuzaka, and now they're more likely to win Game 6. My preview's up on SI.com.
And since I've got SNL in my LCS, here's a little something for NL fans.
Sox blogs, of course, are in a froth. It's 2004 all over again!
I thought of this oldy but goody.
Who are 3 people who have never been in my kitchen.

Come to think of it, didn't Trebek appear in the last scene at the bar too?
dice-klay goes full on aki, who hit a clean single to right. upton hits his 6th homer of the PS! another shot that landed and rolled on top of the wall. this was atop the monster.
2-0 Rays, after 2 batters. pena shows bunt as a bluff at the first pitch. hmmmm...?
nice pitch. pena down on strikes.
keep it going, tampa! make it stand, kaz!
Someone mentioned, in another thread, that TB was due for a regression, because of the play of hitters like Floyd, Hinske, etc. Perhaps so - but whoever that was did not include, in their calculation, that Upton is due for much improvement, and Longoria missed two months (in the minors, and then hurt).
The Yanks have no hitters with their upside, unless Cano shocks us all.
let's go Kaz!
In 32 AB, 0 HR, 1 RBI, 0.161 0.316 0.258 0.574 OPS
The other fear is that some other part of his body breaks down.
16 thealarmis, you're everywhere!
how great to see the Sox get a whipping like this!
just trying to continue moving. after my studio session today, i cleaned my pad like a madman. then, i picked up some items at target. when he when in with the dr, i went to border's and just dropped a C-Note on jazz cd's. now, i'm catching up at the toaster and other baseball sites.
GO RAYS!!!
G-damn Fox! Ortiz "not particulary successful" according to Chip. Thanks, Mr.AnnouncerMan.
on a happier topic, what cds you pick up?
got a half-dozen blue not RVG series that i didn't have and replaced my Oliver Nelson Blues & The Abstract Truth cd-r and tape.
BN pickups from today:
Grant Green - Idle Moments
Duke Pearson - The Right Touch
Larry Young - Unity (total classic!)
Lee Morgan - Volume 2:Sextet (w/ Hank Mobley!)
Grachan Moncur III - Evolution
Johnny Griffin - Introducing
pena w/ a 2-run jack. 4-0 RAYS!!!
WOW!!! back-to-back. longoria clears the monster.
i LOVE it! 5-0.
i hope the week off doesn't cool the kids down too much.
this is a joy to watch : )
i stayed away from Idle Moments b/c i'm not a fan of Al Harewood on drums. but duke pearson is on it and bobby hutcherson is playing vibes. i had a marimba recording session today, so i was in a mallet mood.
yeah, duke pearson isn't a leader a lot. i have only one of his cd's - Wahoo, from '64 - and it's really good. i figured, what the hell, i'll try this one. freddie hubbard, james spaulding, stanley turrentine and grady tate are all on it. it's from 1967.
on the johnny griffin, i wanted A Blowing Session, but they didn't have it. for Lee Morgan, i wanted The Rajah, w/ Hank Mobley, but they didn't have it, so i got this since Hank was on it. i was also hoping to get the Sonny Clark Trios.
I just read VORP 1 Billion in the clutch, otherwise known as ARod around these parts, is starting to see Madonna and trying to keep it on DL. He left CRod for Madonna, I guess trying to find one of the living and breathing golden girls wasn't one of his options.
Go Rays (for now)!!!
But.....Go Yanks in 2009!!!!
he was constantly professional during that strikeout and walk back to the dugout.
I wonder where Varitek will be next year.
Whoops. No fat lady yet but I can't help it.
"I just want to go home and spend some time with my family. I want to see who is the highest bidder. Gas is up and so am I."
he also called himself a "five-tool player". wow...
43 we can use that quote here when it's late at night and we're posting! : )
i think manny wants to pass Mays on the homer list...
I find that refreshing and the weird thing is that he doesn't take himself seriously, it kind of adds levity to it all.
I know when I'm looking for a job and company A is offering me 1.5 Million and company B is offering 750K, then guess where I'm gonna sign? So why do we think these athletes are anything but 'just like us', just like 'joe the plumber'.
In case you were wondering, I make the average of those two numbers. Just in case you were wondering....you know...I'm RICH!!!
7k's. Real nice.
kaz at 7 k's, 2 hits, no runs thru 6...
Granted, they haven't won a championship yet, but it still suggests that there's more than one way to score more runs than the other guy.
I can see you getting frustrated when he's jogging to first on slowly hit ball to 3rd. However, when he's in the batters box that's why you watch him.
I'm not dismissing the fact that he doesn't hustle, I criticize ARod but I can't deny I am glad to see him run hard 100% of the time to first. But if I were given a choice, have ARod be the difference maker in 7 games or run hard 100% of the time then guess which one I'm choosing?
I'm not saying that having Manny automatically makes you a difference maker by X games, all I'm saying is that you pay him to hit. I'm not going to complicate it and make Manny something he's not, the poster boy for hustle.
Even with all that said, I hope the Yanks don't sign him.
Just packed a fresh bowl if you want what I'm having. *wink*wink.
Crazy personality or no, I'm gonna miss that dude. Enjoy playing for the Orioles, Manny!
Instead we'll end up with Jason Varitek. Fantastic.
Oh, is there a baseball game on? ;-)
Go RAYS!
And I'm stickin' to my Labatt Blue for tonight.
I'll take the Rays going to the World Series which also shuts up all the Yankee haters who are clamoring for a salary cap.
(this is so sweet)
Manny a better hitter then ARod? Absolutely. More clutch? Yeah. But ARod ain't a bad hitter. When you consider defense and speed on the bases, how many more runs/yr is Manny worth over ARod?
It is so much fun to watch.
crap. that sucks. shoulda brought in the lefty. fenway awakens. still don't think we need to worry. but i might need the mute button if caray keeps it up...
I believe in the mute button.
If there's anyone who annoys me more than Pedroia, it's Youkilis.
You throw the ball. You hit the ball.
You catch the ball. You got that?!"
http://www.japanprobe.com/?p=591
you over here too, Yankee23?
officially mute button time. rays better pull this out. if they don't, we all know what that means...boston runs the table and that's that.
c'mon tampa, get it together, damnit!!!
how 'bout - like a bunch of fucking scumbag asshole muthafuckin' pieces o' dog shit? yeah, i think that describes the shit sox MUCH more accurately!
mark kotsay? christ.
and boston has the heart of the order coming up in the 9th. this is brutal. : /
Damn, Boston is going to run the table.
shit, don't lose it now, tampa. heart of the order coming up... : /
He's panicking in there.
ugh. fuckface is up again.
wow, nice play bartlett. holy shit!
this game is making me have vertigo...
Sigh.
i still don't see the rays winning another game this series...
What the FUCK is the job of a manager if not to pull incompetent pitching from the game before they blow it?
that said, i hope the Rays pull it out. that way i can watch the WS on mute AND listen to johnny griffin! : )
A beating? He came in with 2 on and no outs, gave up 1 hit. He kept them in the game. Brilliant move by francona.
Exactly how old are you?
