Baseball Toaster was unplugged on February 4, 2009.
It is a muggy day here in the Bronx. The sun is trying to come out and when it does the sky turns a lighter shade of grey. Not exactly autumn weather. The Yanks send Carl Pavano out there today to serve it up to the first-place Rays. Me, I'm going to the movies, gunna check out the Joel and Ethan Coen's new comedy, another caper about a bunch of bumbling idiots. Sounds about perfect. Hitting an 11:00 a.m. show and will be back to catch most of the game.
Thread away, if you dare.
Hey, even if these are sad times, at least there is baseball today. It'll be really sad in a couple of months when football, hockey and hoops are all we've got on our plate.
So as Aaron Gleeman says, Happy Baseball.
2009 is coming.
We have work to do.
That should be grounds for immediate dismissal of whomever makes that decission.
I still think they'll offer him arbitration.
Even though the Yankees need Toronto to lose in order to pass them in the standings I still just can't root for Boston to win.
guess i will just have to enjoy the jerks at they gym getting so ticked off at paul byrd yesterday.
Yay! Bye Carl! Later! Sayanara! Don't let the door hit ya, etc! See ya! Hasta! Farewell! Happy trails!
I suspect the only reason this happened is that the season is basically over.
.306/.369/.419
not bad following a Podsednikian first half line of
.284/.345/.395
"Sometimes I let the team down," Cano said. "Ninety-nine percent of the time I play hard. It's kind of frustrating not helping the team, and he's right."
I'm not sure he'll make 4000 either. In fact, he probably won't, but he sure seems to have as good a chance as anyone, no?
He should certainly get well past 3500, and that's amazing enough.
As to his "steep decline," it seems pretty agreed that getting plunked in the hand set him back a good two months. And he still managed to stay above .280. Pretty impressive, if you ask me.
Still, I'm ready to sarcastically celebrate the Yanks being eliminated from contention; if you think about it this way, there a few players on this team that have never NOT played in the postseason. That's amazing when you consider how long they've played. It's sad, but at the same time, I'd like to honor that achievement somehow.
