If someone told me in March that a matchup of the Yankees' and Twins' best starters on June 1 would pit Darrell Rasner against Nick Blackburn, I'd have thought they were crazy, but that's exactly the case this afternoon as 26-year-old rookie Blackburn (4-3, 3.39 ERA) faces off against 27-year-old Rasner (3-1, 1.80 ERA).

Blackburn will be making his first career start against the Yankees. Rasner, who was the Yankees best pitcher in May, will be looking to keep things going in June. Rasner has given the Yankees a minimum of six innings in each of his first six starts, and after last night's extra-inning win, the Yankees will want him to go deep again today, though Mark Feinsand reports that Scott Patterson has been called up off his own strong May to add a fresh arm to the Yankee bullpen. Morgan Ensberg, who was hitting .164/.239/.164 since April 15, was designated for assignment to make room for Patterson.

Rasner has allowed just one run in his last 13 innings, though that one was enough to get him the loss in his last start, which the Yankees lost to the Orioles by an eventual final of 3-1. Today his support features Wilson Betemit at first base with Jason Giambi getting the day off and, as has been the standard pairing, Chad Moeller behind the plate.

Guys, this is OUR month. we're now over .500 for the first time in a damn long time. We had a winning May -- hooray. I really think the worst is behind us and despite taking on some water, the ship's still afloat and only 5.5 games from our favorite port of call.

It all continues today. we're 7-2 since I somewhat unboldly predicted we'd go 13-6. That means we only have to go 6-4 and I now think we can do better than that (although Toronto makes me nervous).

LET'S GO YAN-KEES!

I'm so glad that Boston and Tampa play next week. Either way we are the winners of that series.

I really want to know if Chicago and TB are competition for the PS. I always root against the Red Sox, because that's just plain fun. I've had fun watching Detroit and Cleveland scuffle, feeling they were our main competition for the WC, if needed. But do I need to ACTIVELY root against the White Sox and TB? (I mean, man... that's a lot of energy).

3 The Chisox, IMO, are playing way over their collective heads. I'll be rooting for them today. There's too much talent in that division for them to win. I'm not sure the Rays are a mirage-- but I still think they'll fade.

ensberg was a decent gamble (what's 1.75 mil between friends) but it's good to see them cut bait ... i wonder if lane will get a shot and if he's at least a decent option off the bench

5 I'd like to see them cut bit on Latroy Hawkins and call up another kid. Giese would be a good choice because he can start and (presumably) could be a long reliever.

4 the thing about the rays is that they've got sooo many options in the minors, especially with pitching that they can conceivably keep bringing up relatively fresh arms ... and their hitters haven't really exceeded reasonable expectations (well, except for navarro) ... i won't be surprised to see TB fighting for the WC all year long

4 I'd like to agree with you concerning the Rays, but they have a lot of good young talent and got a good start this year; they may be this year's Rockies for all we know.

I will guess Melky, at .265 .320 .403 .723, gets a bit of a pass because of his defense. However, at some point, below average defense and a .269 .321 .365 .686 line is REALLY hurting the team. Yes Derek! I'm looking at you. And Robbie... I can't even bear to post your numbers.
2008-06-01 11:18:02
12.   Jeb
The problem is they've never been in this position before. I don't know what they'll do under the heat of a pennant race. Percival just went on the DL. If they get 1/4 of our injuries that could upset the apple card. Also, they have to play both US and the Red Sox....tough

by the way, I hope we take LOTS of pitches today and get into their pen. GRIND

It's strange, but when I look at Matsui's swing, it looks like his swing-the-gate style is almost always making contact on the top of the ball. Of course, when he does hit it on the screws, he usually drives it hard...

20.   Yankees Brasil
That's so frustrating, Rasner threw a beautiful curve that should have been strike 3, instead the ump calls it a ball and then the hitter ends up with a single. The umps have been horrible this year.

I do believe that if there was a real ump with a decent strike zone, Rasner would have given up only 1ER today.

The bottom of the Yanks lineup is not fearsome. As you were.
2008-06-01 12:54:58
139.   Just fair
Boy, I was in a bar in Annapolis that night the Yanks were playing the Sox about 6 years ago. Bryce Florie got absolutely smoked by a Ryan Thomspon line drive. He was never the same.

140 you are right betemit would have had a basehit- different inning if he hustles.

Also- gotta put something on with catcher boy up there. Hit and run preferably. That situation just screamed double play.

Melky was at the rubber warning track to pick up the ball, slipped to his but, quickly tried to throw to Abreu from his fanny, and tossed it over his head.
Too bad Patterson can't make his 1st appearance under a little less duress. But if he does well, good on him.

If Matsui wouldn't be pulling out ALL THE TIME he would be so much of a better hitter. Grant it he is already a very good hitter. But if he would not lean away and roll over so often he would be driving the gaps and getting hits up the middle. I am so sick of his and Cano's weak groundballs to secondbase.
