Curt Schilling went out and pitched a money game for the Red Sox today, ending Boston's modest losing streak at four. The Red Sox narrowly won, 1-0 and Schilling had a no-hitter through 8.2 innings. The Yankees need a big money game from Mike Mussina tonight to build on their very modest two-game winning streak. No excuses boys, this is one you have to win if you want us to start taking you seriously again.

Let's Go Yan-kees!

Alex, did you tell Joe? He's got a house money line-up in place.
Okay, okay, no excuses.

No excuses. Contreras is good but he's not great. Screw that, this is a game they need to win in order to show us something. They need to field well and run the bases well and fuggin hit the ball.

In the last thread standuptriple had the idea for a commemorative baseball card honoring the two guys who have spoiled Schilling no-hitters. Well, here you go:

no excuse to let contreras through 2 with only 23 pitches. need to have a big, long inning.
2007-06-07 17:32:30
11.   RIYank
It looks promising, with Contreras missing the zone by so much and then our hitters getting a few good cuts. But, no hits and low pitch count. We need action next inning, with Cairo and Nieves starting things off! (A bunt and a walk, maybe?)

No no-no for the Moose tonight. Oh well, at least we didn't have to wait on tenterhooks until the bottom of the ninth...

11 agreed. though in this alternatve universe, moose has only thrown like 12 pitches so far.

Turning that DP would have gotten him out of the second with a total of 13 pitches! 16 isn't bad, though, I'll take it.

Jeez, the WSox' lead-off guy has an OBP of .192. Someone should explain this game to Ozzie G.

Hey, we have enough banterers for a rally. Uh, it may have to wait until the seventh inning, though. Cripes, Bobby did a good job with the pitch count but A-Rod and Matsui didn't get the message, apparently. Longer at-bats might have gotten Contreras close to his limit. Now it looks like he could go eight.

Yeah, Brackman. I have no idea, none at all.

Why pull Moose after 72 pitches and a little trouble. Unless you believe that the Yankees can't score anymore in this game, why burn the bullpen this early? Moose is a big boy. He can give up a run or two at this point in the game and count on the bats to pick him up. It's just another puzzling use of the pen.

Only one player from the pen makes any sense in this situation. Mariano Rivera. 7th inning, no one out, 1st and 3rd, one run game, highest leverage pitching situation you'll probably face, go Mo. Otherwise Moose is still your man.

90 Because he has been awful this year, and has not shown any sort of endurance. The single to Thome was pure luck, but Konerko ripped the ball. 80 pitches or not, he looked like he was running out of gas, especially the way he was relying exclusively on his curve (including two straight to Konerko, who was sitting on both). Now, this leaves the manager in a position to pull Moose maybe a batter or two too soon, or leave him in mayber a batter or two to late.

Seventh inning of a one-run game with the house money line-up, I would err on the side of caution and pull moose too soon rather than too late, and play batter-to-batter late inning baseball. If the score was 4-0, I leave him in.

But with a runner on 3rd and no one out, you're likely to give up the tying run anyway. You're grasping at straws to try and escape that with a K and a GIDP, so I stick with Moose for at least one more batter, unless it's Mo. If it works, you continue with Moose. If not, you go to the pen.

I'm not grasing at straws: I assume that either the BP or Moose will give up the run, but I calculate that the BP has the better chance of preventing the big inning, and indeed had the better (albeit slight) chance to prevent any runs from scoring. Leaving Moose in a batter too long probably means a 1-1 or 2-1 game with the BP coming in to clean up a similar mess (and give up more runs).

I love PeteAbe, and his blog is a great service to Yankee fans, but it's important to understand his style.

I think he gets fixated on a particular player or issue at a given time and is slow to re-examine his initial stance. He spends time defending it until the buzz wears off, he's proven wrong by action on the field, or something new comes up.

The only knock I have on his style is that he rarely attempts to pose both sides of a debate by framing the merits and demerits of the argument in question. If he has an opinion, he defends it over and over without exploring what might be worthy in the opposite point of view. The thing is, it's a blog not a newspaper article, so it's more chatter than journalism. Considering the forum is also important.

219 That's what so annoying here. Its not like Joe has a crappy BP and there's nothing he can do. He continually goes to the worst options. Farnsworth makes lots of money, and throws hard. Too bad he walks everyone and then gives up doubles every time. Bruney and Britton are much, much better. Use them in games like this, and let Kyle pitch 6 innings of a blowout. I don't care if his arm falls off.

Normally I'd be praying that Alex not strike out, that he shorten his swing and just try to hit the ball up the middle, but he's been swinging so well of late (and Mo looks sharp) I think he should just let'er rip.

This is exactly the game the Yankees had been losing, so it's nice to see them take command. The one lesson to be learned, however, is Farnsworth can not be your "8th" inning guy. He must be behind Proctor and Bruney in the pecking order, and quite frankly, behind Britton as well. It would have been a shame had Farns blwon this game.

386 True, but the combination of sensible bullpen management based on pitch count (for once), and a save opportunity make it a no brainer. It's smart for reason #1, and a dead lock for #2. #2 is more to get Mo back in the feeling of success, in my opinion.

390 Hey, I'm feelin' ya. I have a dear friend (diehard Yanks fan forever) who is pushing this on me every day: Basically, screw this year, trade everyone on the roster over 28 years old not named Jeter, play the kids, and have a fun .500 team in '08, then bring in a few right vets for '09 and the run begins anew. Kinda like '94-95-96 all over again. I'm not down with that yet, but there were a few days there recently it started to make sense ;-)

If this squad is within 7 by the break, I'm feelin' pretty good...

The one thing we shouldn't lose sight of, btw, is Abreu.

Alex had to go and upstage him (the bastard) but he's the big story of this game, with Moose and Mo close seconds.

Can Moose continue to have success throwing what seemed to be nothing but breaking balls?

But Mo and Abreu are clearly back, and that (needless to say) is huge news.

2007-06-07 20:57:40

Suzyn reports that the locker room is all about Torre's 2000th win. Torre claims he didn't realize it. Jeter and Mo certainly did. And they're beaming, both of them, more because of the win than because of Torre.

How did Jeter score two runs when he didn't even start? That's impressive.

405 Heh heh heh.

No, technically, we're not, it just feels that way sometimes.

Or maybe it's because I'm so damned sore from playing softball yesterday. I went 3-3 with 3 runs scored, incidentally!

I did have an outfield blunder, though--I overran a ball or something. I ran and ran and somehow the ball managed to hit off my glove. That was unpleasant.

I also stumbled coming around third, being way too aggressive. That felt foolish, but I blame the beer for that one.

:)

WE WON AGAIN!!!! I've never been so happy to win three in a row.

417 The highlights will be fun. The game was harrowing for a while. We couldn't hit Contreras, and then Farns wanted Chicago to win. Besides that it was great, esp. the top of the eighth, the top of the ninth (in spades), and Mo.

I'll miss the ole sourpuss when he's gone.

You pitched a fine game, Mike, cheer up!

"Not one, one doesn't do it. Ten or twelve, that'll do it. We actually look like a baseball team now, last part of this trip...except for the first day here when we were still asleep..."

"Yeah we feel good for him [i.e., Torre] he's been managing a long time..."

Man, it would have been a real let-down if we had lost a low-scoring game after Schilling gave Boston the 1-0 win. Instead, our win is actually much better, more encouraging.

If Cashman has anything but pretzels in his head, he'll deal Farnsworth to some team, who like the Yankees, believe they will finally be the team to harness that fastball. Alas they won't, but at least we'll have that bat on the bench. Few things are true all the time in baseball, but teams will always take a chance on a guy who throws 97 MPH. Hey Scott Thornton, how you doin?

430 Great point. There are no lack of professional sports franchises out there that feel only they have what it takes to rehabilitate a common felon, so why is a fastball such a hurdle?

If Cash can pull off a 'David Justice' kinda deal for Farnswhackus before the deadline, I just might back burner my personal campaign to have Stick Michael run the show again. Just sayin'...

I think he has to do it. He has value above what he is actually worth because even today's GM cant look past the fastball and actually see the frightened misguided creature below. He belonged in Atlanta, where they cannot even sell out playoff games, and the only pressure he will feel will be coming from the barometer.

The last this I want is to se him on the mound in the playoffs.

436 WHEN we get to the playoffs, rest assured, Joe will give him the '96 Kenny Rogers treatment* — unless we're up or down by 16 runs. Unless he channels 1988 Orel Hershiser, Farns will be on a milk carton come Sept/Oct.

Footnote: When we traded Rogers to the A's in '97, the 'player to be named later' was the .203 hitting Scott Brosius. That kinda worked out OK, I think...

All right, guys, here's where I think we are: back to square one, the beginning of the season.

Our offense is now where we thought it would be and I feel confident with it (knock on wood).

I think Melky should be the full-time centerfielder, period. As a long-term project, I think he's capable of being a .300 hitter, but it'll take a lot of work. His defense is excellent. For this year, if he can hover around .270, I'll be happy.

Cano's being Cano, and if his defensive lapses can be remedied, I'm confident in him.
His defense too, is excellent. We should get about .300 out of him this year, more if he stays hot like he did last year.

Abreu's a career .300 hitter and he seems to figured things out, so he should remain consistent.

First base is a question mark, but that's ok, if these other guys hit, we've more than enough offense to win if the team is otherwise sound.

Which brings us to the bullpen, and square one.

Anyone out there that might help us out? Anyone we can trade for quality relief pitching?

Chien-Ming, Andy, Clemens, Moose and the Yankee Clippard are a quality 1-4.

Moose should now be considered a 5-inning pitcher, like Clemens, but they can each dominate for five innings on any given night.

If we could just find maybe one quality 2-inning guy, we'd be in business.

Post hoc, ergo Proctor hoc will have to suffice as the 8th inning guy but Joe will have to learn to use him in a less formulaic way.

Sometimes we'll have to improvise, but man, Joe's gotta work with us on this one.

Farns mops up.

We need that Brendan Donnely, Mike Timlin kind of guy.

Anyone know where we might find such a man?

2007-06-07 21:55:58
440.   weeping for brunnhilde
432 I don't think this team needs a hitter nearly as much as it needs bullpen help.

That's priority number one, don't you think?

2007-06-07 21:57:57
441.   weeping for brunnhilde
If we make Farns the mop-up guy now, will that lower his trade value?

I mean, if we're looking for that sucker, than it shouldn't matter, right, they'll take him anyway because they'll be convinced they (and they alone) can turn him into their closer.

442.   weeping for brunnhilde
Hey, here's a crazy thought.

Do you think Alex is playing so well this year because he likes to be the stud?

You think maybe he's glad Sheff is gone?

Or something, I don't know.

It seems to me we're looking at a different player this year.

Right. I just don't like most trades for "quality relief." I mean, everyone needs relief pitching, and most of them are bad. I mean if a team actually has a quality relief pitcher, what the hell could we offer them?

I think Farny for a bat can be done with the Yankees on the better end of it. A trade for relief pitching, I am far more dubious of. Unless we can go out and get someones closer, which we can't, I just don't think we will get value back on a trade like that, unless we give too much up to get what amounts to a mediocre to bad pitcher.

Did you guys know we've outscored opponents 315-278?

Tampa Bay, for their part, have been outscored 344-273, and yet they're only a half a game behind us.

What does this tell us?

443 Yeah, what.

Not Farns, then, you're saying?

Shoot.

:)

Yeah, point taken. How 'bout getting a bat and parlaying that into someone's closer?

Damn.

If we don't get this bullpen situation straightened out, all the bats in China won't get us to where we want to be.

To be honest, I think he has finally become a man while playing in NY. I mean he's only 32, he wouldn't be the first to take a while to reach his conclusions about life. Having a wife and kids doesn't make you a man, and he's learned that.

He is just saying look, this his who I am, I'm not beating my wife, raping young women or driving drunk at 100 MPH, and I really don't give a fuck what any of you think. And more importantly I think he actually believes it to be true. Thanks Reggie!

439 Right there with you on the offense, even without Giambi at this point.

I think if Melky plays everyday, his hitting will come around and .300+ is on the horizon. On D, his routes have improved, and the arm is there. Johnny just lost his job ;-) I like him at DH. A lot. With this lineup, we don't need a slugger there. Just someone to keep the line movin' — and Damon can do that in a number of ways, including placing one in the cheap seats...

Moose: Yeah. It seems like 4 or 5, then look out!

We need Mendoza II. I don't know who this guy is right now. I don't know if any team has one. Maybe give one of the kids a shot? I dunno.

Mendoza II, absolutely.

Yeah, maybe give one of the kids a shot--that's not a bad idea.

Hmmm...

Clippard, maybe?

Might he have more value to us in the pen, much like what the Mets have done with Heilman?

Wow, yeah. Because if Clippard could pitch effectively three or four days a week, he might be a huge asset.

Then we could play with house money, as it were, and get whoever to be the number five guy.

Hmmm...

448 The Yankee Clippard? Why not? Just maybe, one of these guys we're looking at for a 4th or 5th starter can fill that role. Mabye Farns can land us a #5 guy or a good prospect at 1B or C. All told, I don't think we're too far away from solving this puzzle...

449 Oh my God! Imagine if he really could land us said prospect. That would be great.

I'd say if we could get a catcher, that would be great, then we could think about transitioning Jorgie to first, maybe buy us some time until we find the 1B of the future.

450 Why not trade Cano for Armando Benitez to shore up the pen, put Jorgie back at second for a few years, give Nieves the chance to come into his own as an everyday player, and sign Rickey Henderson (before Boston does) so we don't have to pay Melky the big bucks one of these days.

Looking up when Ramiro pitched four days a week. Get back to you on that...

451 AAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Oh, man. I just had this terrible nightmare.

449 If we're moving a starter to the pen... how about Moose? Who's better suited for long relief right now?

I think the best thing to do right now, though, is to work on Quest and Henn. There's a decent chance that one of them can be a serviceable pitcher again.

452 Move Rainman to the pen? But he'd never know when he would be pitching, that would throw him off entirely and interrupt his crossword puzzles.
