Baseball Toaster Bronx Banter
Help
A Fresh Start
2007-05-07 13:56
by Alex Belth

Matt DeSalvo makes his big league debut on a crisp spring evening in the Bronx as the Bombers look to take the series from Seattle. Miguel Batista gets the nod for the M's. As usual, Pete Abe has the starting line-ups, plus the news the Kei Igawa has been demoted to the Land of Dunder-Mifflin.

Let's Go Yan-Kees!

OO-kay, seeing that I should try to be less irreverent and keep up with the spirit of things, I will try my best to keep things in perspective...

You and I both got saved by the new thread, huh Chyll?

Props to Igawa for going down - he had to agree, IIRC, because he's got a major league contract.

And, unless disaster strikes again, or DeSalvo gets bombed, looks like Camus (my nomination for DeSalvo's nickname) gets two starts, as Igawa can't come back for 10 days (barring injury). If DeSalvo does well, he could pitch May 18th vs the Mets and then again on the 23rd vs the Sox.

2 Aww, c'mon man... when I come around to Dodger Thoughts, do I say "The Dodgers are like barbacued broccoli heads to me?" or yell "Choi!" on a crowded thread? Let us commence in the sharing of York Peppermint Patties and regale in the various shades of blue >;)

3 Yes, I suppose we did at that. By the way, where's YFD wsporter? I think I finally figured out what his handle stands for... (and if he'd already explained it, I wasn't there for that one)

Of course, the Yankees wear blue. It's a very dark, navy blue, but distinctly blue. Just look at the Yankees website some time. It's quite blue.

[8] their away uniforms and their hats are what always stood out in my mind, i guess. those look pretty black. perhaps my mental associations as well had something to do with it.

yay for Proctor getting a four game suspension! Total rest!
2007-05-07 15:10:21

This could turn into a new bullpen strategy. Don't like how Joe overuses the pen? Throw at batters and get suspended. Instant bullpen rest.

The AP's claiming that Igawa was sent to Class A Tampa, not AAA Wilkes-Barre.
2007-05-07 15:18:30
14.   seamus
So, with Torre out for tonight, does that mean that we'll get see how Mattingly would handle the pen? Thoughts?

Or is it too much of a situation where Mattingly is just a proctor for Torre.

14 I kinda think Torre will let Donnie handle it, what with all the depth of managing experience they have in the infield alone. I suspect if anything, it's a Donnie Gator Production... I just hope that if DeSalvo is doing well that they leave him in to finish the seventh. Proctor's taken care of, but we still need a respite for the others.

Speaking of Yankee blue, did anyone notice that our hats looked lighter in color than normal in the game yesterday? They were similar in shade to the color of the Mariner hats. It looked like the hat supplier was trying to save money by using the same base hat for all the teams that use a dark blue hat. I always thought that our hats were a much darker blue than any of the other teams (hence the comment in 7). It was the first time that I had ever thought that our hats did not match the deep navy on the rest of our uniforms. I know that they made some changes to the hats this year so maybe that has something to do with it or maybe there is something wrong with my eyes...

6 Wish I could say where MFD was, Chyll, but I haven't seen him in a while either. wsporter, if you're reading this, speak up - we miss you!

I've always wondered what his handle meant myself; don't know if he ever explained it.

8 10 Way back in the day (that is, the 80s), they sold caps that were midnight blue, as opposed to navy - when the sun was shining, you could clearly tell it was blue. The rest of the time, it looked navy or black.

Yankees.com says the original pinstripes on the Highlanders' uniforms (they didn't last) were black.

IIRC, the Yanks also used a blue and orange color combo in the early 1910s.

2007-05-07 15:33:24
28.   Shaun P
23 Mark Connors, former Yanks pitching coach under Showalter, still has that job in Texas, IIRC.

If you saw a picture of Mark and Billy side-by-side, you couldn't confuse them. Billy is, shall we say, big.

I think we just have to face up to the fact that Doug-out is going to be playing on this team all season, and a hot streak in May that probably won't go past this month will cemement it...

I love reading the mailbag over at Yankees.com. Here's why:

Do you think it is too early in the season to start talking about trading Carl Pavano and one or two prospects to try to pull Johan Santana away from the Twins this year? It seems to me, if we can't get some pitching working here, we are not even going to sniff the playoffs.

177 All the players were shaking his hand, bumping fists, etc. Looked to me like it was "Congrats." Plus, in the minors this season he's only gone 6.

I'd have trotted him out there to start the 8th. But, consider, if he gets in a bit of trouble, then the relievers have no room for error. Maybe not a bad idea to get a "fresh" arm in to start the 8th.

And Mo goes for the ninth.

DEVESTATING LOSS!

Not only do they refuse to get a hit with RISP, but they suffer a horrendous call and Mariano has another poor outing. Coming off as a great a day as yesterday, you couldn't draw up a worse loss.

I also think it's time to move Giambi to the 3-hole and move Abreu down. He had another horrendous game and continues to hurt the team.

I'd love to go back and blame it all on that blown call at second base (it really was 3 feet, nearly as bad as the Knoblauch Air Tag), but it was Farnsy and Mo's job to pick up the team, and it didn't happen. Tough loss. At least the pen isn't overworked, though this certainly is more painful than a blowout.

355 I didn't watch most of the game, but I know that at least 2/3 of his outs were fly outs, a la Rasner or Karstens. That, 3 BB, and 0 K is a recipe for losing, so it remains to be seen if he can keep it up.

And I think the reasoning behin letting Mink bat were his 2 doubles in 3 AB, plus he's a contact guy against a strikeout pitcher, and Phelps is a strikeout hitter. I'm sure the lefty-righty idea came into play, as well, even though we all know Phelps is a better hitter against both. Still, Mink earned his place in the 9th, and given his game performance it was a toss up.

Let's look at the positives: the Yankee pitching, excepting the Friday stinker of course, has been superb lately. Hopefully Pettitte can keep it going tomorrow, against a much-better hitting Texas club...

In other news, Tyler Clippard is cruising. Seven more strong tonight. Don't need him at this rate, but nice to know. Plus he beat the Red Sox farm team, and that's a nice bonus.

And Tabata was 3-4 and raised his AVG to .294.

I hope the team can bounce back tomorrow. And I agree, it's time to move Bobby down in the lineup so A-Rod has somebody to drive in.
