From Ken Rosenthal's latest:

Maybe Yankees left-hander Randy Johnson is coming around. He has produced quality starts in four of his last five outings, and teammates are noticing his willingness to make adjustments; Johnson is pitching to both sides of the plate and becoming less predictable in his patterns. Johnson says he is watching more video than at any point in his career, and working as hard at his mechanics as he ever has before.

Well, that's good news. Too bad they couldn't give him more run support last night.

I hear Veras has been sent back down to Columbus without throwing a pitch. Kevin Reese has been called up, and will start tonight. Along with Bernie. Both Melky and Bubba are riding pine. That's what you get when you don't hit, I guess.

/Sarcasm on

Fantastic invention, that BETAmax machine, let's you watch video of yourself over and over with the push of a button. Much better than that old reel-to-reel projector, where you had to reload the reel to watch something again.

/Sarcasm off

I'm actually glad that Johnson is watching video and working so hard on his mechanics, I just wish he had been watching video from Day 1 in pinstripes!

1 Poor Kevin 'Gapper' Thompson - Reese is getting the shot KT should/could have had. Them's the breaks.

2 I really wonder if KT did something to annoy Torre. Some claim he had some disciplinary issues in Columbus.

Maybe he'll get another chance. They can call him up again in a couple of weeks.

I read Torre's starting Reese tonight as a sign of desperation.

I doubt Reese will play any. Maybe Thompson will come back up when his 10 days in the minors is done with.

Reese is in the lineup tonight:

Johnny Damon CF
Derek Jeter SS
Jason Giambi 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Jorge Posada C
Robinson Cano 2B
Bernie Williams RF
Kevin Reese LF
Mike Mussina P

Dear Gary Sheffield,

Get well soon.

Love,

P.S. Really soon. Have you seen the bottom third of the lineup lately?

2006-06-20 15:32:13

I have a feeling we'll be seeing Matsui back before Sheff.

And whether either will be the player they were before they were injured is another question.

Is anyone here at all interested in the College World Series? If so, do you know of a good place online to watch the games, a la MLB Gameday? Or at least play by play updated by inning?

10.   Jeteupthemiddle
I really believe that Thompson was just unlucky due to circumstance.

They needed the extra pitcher, so the extra position player had to go.

Since it hasn't been 10 days, he can't come back yet.

Luckily, it was Kevin Reese called up and not--GASP--Terrence Long.

2 There was a quote two or three starts ago about Johnson sitting in the clubhouse listening to his iPod.

I can just picture him sitting there staring at the iPod screaming "I'd like to hear Free Bird! Damnit Milky, you're young, why won't thing thing listen to me?"

Its not even that hes that old. He just doesnt strike me as a guy that enjoys technology.

2006-06-20 15:58:30
12.   randym77
10 But why wasn't Thompson played while he was up? He got only 11 ABs in the 18 days he was here. He caught everything that came anywhere near him, and hit pretty darned well:

.273 .429 .636 1.065

You'd think that would have gotten him more playing time.

On the bright side, Extra Innings isn't carrying the game. I am going to watch the Mets win and pretend they are are the Yankees.

Yikes, the bottom of our order is worse than KC's, ugh!

19 Gathright's career SLG (.291) is lower than his career OBP (.312). This season his numbers are even lower. Pass.

24.   Mattpat11
Was the umpire really screaming back at him? If so, he needs to be immediately fired. The precedent needs to be set. The umpires are NOT a part of the show.

You're right, we have to resign ourselves to the fact that we have "zip" at AA and AAA as many GM's have been quoted as saying, and we don't have the chips to move for a player like Gathright.

The only deals we can make are going to cash heavy, takking salry off a team with no playoff prospects, leaving guys like Griffey, or Schmidt, as our only real options.

I live in LA now and it is simply amazing to watch daily what a true farm system lokks like. They have more minor leaguers with talent playing in A ball and at Dodger camp in South America than we have on every one of our minor league rosters. It's pittiful, and not just the lack of talent caused by trades, the overall extraordinary incompetence that has accompanied the Yankees player draft for many years now. I'm sorry Brian C., but I don't think Torre should go, I think you should have been replaced years ago.

Our bats better wake up, or we're facing the reality of trotting out our 3 best pitchers and coming up with 3 devastating losses to mediocre teams...with the rump of the order and a big losing streak staring us in the face.

Delgado goes deep, at least there is one decent team in town. Nice to know they have three guys with more HR than Arod.
2006-06-20 16:28:35
31.   randym77
It should have been strike 3, third out.

It was clearly a strike. A lot of movement, and it fooled the ump. He called it a ball, which upset Moose. (I don't blame him.)

The next pitch is hit into the upper deck - 3-run homer.

Can we put Bubba in, and hope he hits one off the ump's cup like he did yesterday?

2006-06-20 16:29:40

60 Yeah, imagine if the Yankees called up Hughes, he pitches lights out, then they send him down while keeping Wright or Chacon in the rotation. That's not even a good analogy because Weaver doesn't have the injury/unpolished-ness concerns that Hughes does.

Perhaps they are just waiting to trade his brother. I can't imagine Jered will be in AAA for after the trade deadline, at the latest.

Never mind...that last post came in late, and I guess I got the answer to my question in the meantime...sigh.

And how come the Nats were te amazing comeback, high offense team against us, and suddenly revert to their pumpkin state against Boston?

That was a nice RBI by Bernie, but his weak defense also made that homer a 2-run homer instead of a singleton. :/

75 The thing with Reese is he's another in the seemingly endless string of career minor leaguers that this team seems to have. Crosby, Jones, Thompson, Reese, really, only Cabrera is any good and its sort of discouraging.

75 There was complaining that it should've been Thompson a while back (and I don't disagree although now the situation is different since KT was just sent down), but the point of my post was mainly a joke, not that it was that funny.

Does Mussina think David Bell is any good for some unGodly reason?

83 Probably has more to do with the teams they're facing, and less to do with the Nats, I'm afraid to say.

This sucks. If we had even a decent back up outfielder this wouldn't be an issue.

Nope, he's just back to trying to be so perfect with his pitches, that he bites off his nose to spite his face.

Bernie's defense is coming back to bite us.

Oh, is there a game tonight? I was just doing the USA Today crossword puzzle, you know, like Mussina, and I'm having a devil of a time with 8 Across. The hint is "killing us" RY_NHOW_R_ Any help?

94 There was some confusion and miscommunication on the play. Cano, Damon, and Bernie were all converging on the ball, and no one caught it. If Bernie picked it up on the hop he could have gotten the out, but he was waiting for Cano to do something. Finally Damon told Bernie to get it, and he did. Too late.

If it were Bubba in RF, he would probably have called Cano off and caught it.

91 I know, but they needed to give Melky a day off. Not too many other options but Bernie ans Reese.

Arrgh. A-Rod hits into a DP. That didn't help, Alex.

Sigh. One of my personal pet peeves, not being able to get a fly ball with a guy on 3rd and less than 2 outs.

I didn't, I figured he'd at least get a sac fly. Man is he a frustrating player.

And Steve Lombardi's stat about ARod's performance with his team behind two runs continues to sadly hold true...

I hate to say it, but I don't see this team scoring 3 more runs tonight. I hope they prove me wrong because I am ususally not this negative.

I'd like to see A-Rod's number with a runner on third. he actually seems pretty decent with a guy on second. But when he needs to hit one in the air, he without fail either pops out, grounds out or strikes out looking.

95 Thanks, me neither.

So now I'm watching comedian Robert Klein on "Centerstage." Hilarious. But I'm flipping around, and for some reason, Channel 9 is showing what must be a Yankees Classic. A-Rod's up, tight ballgame against the Phillies, and I figure something big is about to happen, but guess what? Hilarious.
