Death To Flying Things
2005-09-24 09:44
by Cliff Corcoran

Jason Giambi returns to the line-up today as Jaret Wright and Scott Downs face off at the Stadium. The MVP bats second, Giambi three, Cano down to seventh with Bernie and Bubba rounding it out as the Yanks look to make it six straight.

So, any guesses as to what flying object will strike Jaret Wright today?

Okay,it's a little after 2am and I've decided that sleep is overrated. I have a lecture to give this morning, but I can sacrifice a few hours of sleep for my Yanks.

These are the brutal days in Japan.

Nice start. How soon before Small comes in?
2005-09-24 10:15:27
3.   Rich
Wright's first inning stats are good, but he has struggled early lately.

Come on, Wright. Settle down.

There is no time to rest, these are our playoffs. There should be no let-up now. Grind, Mike, grind...

Yikes, Wright, get your shit together.

F'en Wright.

4 singles to lead off the game. Get Small ready...

Bad luck on that one. Shea sucks, except against us.

10.   Rich
Gawd, Matsui is awful defensively.
2005-09-24 10:19:39

And just like that we put the Red Sox back into the race.

Oh, my.

We can survive about 5 runs today. Any more than that and I fear we buy the farm for the day.

This is getting ugly, fast. 0 out.
2005-09-24 10:21:03

Calm down, the Yankees will win.

Wright hit again.

Matsui is an awful outfielder.

WOW...Wright has no luck.

2005-09-24 10:21:44
19.   mikeplugh
How does a guy get hit this many times. Is someone telling him to stay home?
2005-09-24 10:21:50
20.   Zack
Well, no surprise, today is the day the Yanks regress majorly. Our brilliant offseason signing, one of Torre's "warriors," stinks it up.

You know, Wright must have really slow reactions...

2005-09-24 10:21:59
21.   atc
at least he got an out
2005-09-24 10:22:25

He got hit on the right shoulder.

I blame Cliff. ;-)

2005-09-24 10:22:50

Keep it at 3 runs in the 1st and we'll get it back in short order.

24.   Cliff Corcoran
I feel terrible!
2005-09-24 10:23:14
25.   Zack
I really think it has less to do with luck and more with fielding. The bat, okay I give you that was freaky, but that last one was simply not getting his glove up
2005-09-24 10:24:00
26.   rbj
Jaret, take the "hit it here, win a suit" sign off your uniform.
Glad I'm going to miss the end of the game.
Go Orioles.

27.   yankz
Everyone but Hillenbrand has hit it hard. I think.
2005-09-24 10:24:22
28.   Zack
4-0, gotta keep it there
2005-09-24 10:26:20
29.   Cliff Corcoran
Hmmm. First five men reach base. Since Wright was hit with that ball, which would have been a single up the middle had it not hit him, he got three straight outs.

Is three the charm?

2005-09-24 10:26:42
30.   mikeplugh
Painful, but I have a feeling we'll see some runs on the board from the home team today. How about a good old fashioned 8-6 win?
2005-09-24 10:27:18
31.   Cliff Corcoran
That is, the other two hit-by-objects knocked him out of the game. Here's hoping this one knocked him into the game.

If this a 5 pitch inning, I'm gonna go out and commit a crime...

I can dig on that, Mike.

Wright blows. Remind me again why either Wang or Chacon has to go to the bullpen?
2005-09-24 10:28:36
36.   Dimelo
If Matsui makes the catch, it's 2 - 0.
2005-09-24 10:29:24
37.   Shaun P
Ugh. I guess Wright wasn't hurt too badly this time, huh?

I don't have the game on TV - is anyone warming up?

Those are moments Mats reminds me of Shemp...

I see Downs struggling a bit with location, but a big zone from the home plate ump. What do you see?
2005-09-24 10:30:59
40.   Cliff Corcoran
Ramone, neither of those guys is going to the bullpen, I'm not sure I know what you're talking about.

Wait a second...that at bat wasn't with a runner in scoring position and it wasn't after the 6th inning, so it obviously wasn't a clutch hit.

Giambi down on three pitches. Wondering if Torre should have put him back in lower in the order.

If that ball to Sheff was two more inches over the plate, that clears the wall.

Giambi hits lefties better than Tino this year.
2005-09-24 10:38:18

2005-09-24 10:38:57

Thanks, Rich 41.

Hopefully, Giambi will have learned something from his first at-bat. C'mon, Godzilla!

2005-09-24 10:39:00

Torre is a creature of habit. He was slow to move Giambi up in the lineup and he would be slow to move him back down.

Man, people really die on Torre's bench. When was the last time Woemack, Bellhorn, Phillips, or anyone else played. I know its a race and all, but those guys must be beyond rusty. Same thing with Mendoza/F-Rod
2005-09-24 10:42:42

2005-09-24 10:45:51
77.   Shaun P
True, Cliff, but ever since then . . .

Remember what a black hole 1B was last year?

This year, between Tino and Giambi, as 1B in 508 ABs, they have 39 HR, 107 RBI, 82BB, 102K, 143H, 19 2B, and have scored 83 runs. That's Mark Texeira-territory.

I see from Yahoo! that Wright is back to giving up singles . . . please tell me that someone is starting to warm up now.

2005-09-24 10:45:56
78.   mikeplugh
I didn't want Wright in this game when we sent Small to the pen. Small is better than Wright.
2005-09-24 10:46:15

2005-09-24 10:50:14
92.   mikeplugh
Now the game begins. We'll give up two more here to make it 6-2, but the Yanks will rally and Small will hold them to 1 more run over 5 innings. Gordon and Rivera will lock it down and we'll win it around the 8th inning.
2005-09-24 10:50:59
93.   Yankee Fan in Chicago
He threw one pitch out of 8 inside to Frankie C.

I mean if you can't challenge FC inside, something's wrong, no?

2005-09-24 10:51:30
94.   Shaun P
FWIW, on the postgame radio broadcast last night, Susyn or Sterling (I forget which) said Wright wanted very badly to pitch today, and wasn't the type of guy to say if he was hurt or not.

He's so bad - and I can't see him - I don't know how to tell if this is just a crappy performance, or if he is hurt. In either case, someone should knock some sense into him. If he is hurt, he damn well shouldn't be pitching in the middle of this race when the team has other (good) options available!

I'm leaning towards game over right now. 7 runs is too much. I think we lost this one fellas. Never say die, but we're bleeding pretty bad now.

And we are sleeping. Clearly this is a game that we are doomed to get smacked around in, which seems to happen once a week or so, excpet that its too late for something like that now!

Hey, not too long ago our bullpen gave up how many runs to the Blue Jays? Who says the Blue Jays won't return us the favor?

Maybe I'm more optomistic 'cause I haven't seen any of it, just read it online here.

And, because of this stupid saturday schedule, the Sox get to watch all of this and go into their game and be ready to catch that game

I'm not giving up. Wright's out, Small looks good. Cano will be sharp as tacks after that error; that's how it works with him. He'll lead the charge back.

We can come back. Small keeps it close, we score 12 today, I can feel it.

Small back to the rotation?

I'd like to see Wright go to the pen, if only because Small seems more durable.

yankz,

Well yea! Wright belongs in the pen, if anywhere.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but this one's done. Pull all the starters. At least they'll get the better part of a day off. Return rested for tomorrow.

I still can't believe youth over experience has us with Wright and not Pedro. Wright has one good year since 1997 and he gets how much, 12 mil., for 3 years. Cash, man you got to own up to that one.

No way I'd pull the starters now. No freakin' way.

atc,

That's all? 7 mil.?

Still, I just think if you can sign Pedro, you do it.

Stormer,

Why do you think it wsa Wright or Pedro? Pedro's contract was for approx. $30 million more.

It's only the 2nd inning. They have plenty of time to catch them.

Jeter hit by pitch for the 2nd time today.

Pull the starters in the 2nd? No way they should give up this early. We ain't Tampa Bay.

BTW, Yahoo says Crosby "singled to catcher"? A very good bunt attempt?

Way to go, Cap'n! Take another one for the team. Now, Mr. MVP, could you help us out here?
