Breaks of the Game: More Bounce to the Ounce
2008-05-23 18:27
by Alex Belth

The Yankees were both lucky and good on Friday night as they beat the woeful Mariners (who were both unlucky and bad) about the face and neck to the tune of 13-2.  It was a beautiful night--crisp and cool--for a laugher in the Bronx.  Manager Joe Girardi sat this one out after being suspended for his theatrics last night, but I'm sure he liked what he saw on TV as Andy Pettitte featured a sharp slider and mixed his pitches effectively, striking out a season-high nine over six innings.

The Yankee offense featured a few well struck balls (Hideki Matsui had three hits, the slumping Shelley Duncan cranked a three-run homer, while Bobby Abreu and Robinson Cano had a couple of hits each), but mostly featured a chorus line of dinkers and dunkers, 18-hoppers through the infield and off-the-end-of-the-bat flares to the outfield.  In fact, such a collection of cheap-o and fortunate hits I can't recall seeing in some time.  And during the eight-run fifth, Derek Jeter deftly kept himself in a rundown until the two runners behind him advanced; on the next play, Alex Rodriguez got a tremendous jump on a soft liner to center and scored easily, and later Matsui slid under a tag at the plate to score another run.  In the eighth, Matsui even threw out a runner at the plate who was trying to score on a sac fly.  Go figure.  It was that kind of night.

Everything broke New York's way as they won their third straight.  Maybe it's Giambi's mustache. Whatever the case, we'll take it and we like it.

I've been looking at the replay of that Matsui assist. I'm pretty sure the runner was safe.

Hey, Edwar is a strange man. He looks strange. His name is strange. And he walks two guys in a row when he has an eleven run lead, but then strikes out the next two. Guys like Edwar make baseball more fun.

I said (in the last thread) that this was going to be a fun series...

Check this out. Zito just won his first game of the season. So the Marlins lose to the previously 0-8 Zito, having just recently beaten the 8-0 Brandon Webb.

2 Webb was actually 9-0, which makes it even more strange (if less symmetrical).

I figured Alex must be all over that one.

...an unnamed yankee source explained that tonight's offensive explosion may have to do with more than the players just eating their wheaties. with manager joe girardi currently serving a one game suspension, veteran starter mike mussina provided the entire team with free ice cream before and after the game. when asked about how his new skipper may react to this act of insubordination, mussina said bluntly, "we tried it his way. we tried it my way. the numbers say the ice cream stays." girardi could not be reached for comment.

Matsui threw someone out?

Really?

Wow.

Damn, sorry I missed this one, I was out on the town.

Especially to see Andy pitch well.

Nice job, sticks!

4 yeah! i heard that... on my local NPR station. they had some intern reading the news, and he made me LOL in the car:

"Mr. Rick, best known for his rap song (pause) llll (awkward pause)lodi dodi (pronouncing it so it rhymes with fuddy doody)...

i guess the kid doesn't like to party. in fact, i would say he causes trouble and bothers everybody.

6 Matsui's assist is on the mlb page.

I still can't get sound on those videos. I think at the very beginning of the season I had no problem, but ever since early April I hear only white noise. I've tried Safari and Firefox -- is that the problem?

Hip Hop chatter and that pic of Giambi's 'stache, what a great start to a Saturday!
