Scrubway Serious, Take Two:

It rained all day and deep into the night on Friday in New York and the weaterman said it was going to keep a coming today.  However, the sun is out and it is a warm morning in New York.  Overcast, yeah, but it seems as if the Mets and Yankees will be able to get a game in this afternoon without a hitch.  Turns out this'll just be a brief encounter between the two teams as last night's game will be made up as part of a two-stadium double header in late June.  So, today gives an appealing match-up of southpaws: Johan Santana vs. Andy Pettitte.  The Yankees, of course, are well familiar with Santana.  They know how tough he can be, and with Alex Rodriguez's return still a few days away, the team is still at a disadvantage against lefties.  Pettitte has pitched poorly in three of his last four outings.  Time for him to come through with an improved performance.

Let's Go Yan-Kees.

Who would've guessed that we would be concerned about Pettitte's starts and that Moose would be all but dominant?

28 Hank didn't actually call out Melky, did he?

And speaking of Hank, I love his antics.

30 Heh heh. :)

You know where that comes from, right? Almost Famous, when Russel Hammond is tripping, standing on top of a fan's garage, about to plummet into the pool, he cries, "I am a golden god!"

So priceless.

32 Ah, right. Let him run his mouth as much as he likes, because I enjoy the buffoonery, just so long as he doesn't race out and sign Steve Kemp.

And btw, ftr, I think "He's fooled us long enough" has to go down as one of the all time greatest quotes in sports.

It's just perfect.

2008-05-17 10:50:58
37.   OldYanksFan
I won't say Santana is anywhere near done, but he doesn't look like a $140m man. Even as an FA, he might end up being a bad deal. He doesn't look like the guy from 2 years aso.
2008-05-17 10:52:28
38.   51cq24
37 he definitely doesn't look as dominant, but he's usually better as the season moves along.

33 yeah, it's pricless - i enjoy when you write it.

Meacham made a real bad decision there - nobody out? I know that the catcher made a great play and that Damon for some reason slowed down on the way but Jeez- we get at least one run there with Jeter et al coming up. REALLY BAD DECISION whether he scored or not.
2008-05-17 11:02:20

I fear that Bobby Meacham is to 3rd base coaches what Bobby Meachman was to shortstops. That was piss poor.

50.   williamnyy23
What a turn...Meachman with an absolutely awful send and now Pettitte is about to cough it up in the 4th again.

Pettitte's problem is pitch selection. He has Wright in the hole and instead of trying to get him to hit a grounder, they go with the high fastball.

The Yankees aren't going to get many better opportunities against Santana, so if Pettitte bombs here in the 4th, that could be the game.

2008-05-17 11:11:50

I don't know if it's mental or phsyical, but Pettitte's pitch selection and execution has been awful. If Andy can't get through 3 innings, the Yankees aren't going to win much.
2008-05-17 11:12:13
54.   Yankees Brasil
50 His problem was location. He had gotten some outs on that high FB. He just missed and left it over the plate. Then he left another one on the middle to Beltran. And now he misses low. He's just all over the plate now. We will be lucky to leave this inning 3 runs behind.
2008-05-17 11:13:05

Good thing Jeter caught that. They would have tagged up on Damon. : }
2008-05-17 11:13:37
57.   williamnyy23
52 That's the first...Andy isn't a power pitcher. Also, Wright is a much better fastball hitter than most. What's more, that situation begged for a slow curve so Wright could beat it into the ground.

The Yankees are losing because of diminished talent, but also because of bad baseball decisions. In this inning alone, a game that could of been 4-0 could be 4-2 Mets. That can't happen.

2008-05-17 11:14:44
58.   williamnyy23
Now he falls behind Easley 2-0, making him a much better hitter. Andy's inability to go through a lineup twice is baffling and concerning.

Is Pettitte getting squeezed pretty bad? Gameday looks like there are a lot of close pitches he's not getting.

Though after that last one to Easley perhaps I'm wrong...

2008-05-17 11:17:34
67.   williamnyy23
Now he falls behind 2-0 to Schneider....talk about frustrating.

2008-05-17 11:18:25

Really that wasn't a strikeout. The batter did what he had to do, but got rung up for it. Tough break for him, good for us.
2008-05-17 11:19:42
71.   yankee23
68 Must just be the gameday interns, then. It keeps showing two pitches right next to one another, one's a strike, the other's a ball. Maybe Andy's going for a Dice-K approach. (Throw lots of balls, look wild, that way when it's close you get the call...)
2008-05-17 11:19:55

That's an awful job by Peittitte....you can't try to get a bad hitter to chase 3-2 with the bases loaded. That tells you all you need to know about what Pettitte thinks of his stuff.

Andy has hurt the Yankees this season...it really makes you start to wonder.

2008-05-17 11:21:17
76.   weeping for brunnhilde
66 No, not really. He even got that generous called third strike on Easley.
2008-05-17 11:22:03

66 Not at all.
2008-05-17 11:24:25

This is pathetic. Another pitcher who can't get us 5 innings. The one offense who might be worse than ours already scored 3 in 4 innings. Talk about frustration.
2008-05-17 11:24:26
79.   williamnyy23
Bad breaks happen when you play bad baseball...from Meacham in the 3rd (and Abreu not going to 3rd on the throw) to Pettitte seeming to have no clue how to pitch in the 4th, the Yankees are now trailing a CY Young award winner who has a second life.

Why are the Yankees a below .500 team? It should be obvious.

2008-05-17 11:25:18

81 He was behind on the count to all of their bottom of the lineup hitters. He threw a slider on the dirt on a 3-2 count to a bad hitter. He deserves the hole he's in now.

Great answer back inning from the Yankees. With AG and Moeller in the next inning, this game is getting late early.

Giambi continues to hit the ball HARD and get nothing. Can you hit a ball harder then that? And how did Santana catch that? How did he even get out of the way?

Hey, I saw all the walks. Andy blew that inning. I was just trying to point out that the balls put in play were a joke. That 1,2,3 inning was a real pleasure. Yeesh.

If Hank is around and the Yankees lose, I wonder if he'll have something to say about Meacham. You know his daddy would.

Al Leiter and David Cone crack me up. Michael Kay, not so much.
And the shit keeps rollling. 2 quick outs + hit + hbp = ?

And another pathetic inning for Andy. This is going to get a lot uglier.

The Yankees keep struggling (and losing games) in the 3rd through 5th innings, when they've been outscored 91-66. Why is that? They've only had two effective starters all year.

That stat alone is sufficient justification for why Joba is much better off in the rotation than pitching the 8th inning. Sadly, the Yankees have been in many games come the 8th inning.
