Baseball Toaster Bronx Banter
Help
Crusing for a Bruisin'
2008-04-09 12:28
by Alex Belth

Everything is cool. The Yankees aren't scoring any runs and I haven't had a tantrum...yet. I watched the end of yesterday's game and saw Alex Rodriguez strike out for the fourth time. He was caught looking in his first three at bats against B. Banny, and fell behind the count quickly his fourth time up. Then he fouled off a few pitches and laid off another couple of sliders just off the plate. I had a great feeling that he was going to hit the ball hard. That something good was about to happen. I generally don't feel that way about him, which says more about me as a nervous fan of my hometown team, than it does about Rodriguez. But he eventually chased a ball out of the zone and went down swinging.

Someone is going to pay and soon. With our heroes Jeter and Posada* hurting, it's up to the rest of the boys to get the lead out. That's easier said than done, particularly with Mr. Grienke on the hill for the Royals tonight. Here's hoping Ian Kennedy comes through with a nice effort.

Let's Go Yan-Kees.

According to Will Carroll at BP:

The Yankees got more bad news than just the Captain's injury this week, as Posada had more problems with his shoulder. He couldn't complete a game behind the plate, and now his swing is even more affected by the pain, eliminating DHing as an alternative option. Worse, Peter Abraham is reporting that Posada says his arm feels "dead," noting that the problem is at the back of the shoulder. The Yankees will send Posada for imaging and tests, and have made the call for a replacement, fueling speculation that he's headed to the DL. It's too early to put a real expectation on how long he'll be out, though it's not too early for some pundits to already start pinging Brian Cashman for re-signing an older catcher. I'd remind them that this is a new injury and that Posada wasn't showing this issue in spring training. Posada actually points to an awkward throw that he made on April 1 as the root cause of this injury.

I had my first tantrum yesterday. Phil struggling was tough b/c I'm rooting so hard for him to be great. The offense not getting the bit hit against Bannister was brutal (Cano going down on a 3-2 pitch with the bases juiced... killer). Getting home and seeing Molina back behind the plate b/c Posada had been pulled... defensive lapses...

That put me in a foul mood. I said some silly things. Loudly.

So what's the roster move? Jeter DLed? Duncan down? Or, risky: DL Posada, Gonzo starts. If Jeter can't go by Friday, then also DL Jeter and call up Moeller.

I came late to the pet peeves thread, but I just had to chime in that I can't deal with food on subways either, most especially hot food. On nice trains like the Acela, yeah. But eating on the subway is like eating in the bathroom -- I don't want to be around it.

And here's hoping for a much better outing for IPK tonight.

Hmmm...pet peeve. The guy who sits in front of me at a baseball game who just has to stand up, like, totally, for every play, ya know?

Lineup per Abraham:

Damon DH
Cano 2B
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Giambi 1B
Molina C
Cabrera CF
Gonzalez SS
Kennedy RHP

No DL for Posada or Jeter. Still no word on who got sent down for AG.

I think Alberto Gonzalez is a younger Miguel Cairo. I don't get the love for him.

13.   ny2ca2dc
12 What love? I mean, he's got a funny name and all, less so now that he's the Former Attorney General, but does anyone love the guy? Even really like him? meh.

And I kind of think Miggy Cairo is AG's upside. Cairo at least had that one good year.

14.   yankeemonkey
Aww come on, guys! Let the kid show what he's got first before discarding him. AFAIK, Cano wasn't exactly tearing it up when he got called up, was he? Now, I'm not saying Gonzalez will be any good, but he deserves a chance to show what he's got.
2008-04-09 15:32:12
15.   Cliff Corcoran
14 I was a big Cano doubter back in 2005, but he actually was tearing it up when he was called up (.333/.368/.574 at Triple-A prior to his promotion). Also, Cano came up age age 22. Gonzalez is 24 and hasn't hit at Triple-A yet. What's more, from what little I've seen of him, I strongly doubt the positive reports about his fielding. I'd prefer they stick with Betemit at shortstop.
2008-04-09 15:33:09
16.   tommyl
14 The year Cano was called up he put up this line in AAA: 333/.368/.574 in 114 PAs before coming up to the Yankees.

Gonzo hit: .247/.300/.362 in AAA last year.

They are also the same age (25). I don't think there's much of a comparison. Gonzo clearly projects as a future UIF or all glove, no stick SS. He is not Derek Jeter Jr.

15 Damnit, you beat me to it!
2008-04-09 15:38:40
18.   yankeemonkey
OK, fine, you win. AG sucks. But could he be worse than Betemit has looked the past few games? It's just a few games until Jeter comes back, he's not going to get Pipped.
2008-04-09 15:41:17
19.   tommyl
18 On defense, no, but he won't be all that much better. On offense, no, he won't look worse, but he also won't look any better. Betemit on the other hand might hit a ball to the outfield given the chance.

I agree with Cliff, the whole point of Betemit is that he's a plus bat as a UIF. If you're not going to use him as such, what's the point?

2008-04-09 15:42:15
20.   Cliff Corcoran
18 Other than the bad plays on attempting basestealers (which are admittedly significant), how as Betemit looked bad? You mean at the plate? He did have an RBI single yesterday. I think there's more promise of Betemit contributing on offense, and I'm not troubled by his defense unless that trouble applying tags repeats itself in another game.

20 Ha, I win this time ;).
2008-04-09 15:47:33

Also, I know clutch stats are meaningless, but both of Betemit's hits this year have come with me on and he hit .339/.440/.596 with men on base last year.

Per Pete:

UPDATE, 6:51 p.m.: Stunning news from Joe Girardi. It seems that Ensberg injured his left ankle on Monday. This was probably news to Ensberg until he was told about it today. The Yankees will announce their move after BP but that's what it'll be, Ensberg placed on the 15-day disabled list.

So Jose Molina will catch with Jorge Posada his "hopefully we don't have to use him" backup.

I'm a little sad that I missed the pet peeve post. I am only 19 (very young for the Banter crowd, I know), and I have a ton of pet peeves. I'm destined to be the female equivalent of "get off my lawn!" at the age of 30.

I hope Ian has a better outing than the last one. I haven't watched the archived game yet, but I'm sure it was all about location. Hopefully the HP ump this time around knows what a strike-zone is. Yesterday was atrocious for everyone. I felt bad for Alex because he K'd on balls twice. I mean, he's Alex Rodriguez! Doesn't baseball code say that his veteran presence + excellent knowledge of the strike zone mean that he gets the calls?

Hopefully DJ will be back by Saturday then. I don't look forward to a Sox series with no Jeter and no Po.

The Tigers are really struggling. But, I have no sympathy for them, picked as the front-runner in the American League with such an "unstoppable" offense.

Through 7 games:
Runs Scored: 15
Runs Allowed: 44

The situation could be much worse, my fellow Banterers.

2008-04-09 16:51:08
31.   williamnyy23
30 I think I had them at 85 wins in my preseason standings, so I am not surprised they have struggled. Still, 0-8 is pretty rough.
2008-04-09 16:56:20
32.   mehmattski
31 Yeah I was never as impressed with the Tigers' whole team as some. The pitching staff is Verlander and a lot of junk, particularly Dontrelle Willis, who is a disaster in the American League already. The lineup is strong 3-4-5, but also fragile, and Sheff has already missed a few games. Mags is bound to regress after last season, and the Ghost of Pudge continues to get worse. I wouldn't be surprised if they finish fourth or worse in runs scored.
2008-04-09 16:58:16

24 You sure it wasn't splinters in his butt.

22 Also, I know clutch stats are meaningless, but both of Betemit's hits this year have come with me on and he hit .339/.440/.596 with men on base last year.

Cliff, I didn't know you made the team. Congrats! And can you get me one of Jeter's castoffs?

2008-04-09 17:01:59
34.   tommyl
Nope, its Shelly Duncan who's been optioned to AAA. Sigh, I do not approve of this mood. I hope Gonzo proves me wrong by being Ozzie Smith with the glove and knocking a few runs in tonight.
2008-04-09 17:02:51
35.   mehmattski
24 Now PeteAbe is saying that Duncan is getting sent down. This makes absolutely no sense to me. If Jeter has to go on the DL, then you can't recall Duncan for 10 days. Why not just DL Jeter now, rather than playing short two players? It can't be all pride, can it?

In addition, SS-Rodriguez,3B-Ensberg is still better than SS-Gonzales,3B-Rodriguez. Just sayin'.

2008-04-09 17:03:39
36.   williamnyy23
34 I think that's more about getting Shelley some playing time and back into the swing of things...at least I hope so.
2008-04-09 17:05:18
37.   williamnyy23
35 If Arod could still play SS, it would make perfect sense, but every quote I have read suggests even he has some doubts about that. The last thing the Yankees need is to screw up Arod's head.

I'm gonna guess that this out of the Dodgers-Giants playbook, where earlier this season both Chad Billingsley and Tim Lincecum were held out of their starts because it was supposed to rain.

The plan backfired since the rain held off and both pitchers entered the game in the third and pitched through light rain...

The only bright spot with Bruney starting is that it shows Girardi et al will use the BP more flexibly. Hopefully that means the obsession with carrying a designated long man has been overcome. We'll know more about how different things are (or are not) this year if Igawa gets called up.

114 You're kidding right? Its about to rain there, conditions are poor. Is it worth it to risk Joba in that situation? What if he slips on the mound? I don't think this has anything to do with being the "8th inning guy." He's already pitched in the 7th and pitched multiple innings.

114 But Bruney in this low leverage situation makes more sense. I mean, if the game is wiped, it's as low-leverage as games get.

Or have Pettitte start, as scheduled, and bring IPK for a long stint if needed?

578 Clearly, that applies to Morgan Ensberg as well.

580 I am not impressed with Girardi today. Not with the roster move; failing to pinch hit for AG; and especially failing to pinch hit Ensberg for Giambi vs a LHP. That's exactly the situation to use Ensberg.

So what if Hillman goes to a righty? He's just burned his only available lefty reliever (I assume Mahay is unavailable tonight), and unless he's bringing in Soria - which he wouldn't - its not like the other guys are unbeatable either.

Still, its early, but I expected more out of Joe G.

The Yankees' roster decisions continue to be confounding. The team hasn't been scoring runs, so they promote the light-hitting Alberto Gonzalez from Triple-A, let him play the entire game, and bypass an obvious opportunity to pinch-hit for him in the late innings.

Why not just bring back Miguel Cairo, for crying out loud?

With regards to Ensberg, what is the point of having him on the roster? Is there a clause in Giambi's contract that he can't be pinch-hit for?

Not a good game for Girardi...

John Bale, tomorrow's Royals starter, is a lefty. If Ensberg is at 1B, and Betemit is at SS, some of my faith in Girardi will be restored. If AG is at SS, and Giambi at 1B - hey, its not like Bale is Johan Santana, right - I will be upset. Especially if Girardi's reasoning is to build up Giambi's confidence.

Not that I have a problem building up Giambi's confidence. But why does the same logic not apply to Betemit? Because Giambi was once a league MVP? Why should Betemit, the starting BUIF, ride the bench when the starting SS is out? Because he botched a couple of throws? In a game were the entire team made some pretty poor plays with the gloves?

I'm cranky, but I'm hopeful. Andy is due for a good start, right?

618 Thinking isn't Kyle's problem. (Besides, isn't the catcher calling the pitches?) Its execution. He's go to execute his pitches, so that his slider, you know, slides, and so that his fastball actually moves a little (and goes somewhere where the hitter isn't likely to smack it over the fence).

Of course, Kyle's been having this problem, off and on, for years now . . .

vs RHP as LH: 810 PA, .266/.345/.460

John Bale sucks, it would be a disgrace to not hit him.

he does however, kill lefties, Abreu / Giambi / Damon would have some serious trouble with him. though Abreu's been on fire and Giambi seem to be doing better than his # suggest . I'd sit Damon and play Ensberg at first.

Alberto isn't much of a bat, though with the way Betemit's been struggling might as well play the man with the awsome glove. plus he can't suck much more than Betemit's career line against lefties anyway

Wow, 629 posts on an April game! Does this say more about the Banter Band or the Yankees slow start?

I'm with OYF, the cagey veteran. Of course April games count but of course April is always filled with weirdness, both weather-related and player-related.

Yes, the Yanks were terrible last night and have been at bat almost all year so far. Do the panic-buttoneers here really think they'll spend 6 months not hitting? That yelling and shredding garments will cause Hitting to Happen?

Or are we ready for the Fire Sale of Overpaid Veterans? (I'm in an all-caps mood, it seems.) The pitching was fine on a terrible night. Farnsworth is what he is, unreliable, but my bet is we live with him in 5th/6th/7th inning roles for awhile, so it is going to matter if the coaches can keep/restore his confidence. Same for LaTroy the Burning Man.

I'm amused to see the first embers of Fire Joe Girardi show up so soon after rapturous 'Girardi Ball' posts. We're beginning to sound like the worst caricatures of impatient baseball fans. Consider Boston, the Tigers, Cleveland.

April is strange. Accept it as one accepts the universe. Do not urge the signing of Mike Piazza. Dump not on Damon. Say 'Ommm' a few times.
