Yo, I'm a total nerd. I don't mind if people call me a nerd because I was never really a dorkasorous dweeb when I was growing up, so I can embrace the label without any personal scars. (The folks that tend to bristle at that label really were nerds and were ostrasized because of it back in their high school days.) One nerdy thing I love doing is hiding out in the microfilm room of the New York Public Library on 42nd street, scrolling through old magazines. On that note, I was geeked to find that I made the NY Public Library's most recent newsletter.

Oh, and I just had to give a shout out to one of our most loyal readers (and commentors): Happy Birthday to our man Chyll Will.

1 Kate Moss, Randy Moss, Santana Moss leap to mind. Har har har. Not. You'd have to be some kinda geek to write a lame celebrity moss joke like that.

Yeah, big ups to the birthday boy, Chyll Will!

Delicious turn of phrase, Alex, as usual.

Way to go, B! I'm with you on the nerd issue, I knew it about myself even if few had the nerve to say it to me, and I'll always treasure "Revenge of the Nerds" for that reason.

Thanks all, and I put up a new post on Serious Consideration! that might be of slight interest >;)

The thing is though, that the nerds won. It's no longer nerdy to be a nerd. The nerds invent everything, own everything, even baseball has been nerdified.

Jobs, Gates, Beane, James, Yorke, Tarantino...

Nerd is the new black.

Nice mention, Al. They plugged the site and the book and linked to a specific post. Can't ask for anything more. Those library types know what's what.

I'm not going to say 'you're pretty in pink' cause . . . well . . . you're not. Neat photo and a great idea, did you clear it with the sibs or will there be hell to pay?

Happy Birthday, Chyll.

Alex, I remember spending a lot of time in the microfilm room myself back in college. I loved reading the old issues of the NY Times sports pages. IIRC, they had film going back to the 20's. Checking out those old stories about the Yankees was pretty neat (especially since finding anything about the Yankees down here was pretty difficult back in the late 80's).

Back then all the English 101 classes had to do research for their papers in the microfilm room. One Saturday morning I was sitting there reading some old sports stories on microfilm and the freshman sitting at the machine next to me noticed what I was reading. He asked: "What class is that for?" I told him that it was not for a class and that I was just reading it for fun. The look he gave me screamed "Nerd!"

I didn't care, I felt like a prospector who had just discovered a shining piece of gold in the bottom my pan.

Happy Birthday Chyll!

I am a nerd ... and proud of it.

I have worn a t-shirt that states ...
"There are 10 types of people in the world ... those who understand binary, and those who don't"

And I always check out these sites ...

Ha - microfilm! I used to go look at microfilm ostensibly to do research for a school paper and then spend hours poring over old movie ads, rock'n'roll concert ads and reviews and baseball box scores. I suppose that does make me a nerd.
