Straight Up and Down, Troop, Don't Even Play Yourself

Note: The Bronx Banter blog has moved to bronxbanterblog.com.

Last night won't mean much if the Yanks don't win again tonight. They need to win this game and they need to win this series. Being three games up on Seattle is a whole lot better than just a one-game lead. Then again the Mariners need to win this game badly too. I expect their best effort and Washburn has been tough on the Yankees in the past. But I also expect Hughes to throw a good game and I expect the Yankees to win. Could be wrong, of course. They could come out flat. Who knows what we'll see. But they should win, right? Alex Rodriguez is in the starting line-up, he'll DH. Jorge sits, so does Abreu. Betemit plays third, G'bombee plays first, and Shelley SlamDuncanstein is in right.

Let's Go Yan-Kees!

It would be damn nice to see Hughes pitch well tonight. Not just OK, not terrible, only a few big hits, hopeful signs, etc - but a genuinely well-pitched game.

We all know Hughes has the potential; we saw him mow down the Rangers pre-hamstring. Go Phil!

Hughes has got to be aggresive and throw strikes.

We need this game.

7 IP, 95 pitches, 2 ER, 9 K, 1 BB. You heard it here first.

Now, that's a prediction I can get down with.

Did anyone just watch the replay of the 95 playoffs vs the M's they just showed on YES? Man, that's the kind of series A Rod needs to have. Like the one Griffey had, with the five dingers and then scoring the walk-off run.

Yo, I HATE Washburn. Straight up don't like his smug-sorta Keifer Sutherland-lookin' vibe. Maybe it's an 02 Angels thing.

9 Whoa, did you just talk ill of Jack Bauer?
2007-09-05 16:03:34
11.   yankz
8 It has to be against Boston, or in the WS. Because his '04 ALDS vs. the Twinkies was pretty damn good.

I am surprised they aren't riding Bobby's hot streak. He was on fire yesterday.

Not bad, not bad. That's the kind of break Phil needs to get some confidence going. Now, got get them Franchise!

I'm glad that's Jose Vidro, because that should have been gone. Also, nice route out there Slam Duncan.

9 I can count the players I really don't care for on one hand, but he's one of them. For the exact reason you mention.

10 Bauer on the other hand is a certified bad ass!

2007-09-05 16:14:17
20.   EricSanSan
Make sure you get in there against lefties, Phil, don't want to miss in the down in the middle.

CHANGEUP!!!! CHANGEUP PLEASE!!
2007-09-05 16:15:20

Dammit. Enough with the walks, kid.
2007-09-05 16:16:49
25.   EricSanSan
Unreal. More pitches now because we can't throw a left handed hitter a changeup when he's ahead in the count.
2007-09-05 16:17:03
26.   Mattpat11
Jeremy Bonderman still hasn't gotten better.

Changeup?
2007-09-05 16:18:54
29.   yankz
Boo ya!

What was that, 20 pitches?

2007-09-05 16:18:59
30.   EricSanSan
Nice. It was only 93, but it was more than enough. Big that he gets out of that inning unscathed. Now let's score some runs to give him some breathing room.

31.   rsmith51
13 Touche, Alex. I guess it is a house money sort of day.
2007-09-05 16:20:22
32.   Mike T
29 21 pitches.
2007-09-05 16:24:22
33.   rbj
31 T'ain't no such thing as a house money day until beginning of March. Yankees need to drive a stake through the other WC opponents. Still, Jorge does need a rest now and then.

Abreu? Dunno, we'll see how well Duncan does.

Lets see if the Yanks offense can actually give Hughes a comfy lead, which, knowing how they fare against Washburn, don't seem likely...

35.   Yankees Brasil
That last pitch to Jeter was called a ball when Hughes was pitching.. fucking ump
2007-09-05 16:26:56

Hughes never seems to get that FB on the outside, huh?
2007-09-05 16:27:14

The pitch that comes in 80 MPH, is that his slider or change? It moves a little, but I know he's going to mix in the change this game...

42.   SF Yanks
This ump is unbelievable.
2007-09-05 16:31:14
43.   SF Yanks
41 That looks like his slider.
2007-09-05 16:31:37
44.   Yankees Brasil
Who is this ump? Horrible job so far
2007-09-05 16:32:26
45.   EricSanSan
It his slider. His changeup has some late fade to his arm side. The slider is just a tighter breaking ball, similar to what Wang throws.
2007-09-05 16:32:54
46.   yankz
Hey, he's doing it again...
2007-09-05 16:33:04

Nice inning for Phil. Woulda been better if the ump was paying attention during that 2nd AB

Washburn must hide the ball well. I've never seen a guy throwing 86 getting so many swings and misses. Maybe he could teach Moose how he does it.
2007-09-05 16:38:11
52.   SF Yanks
Damn Washburn threw that pitch 104 mph. I didn't know he could throw that fast.
2007-09-05 16:39:35
53.   Zack
Continuing the comments from the last thread about A-Rod, when you really think about it, A-Rod is the best power hitter this team has seen since Mantle, and is probably #4 behind Ruth, mantle, Gehrig...On a team like the Yankees with that kind of history, that is saying something, and you just can't let that walk away...
2007-09-05 16:40:52

Has Washburn inherited the Frank Castillo "I can dominate the Yankees with pure junk" mantle?
2007-09-05 16:41:11

53 Yeah you can. They haven't won a WS with him. Obviously he's not helping.

Also, Clipper had almost the exact same career SLG (.579 for JD, .577 for Arod).

2007-09-05 16:41:31
58.   yankz
Is this ump from Boston or something?
2007-09-05 16:41:31

Ump better give that call to Hughes, that was so far off the plate. Hughes hasn't even gotten the calls that are ON the plate
2007-09-05 16:42:23

Way to punish the ball guys. Hold us down Phil.

2007-09-05 16:48:59

Nice K Phil. Hughes basically has to throw the ball right down the middle to get a strike call
2007-09-05 16:49:04

Man, I am so happy Wang is getting the start Sunday. We're driving down to KC for the weekend (I'm from Omaha). Anyway, I was afraid it would be ruined by watching Mussina spit the bit. I've been a Moose fan for awhile, which would make it even tougher I think. Plus, I haven't seen Wang pitch before.

68 Well, Ty Cobb also said he could hit homeruns if he wanted. Annoyed at Ruth for upstaging him, Cobb went 6 for 6 one day, with three home runs and had two more then next day. He simply like the strategy of "small ball" better.

Hot and cold. He's looked very good, and very bad.
2007-09-05 16:54:32
92.   Zack
Hughes is getting lots of swings and misses and like 0 called strikes. That should tell you something about the zone and his command being the problem
2007-09-05 16:56:38
93.   RIYank
92 Uh. Against Beltre, two of the three strikes were called!
2007-09-05 16:57:35
94.   SF Yanks
The M's approach is clearly to take the first pitch to get ahead in the count. Hughes throws a lot of first pitch ball, which increase the odds that they will see fastballs in the count so they can sit on something. Hughes needs to get the first pitch over.
2007-09-05 16:57:41

I'd give Joba and Mo 2 innings a piece tonight. Just keep it close thru 5, kid.

100 Yeah.
Over 50 pitches. 34 strikes. I guess that's still a low percentage.

I really wish Hughes could pitch somewhere other than the middle of the plate. it makes it really hard to get guys out

More offspeed early in the count. They are starting to sit dead red on the heater. Have to work backwards sometimes.

It seems to me that Jeters defense is actually getting worse. This is a scary thought. Maybe ARod re-ups on the condition that he plays SS. That would REALLY make him valuable. Jete's would be OK at 1st base.

Well, at the very least I hope Moose is taking notes.

See Mike, you can succeed with an 86 mph fastball, and yes, you can throw inside as well.

You see, if you only throw away away away, that's when you get clobbered, but you can still get an 86 mph pitch in on the hands and get some popups. Thank you Professor Washburn.

Jeter is in a bad way right now. Posada and A-Rod are the only ones who can hit right now. The pitching is suspect to say the least.

224 They did alright hitting yesterday. They are leading in the WC.

And I don't disagree with bunting Molina over. It's the sixth inning and he's the only one who's actually had a hit. Tie up the game and get into the Seattle bullpen.

217 Not only does he make up a silly lineup (sits Matsui and Abreu for Duncan and Damon), bats a struggling Jeter third and Cabrera second (two of the Yankees least productive hitters getting the most ABs), but then he gives away an out with the bunt (at home) and doesn't PR for Molina. It would have taken a very deep flyball to score the run, so even if you are pro-bunt, it doesn't make sense with Molina.

Joe is a big time liability and remains the biggest obstacle between this team and the post season. What a waste.

231 I'm not going to get political here, but
1) They are playing in America.
2) The players and fans are currently in America.
3) It would be a tad impractical to play "God Bless Wherever You're From" for a dozen countries.

Why is it that you can't say something good about one thing without people some how interpreting it as a slight against all other things that are not that thing.

Mind boggling that that's an issue in my opinion.

243 You bunt Molina to 3rd tho not to score on a sac fly, but to make sure he scores on a hit. With 1 out you get 2 chances to single him in from 3rd. Otherwise it's 3 chances to get 2 hits to bring him in.

Whoa. According to Gameday, Betemit just got a realllllly good call on ball four. Pretty clearly in the zone. Maybe that makes up for the early squeezing of Phil.

243 That's a lot of 2nd guessing imo. Tonights a good night to sit those guys. They can't play every game ya know? Also, it's a good way to get Duncan some playing time.

Thing is, no manager is perfect. If Joe gets fired, you will find things that you don't like about the new guy (as would I, I'm sure) and start calling for his head. I simply see it as that, no manager is perfect and all come with faults. To say this, "...a big time liability and remains the biggest obstacle between this team and the post season. What a waste" is a tad overboard.

You can't fault Joe for the team not doing their job. I know he has bullpen management flaws but I think there is some serious hind sighting going. Add that to all managers having flaws and you get someone who isn't happy with their manager.

I know we won't agree on this and we could go back and forth for ages, so this will be my last comment on this matter.

231 Technically, God is blessing the DR and Cuba and Panama and P.R. and Venezuela as they are all part of America. The stadiums are actually in the U.S. which is just one country in the northern America.

I know it's not how the song is meant though. I don't really find the song offensive. There's nothing wrong with asking for your self or family or nation or continent or hemisphere to be blessed if that's what you wish. The song is not saying "to hell, with everyone else."

Still, I'm no big fan. But, I wasn't living in NY on that day and recognize that it may still hold meaning to those who were.

The only thing that would cost ARod the MVP is if Detroit wins the WC and not us. Then it would go to Mags.

Way too much importance placed on a player who plays for a team that wins 2 or 3 games more then a better player on the other team.

405 409 White got steamed over not getting the call on the inside pitch that's been bugging both teams all game. Hughes got squeezed on it several times and Betemit got a gift as well, I believe, in the same location.

White pointed at the umpire, which got him tossed right away, then flipped the ball over his shoulder. Johjima tried to block the line of sight of the umpire as White started barking. It was pretty funny.

I don't mind Mo in the game. I'd rather he come into a one run game on six days rest on Friday.

Sox throwing out Okajima in the ninth. And they still have Papelbon, although I guess he pitched an inning yesterday.

Oh, and of course, Gagne. So there's still hope.

Oh, nice, Okajima hits Zaun with a pitch. Only way he was going to get on! Pinch runner? Bunt?

Phil was hot and cold. By Banter opinion, at least, he was squeezed early, and threw a lot of pitches over the middle of the plate. But he got some really nice Ks, too.

433 Oh, not that 13!

Well, they bunted, and then Wells knocked one out. So the vaunted Sox pen has let them down again!

2 run bomb off of Okijima. Jays up 6-4, top of the 9th.

Okajima has never thrown this many innings in his life, according to Abraham.

Torre's solution would be to give him more work and let him pitch out of it:)

Was watching on DVR and just caught up. Wow, McLaren might actually be a worse BP manager than Joe Torre. Washburn at 94 pitches, had given up 3 hits. The homer to Molina was clearly a fluke, and A-Rod, well no one gets him out anymore. So he pulls him and plays musical BP because he can. I mean, you bring in a decent reliever, he gives up one walk, maybe let him pitch to one more batter?

441 Is it a matter of IP or teams seeing him over and over again?

Its been the Orioles, Yankees and Blue Jays that have hit him lately.

443 He's your typical ML manager.

Which is why I don't think Torre's eventual replacement will be this God send people think he will be.

446 I tend to agree, but our job as fans is to bitch about the manager. Still, his usage of Vizcaino has been baffling, and now he has a shoulder problem.

446 Disagree, its different problems. Torre picks a favorite and rides him to death. McLaren seems obsessed with matchups, lefty, righty, lefty...blah, blah blah. Crappy pitcher=crappy pitcher.

456 And I think that's an even bigger pandemic amongst ML managers. Even Mike Scioscia, who everyone praises, singlehandedly lost the playoffs on a stupid ass matchup.

This is after he got rid of his team's second best hitter for an ego trip.

Jose Guillen is the hitter, some weak-ass lefty faced Ortiz, if I remember right, in 2004.
2007-09-05 19:46:19
463.   Mattpat11
459 He suspended Jose Guillen (.294/.352/.497 27/104 119 OPS+) because Guillen "showed him up" by pitching a fit when he pulled him for a pinch runner.

He then removed K-Rod from an elimination game in the bottom of the tenth at Fenway so he can bring in Jarrod Washburn (99 Regular season ERA+ 3.1 IP 5 H 7 ER 3 BB in Game 1) so he could use his left handed superpowers against David Ortiz.

Mr Ortiz was not impressed.

463 We can only hope that he fucks up that badly should the Angels and Yankees meet in the first round of the playoffs, as looks increasingly likely.

Anyone still watching the Tigers?

Why are the Sox IBB-ing Guillen to get to Perez?? Perez is a much better hitter. I don't get it.

465 467 Sorry, Timo may have gotten it right this time, and for the 10 games he's played for the Tigers this season, but he's a what did you say? A much better hitter than Guillen? Huh?

Sorry, I couldn't let that one go:

Timo's a career .264/.304/.376/.680
Guillen meanwhile -- .291/.359/.451/.809 for his career.

There's really no comparison. There's a reason Timo's bounced around the league and Guillen hasn't. And Ozzie knows it, as Timo put up the following atrocious seasons w/ the ChiSox in 04/05 -- .623/.562 ops Yikes.

Take it back!
