Just One Day Out Of Life

The Yankees have won 9 of their last 12 games and the last four games they've lost have been started by Scott Kazmir, John Lackey, Johan Santana, and Dan Haren. You really can't complain about that, though it is cause for concern heading into tonight's game against another big name pitcher, Toronto's Roy Halladay. Here's the good news: after a fantastic April (4-0, 2.28 ERA), Halladay's been something of a mess, posting a 6.35 ERA over his last eleven starts and a 6.85 ERA over his last four. The bad news is that it seems a significant part of that has been bad luck. Halladay has allowed 92 hits in his last 66 2/3 innings, which can be traced to his inflated .323 opponents average on balls in play. That cannot, however, be traced to the Toronto defense, which is fifth in the majors at turning balls in play into outs and puts a solid in field quartet behind the groundballing Halladay.

More bad news is that Andy Pettitte's recent history is actually worse than Halladay's. He's posted a 6.99 ERA over his last eight starts, a 9.00 mark in his last five, and a whopping 13.14 in his last three. More encouraging signs are that Pettitte fell just one out short of a quality start in Tampa last week, and handled the Blue Jays expertly in a hard-luck loss back in late May when he was undone by poor defense and run support and Aaron Hill's steal of home. Halladay last faced the Yankees in September of last year, leaving the game after 3 1/3 innings with a forearm strain.

1 What are these new age "stats" things you are talking about? Its clear that Edwar was picked up because some scout saw his glasses and said, "Those glasses, they look gritty and old."

current rumor over at MLBtraderumors ... dan johnson for scott proctor, though supposedly the two teams haven't talked in about a week

frankly, i'd be surprised if that's all beane would want for johnson

and what the hell would the wheel of guts look like if joe didn't have EDSP to run out there every game?

2007-07-17 14:03:58
4.   tommyl
3 Ugh, can we please instead trade a package of Myers and Farnsworth for a bucket of balls?
2007-07-17 14:08:25
5.   Shaun P
3 The Wheel of Guts might not survive the loss of EDSP.

4 If no team wants to trade for him, I don't see why the Yanks shouldn't just release Myers. He's not making much money, he's ultimately redundant - Igawa or Villone could easily be used to deal with LHB, shoot even Edwar - and he hasn't done his job. Its dicey with relievers, especially LOOGYs, because everything is a small sample, but c'est la vie.

5 I'd put the guy on waivers then, if someone makes a claim you can always try to make a trade. If not, see ya. Frees up a spot on the 25 and the 40-man.

6 Speaking of which, someone is going to have to be taken off when Hughes comes back. He's presently on the 60-day DL. Hmmm...I wonder if that is why they are waiting?

4 if getting DJ means JD meets the DL, we might actually get something resembling production out of our DH slot
2007-07-17 14:28:33

8 Because its clear that getting DJ means that Andy Phillips rides the bench while JD continues to DH.

If they had any intention of DLing Damon, they would've done it by now. They're not waiting around for a new bat. Unless he tears something or breaks a bone, I don't see it happening.

2007-07-17 16:16:11
17.   tommyl
13 Yeah, and Hughes is in direct competition with Igawa for a starting slot. Seriously? Let's see, on the one hand you have a 21 year old with great stuff, makeup, impeccable minor league stats and in two starts he has pitched decently and taken a no hitter into the 7th. On the other you have a guy who manages to throw over 100 pitches in 5 innings, give up HRs at a prodiguous rate. Hmmm...but I guess its the lack of regular work that has impeded Igawa, huh?
2007-07-17 16:21:23
18.   rabid stan
17 That's just talk. If Cash were really serious about putting Igawa and Hughes on an even footing, he'd already be in the loony bin.

Hughes is coming to the big club the next start after reaching 95 pitches in the minors.

19.   Mattpat11
You can always tell when Kay likes a guy or not by the way he calls their failures. If someone he likes (Pettitte, as an example because he happens to be pitching) gives up runs, he says it very quickly. When someone he doesn't like does it, (Mussina, for example) He drags it out.
2007-07-17 16:23:07
20.   Mattpat11
18 I'd have put him in the looney bin when he spent all that money on Igawa.
2007-07-17 16:24:09

Andy hasn't been that bad so far. The only reason he gave up a run is because the Yanks apparently had only eight men on the field when Rios was at the plate.

122 If making the playoffs means another 3-year deal for Clueless, then I think i'd opt for the team crapping out. Having said that, we shouldn't have to choose. All that prevents this team from making a real run is the manager and his dependence on underperformming veterans.

86 I agree with you, but its about 11 years too late for that. I remember cursing at Torre when he'd bring in Nelson in tight spots the year Nelson was useless - but then there was always Stanton to call on to bale him out, because there were two 8th inning guys.

Another year the roles were reversed - Nelson was lights out, but Joe would go to Stanton (who sucked) first.

129 Probably, but its time to stop showcasing Farnsworth. With every run allowed, and every poor performance, he just loses more value.

173 mo qualifies under the 1st 2 requirements.

the question about whether it's worth it to not make the playoffs to get rid of torre is off. the question is whether we could make the playoffs even without him. who is going to be a good manager for us? girardi is hard to judge because he seems too nice to argue a lot, but he also says a lot of questionable things. what if he's just as bad? did anyone actually watch him manage in florida? didn't he make some questionable calls in spring training or something?

On a side note, Cairo could have been called out for interference because Bowa ran all the way down the line. If the umps determined that Bowa distracted the defense, Cairo would have been an automatic out.

304 What part of "Mo has never pitched four consecutive games" did you not figure out. Said Torre before the game, regarding Mo's lack of work in the first half, and whether it meant he could be used more in the second half:

"If the doctor lets you have an ice cream a day. That doesn't mean you can save up 30 days and have them all on the last day of the month. That's not really healthy,."

Why do we mock when Proctor gets used every day and worry about him burning out, but it's okay to use Mo four straight days and five out of six?

WPA has a funny take on Melky's game tonight.

Melky went 3 for 4, singled, stole third and scored the tying run in the ninth, and his Win Probability Added? -0.35, second worst on the team tonight.

371 I'm an optimist, but I have to say that I agree for now...eight games back is eight games back. However, I think this team is capable of playing .700 ball for a stretch of 50 to 60 games, just like the As, Twins, Indians, and Yankees have all done the last 4 years.

The only problem is that even at that pace, they need help. If the Sox and Indians really do come back to earth or fall on some misfortune, then yes, I'll start scoreboard watching more seriously.

2007-07-17 20:05:09

383.   rabid stan
380 I can't elaborate because I don't know the niceties of WPA. Look on fangraphs.

They got the line right, and by the graph, Melky is properly credited with a boost for his single in the ninth, but on balance WPA says he hurt the Yanks tonight.

2007-07-17 20:08:37
385.   ny2ca2dc
381 The Sox really are coming back to earth. The first half surge was built on Wakefield tossing 2.x era, schilling tossing eq=200 innings of 3.5, same for Beckett at DiceK, and Varitek, Youk, Pedroia (post april) and Lowell way playing WAY over their heads, while Papi was pretty much himself (with a couple less homers), and Manny swooning & coco, lugo & drew pretty much sucking. Also the bullpen wasn't exposed because the starters were going so deep.
Manny is still swooning, and the over-their-heads guys are coming down. Wakefield is almost at a 5 era, schilling is out, and Beckett & DiceK are looking at like high 3 ERAs (and i still think DiceK is their best pitcher, inconsistent as he's been...)

I still think catching them is highly improbable, but it's not impossible (think injury to Oritz, and remember his knee is barking, and maybe more time on the DL for Beckett or DiceK, who's agent is squawking about his workload) that the yanks overtake the sox. what a hoot that would be. Of course, shaking out the Yanks roster would be a prerequisite to making a run...

392 Do you honestly believe that other GMs will be swayed by Torre's post game comments? Even if you are trying to trade him, that doesn't excuse his continued use in high leverage situations. I'd rather just cut him than lose 1 game in an attempt to showcase. Cashman should simply make the case that Farnsworth has a good arm but hasn't handled the NY pressure well (which is really bull), and then offer to send him along with some cash for just about anything he can get in return.

393 Exactly. With the brass praying for a 1-2-3 power inning, and the deal would be done tonight. P.T. Barnum, baby...

394 C'mon. Who would think a GM would be swayed by spin? They have eyes. But they also have weaknesses. They see 100mph and the thought that they'll be the one to set him straight. Happens time and time and time again. Sell high, brah. If Farns was lights out tonight, Cashman would have on the phone '4AM.

396 Your saying that there is a GM out there who would allow one inning to override Farnsworth's entire season? You really believe that? If such a moron exists, then I don't think he'd even need to see one good inning. The bottom line is that the Yankees need to win every game and there is no reason why Farnsworth should ever pitch a high leverage inning.

397 Yup.

pavano - verb - To hold onto a player long past their expiration date because their future once held promise in the eyes of the general manager.

"Cashman has been pavanoed on Farnsworth for so long that there's no chance he'll ever trade him."

397 Farnsworth has played on four teams in the last four years, which although bespeaking a certain journeymanism, also shows that more than one GM has been been willing to trade for/sign him.

Look around the league--there are tons of mediocre and worse relievers, and a surprising number of them continue to find employment as they rotate from team to team. If you're LH, you can find a job. If you throw hard, you can find a job.

The question is not whether Cashman can find a GM who would take him. Rather, the questions are A] What would they get in return? B] How much salary do they have to eat? C} Will Cashman actually trade him if a deal is there?

Hey, the boys not only won the day Igawa pitched, but also the day Doc pitched. Nice. And Farnsworth, maybe he can go for the old school sport goggles next time. Preferably not in the 8th inning. Shut 'em down tomorrow, Rocket.

397 You miss the point. When you want to move a guy, you put him out there, you don't hide him. Your bottom line is the Yanks need to win every game. Their bottom line might just be to get rid of this guy right now so they have a better shot to win in the remaining 71 games. A solid outing or two will bring a better deal.

Sounds illogical, but that's what happens. Everyone knows what Farns is, but again, there is no shortage of think tanks on teams that believe they can turn straw to gold. Apparently this organization was one of them, and don't fret, there are more in line.

400 i think Farnsworth needs to let go of inhibitions. My solution? He should wear a blindfold on the mound and then uncork that 100 MPH heater.

402 He thinks too much. He just needs to throw. Preferrably in the direction of home plate. Whichever guru can unlock that in Farns noodle will be manager material...

404 Wonderful!

No one is going to read this, but I agree with Bklyn about Farnsworth.

397 As for a GM dumb enough to let a small sample size overrule a large body of work, the line starts with Jim Hendry of the Cubs, who's followed at least by Wayne Krivsky, Bill Bavasi, and Dave Littlefield. Terry Ryan of the Twins, for all his savvy, also seems to have "veteran pitcher fetish" - how else do you explain Ortiz and Ponson?

100 MPH and that shiny "C" for closer blind a lot of people. Remember Billy Koch?
