It seems alarmist to say that a game in late May qualifies as a "must-win," but man, the Yankees really do need this game tonight. Curt Schilling, one of the outstanding big-game pitchers of his generation, is on the hill tonight for Boston. Andy Pettitte goes for New York. Should be interesting to see if Schilling plunks Alex Rodriguez after the Yankee third baseman's take-out elbow last night. Man, I sure hope the Yanks and Sox don't get into a brawl. That is the last thing this charged rivalry needs, especially with the possibility of Clemens returning to the big leagues next weekend in Boston.

But first things first: Let's Go Yan-Kees.

But according to ESPN's Peter Gammons, multiple sources are questioning whether the report is true.

Giambi has not been asked to take follow-up tests, which is what would occur if he had a first positive test for amphetamines.

Also, Gammons reports that the subject of amphetamines was not raised at Wednesday's meeting.

Don't like fights. Don't like games played when a warning has been issued. Takes the inside pitch out of the game. But Bosoz/Jank games bring out the best and the worst of players and fans.

Without A-Rod bashing, remember the Tech and him. Catcher called him out and beat him to the punch. Many said that the fight ignited the Sox. Then came the ball knocking, right before the elimination. Both very ugly incidents. Lowlights. I, too, don't want it to happen again.

first off...new to the board here, although i've had it bookmarked for some time now.

my first post is inspired by the current state of the yankees. i'm sick of talking about steroids, who's getting hit by pitches, who's getting paid what, etc etc... this whole team is a soap opera, but i am by no means giving up on them.

yeah, last nights loss was rough, especially falling behind right away, but we still have a chance to take the series. all i want at this point is for this team to start winning series. simple as that. i'm not even going to look at the standings for another month. but please yankees please! start winning series! i'm not asking for sweeps, although i wouldnt complain if they mixed in a few...just win some series.

i really do think they need to get to a few games over .500 by next month. then and only then can they start making a serious playoff push.

right now, the only concern should be playing good ball and winning series!

there. i said my piece. and i got paid for it. sweet!

maybe the offense won't be so stingy tonight and decide to finally give him some runs to work with.

See, it's talk like that that should cause AP to bean somebody early (since the Yanks have first opportunity) and get the warnings out and take the inside part of the plate away from Schilling. I know, I know, the Yanks are classier than that, but I don't think there is anybody who has watched them that would disagree that they need some more red ass. I have yet to see a more galvanizing event than a bench clearing.
2007-05-23 14:42:30
10.   NotGivingUp
if AP doesn't bean anyone, i'll settle for a nasty stare.

did anyone time manny around the bases last night?

12 I agree. I am not a Schilling fan, but I think he's smart enough not to risk getting his hand broken during a melee that he started with a payback pitch. The best payback is to win.

The Sox have way to much to lose participating in those kind of shenanigans. The Yanks on the other hand...

6 Dude, that's awesome! I'll look for someone sitting on BB if I'm ever back at MOMA...
2007-05-23 15:10:31
16.   NotGivingUp
i'm not advocating anyone getting plunked, but there is an absolute need to take back the inside half of the plate against the likes of ortiz and manny. it is an absolute necessity. both of them look like they are digging in for slow-pitch softball when they face us.

tavarez can instruct matsuzaka on national tv to pitch inside to a-rod and to tip his cap if he ends up hitting him... yet nobody on this staff can come up and in on their big guys.

there is a reason why the likes of drysdale, pedro, and clemens pitched inside...because it works.

14 Come on, this is Schilling we're talking about... He'll probably take the mound tonight wearing two bloody socks and a crusty old jock from the 2001 Serious. Don't forget that the man has a belly full of guts and with that belly, that's a whole lotta guts, my friend...
;-)

18.   jkay
I agree, must win tonight. I think the Podria thing will blow over. A-Rod gave him a shove, not enough for a rookie to call out A-Rod over. Welcome to the big leagues. If anyone should get plunked, it is Podria for shooting off his big mouth. The funny thing about that play is Posada was out at first and called safe.
2007-05-23 15:28:10
19.   NotGivingUp
yeah, posada was out at first. i dont even know why i even bothered getting excited. i somehow mistook this team for the late 90's yankees. they used to make teams pay for a blown call.

ahhh, the good old days.

Alex is being far too negative. The Yankees will start winning when they feel like it. This attitude of "wanting the the Yankees to stop losing" is chasing people away.
2007-05-23 16:04:23
26.   Simone
Desperately searching for something to write for the epitaph of Pavano's Yankee career, I turn to Steven Goldman who used VORP to determine that "Pavano has been a little worse than replacement level during his time in New York but, as we surmised, by virtue of not showing up he's actually been a better signing than were Ed Whitson and Andy Hawkins." See, it could have been worse.

Youkilis looks like the elephant man.

I know I said something earlier, but I think he's gotten uglier.

75 Thanks a lot Hocakes, I just spit up on my computer laughing.

Does anyone know how to get scotch out of a keyboard?

Andy's out pitch is the breaking ball tonight. Maybe always, come to think of it.

Dude, that 38 Bitches blog comment is too funny. I read the whole long sordid article in the Tampa Bay paper today. Reminds me of Toe Nash, another Tampa Bay prospect who turned out to be a bad guy.

84 A straw. If you don't have a straw, roll up a dollar bill, like one would for cocaine, er, or so I hear.

The Masked Man runs ridiculously. Even for a catcher.

Schill's numbers look like he's been getting hit pretty hard of late...

Let's have more like the first.

86 I remember reading, I think, Gammons on Toe Nash years ago.

Schilling manhandled Giambi there. Great strikeout pitch.

Gammons wrote about Toe Nash in 2001. Fawned over him. Was suckered.

Hey, Cano nice play. Now why didn't Kenny Lofton do that in Game 6 of the 2994 ALCS?

87 I burned my C-note lighting a cigar when Matsui hit the bomb. S'okay, I just tipped the laptop up and drank from the corners ;)

Many innings to go, but feeling good about tonight!

Wow, lookit the yankees running...they don't want to push the envelope with Cano's big ass though...he's got Keyshawn Johnson speed.

97 The modern lady likes a little something back there.

This is a team we can catch. They're not so different from the Yanks. The breaks have just gone their way. I'm no sabre guy (the math) but doesn't regression to the mean mean we're due to get better?
