Baseball Toaster Bronx Banter
Help
Four More Games Left

by Alex Belth

One of Cliff's favorites, D. Rasner is on the hill tonight for the Infamous Bronx Bomb Squad. The hapless Orioles are a team simply going through the motions at this point. Wonder if they can muster up the umph to play a competitive game tonight?

Oh, and off-the-topic, if anyone is interested in checking out some of my artwork--or music--check out my souped-up web site. Got some good tunes for the Hip Hop heads out there, as well as series of famous sports tirades (including ones from Goose Gossage, Lee Elia, Earl Weaver and Bobby Knight).

Good times are back in Colorado
Seventh inning stretch, Dodgers lead 17-11, 13 pitchers thus far, 306 pitches thrown.

Anyone know what the deal is with the Card's schedule? They seem to have a game that might well need to made up. I guess they'd play Monday if needed, but against whom?

Cool tirades, Alex. I only got to the Goose one so far. Just imagine if A-Rod went off like that.

Joe Mauer dropped below Derek Jeter and into second place in the American League batting race on Sept. 15. Mauer has hit .429 (15-for-35) since then to regain the lead. Jeter has hit .277 (13-for-47) over the same span.

7 That is interesting. Good closer...check. Power pitching staff and good defense...oy.

I love Wang. I enjoy his starts the most of any Yankee pitcher. I still have fond memories of that game where he had nine (9!) assists.

But I do think his getting the #1 spot is as much about how Moose and the Unit have struggled as about how good Tiger is. Which isn't good.

7 Wonderful, thanks! First person I've seen to nail what Wang is rather than overhyping how he's either unique or fleeting.

I don't think Wang is a season #1 starter, but with the quick turnaround in the postseason, he's probably best able to come back on short rest.

23 Rasner's not making the post-season roster. Peter Abraham posted a projected roster today, and I think he's right:

Starting pitchers
Mike Mussina
Randy Johnson
Chien-Ming Wang

Starters or long relievers
Cory Lidle
Jaret Wright

Relievers
Brian Bruney
Kyle Farnsworth
Mike Myers
Scott Proctor
Mariano Rivera
Ron Villone

Starting lineup
Johnny Damon
Derek Jeter
Bobby Abreu
Alex Rodriguez
Jason Giambi
Gary Sheffield
Hideki Matsui
Jorge Posada
Robinson Cano

Bench
Melky Cabrera OF
Sal Fasano C
Bernie Williams OF
Miguel Cairo IF
Andy Phillips IF

The only one that's even the slightest bit questionable is Andy Phillips, IMO. There's a chance Joe might go with Wilson or Guiel instead. But probably not. He clearly thinks Andy is the best defender at 1B, so will probably go with him.

2006-09-28 17:13:41
27.   singledd
If Andy IS on the PS roster, I don't know why Joe has kept him on the bench for 2 months.
Hell, I didn't know he was still on the team.
2006-09-28 17:16:02
28.   markp
I think it's just as likely Wilson makes the 25 man, and there's always the chance he brings two middle IF and uses Cairo as the late inning guy at 1B (where he's really overrated.)
2006-09-28 17:22:45
29.   randym77
I'd like to see Guiel get the 25th spot. We don't need another outfielder, but I like the way he plays 1B.
2006-09-28 17:24:12
30.   monkeypants
25 If that's the PS roster, that's not good. Fasano, Cairo, Andy, and LH Bernie are nearly worthless, so you are carrying nearly an entire bench that can't hit. Yeah sure, the starters are great, but lack of bench has hurt this team the last couple of years.

On the pitching side, do you really need two #4/#5/long relief pitchers? If you're forced to use Wright and Lidle, then you are in a world of hurt anyway.

2006-09-28 17:35:21
31.   randym77
You know Fasano, Cairo, and Bernie are going to be on the postseason roster come hell or high water. You need a backup catcher, and Fasano is it. I don't have a problem with Cairo. His defense is solid, he plays all infield positions (and even the outfield in a pinch), and this year, he's been a very clutch hitter. Bernie...he's very limited. But he's Bernie. I can't imagine leaving him out.

I don't think we need big bats on the bench. What I want is versatility. Guys who can pinch-run and play good defense at more than one position. Miggy meets that criteria, and I guess Melky does, too. I wish Andy had more going for him that his supposed good glove. He's a terrible baserunner and not that hot at the plate. But then, Wilson and Guiel aren't exactly speedy, either.

Pitching is worrisome. I think we may have to use Wright or Lidle, unfortunately.

2006-09-28 17:39:05
32.   its430
Boy, Cabrera sure is pitching a nice NO HITTER right now, wouldn't you say?

couple days before the season ends, and he's got a NO HITTER going.

Wow. A NO HITTER. Michael Kay must be thrilled.

2006-09-28 17:44:51
33.   monkeypants
31 Oh you're right--those guys will be on the roster. But that doesn't make it right. They shouldn't bring Fasano, but should use Wilson as the emergency C instead. Look at the stats for the last ten years, and add up all the back-up C ABs for the Yankees in the playoffs. If Fasano gets in, it's because Jorge is dead, and the team will have bigger problems that who straps on the back-up pads.

Likewise a back-up IF. Under what circumstances with Cairo actually play? PR for Giambi is possible, but he won't play in the field unless A-Rod, Jeter, or Cano is hurt.

If you want flexibility, then you should bring Wilson (1B, OF, C) or Gueil (1B, OF). I prefer Gueil because he makes a nice platoon with Bernie (not that it would matter to Torre) and he can play a little CF.

Of course, if it were me I'd be tempted to bring only 10 pitchers, at least for the ALDS, and carry 15 position players. Of those 15, Andy would not be one.

2006-09-28 17:48:04
34.   randym77

I figure one of our jinx has to work.

2006-09-28 17:56:24
38.   randym77
Well, I would pick Wilson or Guiel over Andy Phillips. I'm just not sure Joe will.

Cairo...he's supposedly the best baserunner on the team, so may get in the game as a pinch-runner. Joe's been known to use pinch-runners not just for Giambi, but for Bernie, Matsui and Jorgie.

I wish we had more speed. We've got a ton of bench players right now, and most of them are terrible baserunners. Kevin Thompson is probably the fastest guy on the team, but we don't need another OFer. Plus there's rumors of attitude problems with him, so I'd be very surprised if he made the post-season roster.

I don't know about you guys, but I think this is a serious comeuppance for this team, even with some scrubs playing. All this "world's greatest lineup" talk is blowing too much hot air around the club, and setting mad crazy expectations.

To not even make this guy break a sweat (granted, a very good pitcher, but still), might make them realize that they can't just show up and expect any club, even the O's, to roll over. If this no-hitter actually lasts another couple of innings, it will be serious egg on the face of the club.

Meanwhile, Minnesota is losing to KC again - why, exactly, are we scared of the Yanks facing the Twins? - the Cards are getting destroyed and the Reds are about to win.

I know in '64 that the Phillies blew the lead, but they still ended up in second place, right? If things go exactly the wrong way the next 4 days, the Cards might be finish in third. Greatest choke ever? I'd say so!

Honestly, I don't see why its such a big deal. Its not like the Mets lost without Pedro, and its not like he pitched all that well when he did pitch. Sure, he's an experienced vet and all that, but he hasn't been PEDRO in about 3 years, maybe longer. The Mets will be fine without him.

you know what's gonna bug me about the no-no if it happens? the fact that ESPN is going to be all: "The talk about the dominant offense aside, the Yankees were no hit tonight. For all everyone said at the beginning of the year about 100 runs, the offense was absent in the Bronx tonight." they're going to act like it was someone else who made all of those claims, like it was Derek Jeter who's been touting the offense, when in fact it was ESPN and teh rest of teh media who will now gloat over the no hitter like they thought the Yanks sucked all along. sickens me.

that said, cano ends it in the 9th on a screaming double down the right field line.

Don't the official scorers usually want a no hitter to be broken up on a clean hit (to eliminate controversy, I guess)?
