Sorry I wasn't around yesterday to recap the Sunday night game. Call it a rare day of rest for Cliff and me. But other than Gary Winfield's line drive dinger in the first, there wasn't much to get excited about for Yankee fans, as a three-headed Red Sox monster (Edgar-Cookie-Manny) helped sink Mike Mussina. Boomer Wells, sporting some silly-looking facial hair, had a rocky first inning and then settled down and pitched a fine game. Rodrigo Lopez did much better against Boston last night, as the Sox, Yanks trail the Orioles by four games in the AL East (the Jays are four-and-a-half behind). The Bombers start the first of four series on the road in Kansas City tonight.

The top of the O's order is a hitting machine. If Sosa gets hot, they may keep 1st place.

Yeah, and if Lopez and company keep pitching like they have, they'll contend.

The O's can flat-out rake.

I mentioned in the last thread that I thought the Sox currently have a better team than the Yanks. While that's true, does anybody else get the feeling that the Yanks tense up whenever the two teams play, as though they somehow (even now) have more at stake than Boston?

Brockdc, yeah, it's hard not to get the feeling that the Yanks are now cowed by Boston. I have to admit, I'm not the least bit surprised that Mussina failed to take the series, as good as he's been. After all these years, Boston's now a serious team to be reckoned with and the Yanks aren't really reckoning.

I think silly-looking facial hair is a requirement on the Sox (see Millar, Kevin and Nixon, Trot).

Clement's hair is the most ridiculous. But hey, there is no accounting for taste, right?
