That Sinking Feeling
2008-05-31 15:29
by Alex Belth

Dear Chien-Ming,

I have really enjoyed watching you pitch over the past few years. I know that you have run into a little bit of trouble recently and I just wanted to let you know that we're still behind you and that we'll be rooting for you tonight. Who cares that ground balls tend to zip through the infield out there in Minnie. Do your thing, Strech.

Sending all my best,

Alex

p.s. Let's Go Yan-Kees!

Man, all this humidity, threat of hail and thunderstorms in the NY area has frightened the bejesus out of me and forced me to bring out my bong.

Bong hits for Wang!!!! Bong hits for Wang!!!!

Let's go Yanks!!!

My theory is that approximately 63% of Boof Bonser's skill stems from hitters laughing too hard at his stupid, stupid nickname.

I wonder if Wang is having a fingernail issue or something. His command in May has not been what it was in April, or normally is.

Wang is leaving everything up. This could end badly.

7 The pop-out from Gomez came on a slider. I don't know what the RBI single pitch was, Gameday called it a changeup at 86 mph. Everything else was fastball, and were high-thigh and up.

Just spent the past hour on the back porch enjoying some nice warm weather for a change. Mudhen announcers are still going on about Ben Broussard -- Yankees signed him a day before the Hens' Jeff Larish got called up, leaving the Hens short a firstbaseman.

Is Ben that good?

62 Yeah... early 80's teams I think. The were a bunch of games in (1980?) when our opponants ran circles around us. King George was so pissed he decided to re-build the Yankees on speed. An idiotic idea, but that's how knee-jerk reactional George was.

They've got a lot of wood to chop between now and September and a LOT of games with the Yanks and Sawx (not to mention the Jays) ahead of them. IN fact, they're about to hit a road trip at Boston, at Texas and at the Angels. Let's see how they look then.

150 minors, spring training, BP etc. If Damon knew how to bunt we'd have a runner at second instead of 2 outs. This games is starting to feel like a loss...not quite, but starting to. Aren't the boys tired of being a sub .500 team?

307 Not a fan of Reed Johnson either. He cannot possibly think that looks good.

I think that Sparky Hawkins should come in anyway to give him some confidence. Plus there's a young kid wearing Mickey Rivers's number who'd make a fine defensive replacement at first base.

Thanks all. I picture 4 guys being used to carry one. But I think Britton can handle it. Mo's pretty lithe.

the benefit to this game is we've gotten to see all their relievers. The twins announcers said they've played several extra inning games recently. We've still got our secret weapon Butterbean Britton for tomorrow.

333 he's got to be better than #17. Sorry, I know that he's God and he should be batting .800 with adjusted BABIP and I won't criticize him ever again, but Wilson for all his faults plays better defense.

Did Abreu just say "shit"? That was a fun little moment.

For those of you without YES. Cano came up behind Abreu who was being interviewed live by Kim Jones and doused him with cold water. Abreu was caught by surprised.

338 I honestly believe that Jason Giambi is the best defensive first baseman on the 25 man roster.

Basically by default.

2008-05-31 20:51:07
344.   Eirias
And look who is in 4th in the AL. The ascent begins.
2008-05-31 20:51:14
345.   Jeb
I know Joe made some questionable decisions tonight but I like how the bullpen held together. We really have a great chance to win 3 of 4 and if we really focus and take these games 1 at a time we could sweep.
2008-05-31 20:52:15
346.   JimCobain
343 I agree.

The point I was making was maybe there should be someone on the bench that is better at fielding the first base positon than Duncan or Betemit.

2008-05-31 20:52:49
347.   Jeb
343 Seriously, you might be right about that. But I think that if Betemit isn't #1 he's at least #2 and the other fella is the worst.

348.   Mattpat11
Oh fuck.

UPDATE, 8:44 p.m.: It appears Jeff Karstens is headed to the majors. He was lifted after four innings in his start for Scranton tonight (4 6 2 2 2 2).

346 no question. they should have re-upped Stinky Minky (by the way that's a harsh nickname I didn't invent!)

348 Don't worry, read on:

UPDATE, 10:38 p.m.: Not so fast on Jeff Karstens. Chad Jennings reports that Karstens left the game tonight because he felt tightness in the groin muscle that he popped in spring training.
So the long man on Tuesday will be … Dan Giese? Not the K-Man. No, it's can't be.

Well ok if it's Igawa we need to worry.

358 AGREED! But let's win 14-0 okay? I want Arod to homer three times and Jeter twice if that's okay with you guys.

359 who are you referring to? Giese?

362.   rsmith51
349 Mr. 65 OPS+ He would have been playing way too much if he was on the team, hurting their already anemic offense.

Giambi has an OPS+ of 155.

2008-05-31 21:04:57
363.   Jeb
362 UM Minky had a 107 OPS+ last year. It's not great but it's acceptable with his defense.
2008-05-31 21:06:44
364.   Jeb
362 and we currently have a backup first baseman who can't play defense and has a 39 OPS+ (Of course, I realize we can't count any of his at bats -- except for his 9 hits -- because of BABIP, but damn that really sucks).

365 gotcha and that is pretty good. I hope he gets Cy Young consideration this year. If Willie Fucking Hernandez who went 33 for 33 in saves won the MVP over Mattingly in 1984, then Mo should get CY consideration at least.
